    1937 Zephyr

The Lincoln Zephyr was named after the Greek god of the West Wind. Ford’s aerodynamic design for 1937 competed directly with the Chrysler Airflow and the Pierce Arrow. The art deco style grill and integrated front fenders combined with the teardrop shaped front lights, gave it an upscale elegant look that bespoke the Lincoln line of cars. It had a small V-12 engine with 110 HP, 4.4 Liter with a top speed of 90 mph. Its production run was from 1936 through 19 42 with over 15,000 cards produced in the first year. All production ended with the beginning of WWII and Ford discontinued using the Zephyr name after WWII. The car came in Coup, Cabriolet and 4 door models. Plaque is 1/8” BBPW with ¼” backer. Finish is shellac with gloss lacquer.

    The Wood Database

I ran across this site "The Wood Database" https://www.wood-database.com/. It seems to have interesting information about different types of wood and I thought it might be of interest to our membership. I had been reading the post by FrankEV entitled "Wall Art - No Backer, No Frame" and saw mention of Sapele, a variety of wood I had not heard of before. The Wood Database has an informative write-up on Sapele.

    Pallet wood

Just looking at a pallet out back deciding whether to harvest the wood and found this interesting knot. Would have loved to see that branch. Nail head indicates sizing.

I thought a picture of an imperfect flower on a rough cut pallet board with cracks and nail holes would help convey this awesome quote from Fred Rogers. Make sure your kids and grandkids know you do.

Well, they laughed at Einstein too! I love my Hegners and would not give them up. There is, however, a major problem for me. The lower blade clamp. I hate it. It is the only fault I can find on the saws. I had a leftover, homemade Hawk blade clamp so I gave it a try. It works and is so much simpler to load. I will make it shorter with a revised knob and a smaller orifice for the blade. Even without changes it works perfectly. My system for loading is a bit wild but I'll come up with a slotted fixture to hold the clamp for loading. For now the small vise works well. when the blade is tensioned the blade automatically centers itself. Threading the little Hegner holder is over. This quick and easy. It can be done blindfolded.

I have an EX-21 and it's all I need. So since we're dealing in hypotheticals, if money were no problem, I would likely find a lot of other stuff to spend it on.

This is a loaded question as I am sure there will be a different answer from every person. Me personally, I am still in love with my Dewalt 788 Type 1, but that is me.

    Fred Rogers quote

Frankly, I would be thrilled to be the recipient of this piece. As much as we all think we’re “perfect”, realistically we must know we have faults. There are some that try to change others to mold them to their “perfect” image. I’m very lucky because I know my husband “ loves me just the way I am”. The fact that it’s wonderfully scrolled on an imperfect board with an imperfect flower -which we can all relate to being, the message is very powerful and should not be taken out of context. Thank you Charlie, I will be making this one as well.

Rocky, thanks for the info. Will give me something to do in between the 1000 other tasks I have. It’s the life of a home owner I guess! Again, thank you much. I can see having several of these with blades loaded and ready to go being a great help

  20. I cut it all the way around on my table saw. I set the blade so it doesn't quite go all the way through. Then I take a utility blade and cut through the remainder all the way around. It takes very little effort with a ROS to smooth it up.

The clamp is 1" long. O originally made it for my 220 Hawk. To make another I would make 3/4" long and 1/2" diameter. The through hole is 1/4-28. I had o find an extended tap to thread the entire piece. That's one reason to make it 3/4". Extended taps are expensive but I found a used one on ebay. The little side hole should be big enough to accept the largest blade you will use. Doing it again I would use a metric tap and order the Hegner knob. That goes in one end and a flat point set screw goes into the other side. Saves making or finding a knob. Also I removed the stupid bolt for tightening the tilting table. Just in the way. I just replaced it with a hex head bolt.

No matter what dill bit I use (#68 and up) I use a dremel carving bit, that looks like a ball at the end of a shaft, to debur the hole and create a funnel shaped dimple on the back side at each hole. Makes threading a 2/0 blade, or even larger blades, from below much easier. I think this might be easier than the Awl trick.

Like Rocky time, I was 7 when my family came to the US from Germany. My father was the best toolmaker I have ever met and taught me a lot. Both of us were constantly evaluating and improving stuff. Still do. There are a couple of things I would change on the Hegner.

  37. I've loved that box cense the first time you put it on here. The inlay is just awesome! So you use a table saw and not a band saw? I think Jim Finn told me one time he cuts it open with a band saw. I'm going to have to try that...on scrap first

    1937 Zephyr

I like it and, before I even saw you words about the Chrysler Airflow, I was reminded of my Dad's 1936 Chrysler that was still running well when it was sold in 1960. Sometimes I wonder if it is still running and I like to think that it is.

  43. That turned out really nice. I use my laser mostly for embellishments/engraving on my woodworking projects. I also use it to mark my name/date on projects. Anyway, engraving messages is a great upsell that doesn't take long once you have things dialed in.

  44. Find yourself a lab jack on Amazon. Handy little giz that can support quite a bit of weight and relatively low cost. You could set it on the floor of your laser and raise/lower the project to the focal point. They are like a scissor jack.

    Jewelry Box Help Needed

When my students are using small hinges I have them hot glue them in place to mark where the pilot holes will go. We also sometimes use it to hole the hinge in place while putting in the little screws, one less thing to try and hold/line-up.

    Baltic Birch Plywood

That was going to be my suggestion too. I buy mine from Cherokee Wood Products mostly because of the fact that they cater to scrollers, Chris who runs the online is top-notch and it's less than an hour from me. I try to get a list of what I'm going to be needing and then email my order to Chris. Once he has it cut/milled to what I need, he emails me and I go pick it up. Their pricing is great too. Shipping cost is the killer though.
