    Wall Art Aquarium

In a thread under Q&A I previously asked the question about how "Wall Art" is normally displayed, as there are no suggestions for backers or frames. Based on some of the answers I received this is what I did. My lady, Robin, specifically found these six Underwater Sea Creature patterns from the Scroller Website and she asked me to cut them for her. They are cut from 1/4"BB Ply and left unstained. I mostly used Pegas #0 spiral blades to cut the patterns. As they are "Wall Art", I decided I would need to create my own "wall", as I did not think they would look good hanging by themselves on our nearly white walls. The backer is 12" x 48" long piece of 1/4" Luan plywood painted with 3 coats of custom colored wall paint. The base color was Valspar Blue Turquoise that I streaked the wet third coat with Valspar Turquoise Tint to add some light colored high lights. I purchased sample jars of the paint from the Lowes paint department. After mounting the cuts to the backer I finished the panel with multiple coats of spray Lacquer. I made the custom size frame from cut down pre-primed brick mold, also from Lowes, which I then finished painted with rattle can spray high gloss white enamel. I think this project came out fairly well and we now have our own Wall Art Aquarium and Robin is happy...that is all that matters!

  3. I cut this President Trump portrait last week and made a frame for it. I've already got one sold and another interested person. H. Botas did the pattern, I cut it in 1/4" Baltic Birch ply with #3 & #1 Pegas blades and finished with spray Lacquer. Then mounted it in a frame I made from 1 x 2 White Pine painted black with a black mat board backer. Get out and vote! We did today and beat the lines

  5. Same here. The Dust Deputy works great. Although, a downdraft table may be a worthy addition, even with the ROS hooked to a shop vac. It could help with dust from hand sanding or from sanders that don't have a shop vac connection.

  6. Not tried the vac table-box idea. Instead, I invested in a Mirka sander. Age and bad habits have changed my life in the last two years dramatically when it comes to my shop activities. Masking up is now second nature except when sanding with the Mirka system. The initial investment hurt, but the results are exactly what they advertise and more. Easy to move around if you want to. You don’t have to use their vac. Any good quality vac will work. I’m pretty new but thought I would chime in on what works for me. Great forum by the way, always informative and interesting. Pretty new to scrolling, learning as I go and having fun doing so. Thanks to all.

Just looking at a pallet out back deciding whether to harvest the wood and found this interesting knot. Would have loved to see that branch. Nail head indicates sizing.

  12. I made one about 5 years ago. It's pretty large, something like 24" x 36". It works okay, but not great. Some help is better than none. My ROS is a Porter Cable. Here's a couple of pics. Mine folds against a wall when not in use. Note the black strips running through the top. This is the material from a track saw base. It keeps smaller pieces from moving around so much while the sander spins. There was an interesting YouTube video I saw recently Stumpy Numbs Drool Tools There's a sander near the end that looks pretty good, but $$$$

  13. I just replaced the sanding pads on my ROS and found quite a bit of fine dust caked in around the dust ports. This was the first time I replaced pads and the sanders are about 8-10 years old.

  14. Go with the smallest active surface for your work, like 12" square, with additional inactive surface for piece support. On my lathe a 10" square hood hooked to a 4" dust collector hose works OK at about a 3" standoff. A Shopfox downdraft table about 12"X20" was OK with a 2" hose to a shop vac using a DeWalt RO sander with collection bag if I stayed over the inlet. Then I found that Festool had an adapter from a 2" hose that fit snuggly over the outlet nozzle on the DeWalt. As an experiment, hook you hose up to something the size you are contemplating and see if it will pick up sawdust from the floor. Good luck on your search.

  15. I do not use a downdraft table because I keep my ROS connected to a dedicated vac with a DustDeputy. It collects ALL the dust when sanding. With the Dust Deputy hooked up, I only have to clean the vac filter once a year, weather it needs it or not! And there is no airborne dust!

    Pallet wood

This is the most unique piece of wood that I have ever seen. I'd love to have been the person who found it. I'd have made something frameable out of it. Or resawn it to have more than one piece.

    Scroll Saw

Well, if money was no object, the first thing I'd do is buy a house with a real shop. Then I'd load it up with all the best woodworking tools. Once all that was done, I'd buy one each of all the best scroll saws just to have them . I'd like to have another Hegner. I liked the one I had with the exception of the motor/soft start issue. I love my EX21. I haven't had the EX16 long enough to really try it out but so far so good. I'm sort of glad the money is an issue though. I think if it was too easy to buy stuff, I'd never appreciate having anything. This way, I cherish everything I have.

    Hegner Mod

I'd buy another new Hawk again.. Typically my go to blade is a Pegas MG #3.. Mostly cut 5/8" material whether it's stack cutting several thin pieces of ply or hardwood.. My go to used to be the #5 but I find the #3 actually cuts faster and leaves a smoother edge.. Those PGT blades are nice blades too.. What I dislike about them is the smallest size they make is a #5 and they are kind of a big #5 compared to other brands and styles.. They are also kind on the pricey side.. Great blades though and last a long time.. Just not ideal blades for my type of projects..

    Sqigglies

I don't know what else to call it. Look at the picture. When I drill a hole I get these annoying little squigglies around the hole. They make it difficult to see the pattern line. Of course I can brush them off or push them out of the way. Does anyone else have this problem? I know what causes it, I just wonder if this happens with other types of tape. I am using Scotch Shipping Tape under my patterns. The spray adhesive sticks well to it, it does not pull up when I am sawing, and it does not leave a residue when I remove it from the project. But it does result in the squigglies. I ran out of blue painters tape. I bought a roll of clear shelf film from Walmart as recommended by others but it leaves a sticky residue when i remove it from the project. I am ready to do something different. What do you use and how does it work?

  20. I suspect there is a clog somewhere in your sander. I used to have a Porter Cable 33 that worked great with the vac system, however that unit died after 15 years of great service. I currently have a Makita B5042 which has a pistol grip and variable speed. It works just a good as the old Porter Cable with the shop vac and Dust Deputy. All my other sanders are either hooked up to my dust collector or I hook them up to the shop vac and DD.

  21. Does that mean that your all done with my stuff. I can't believe you painted Zoie for me. Looks great. She will be so excited to get that one.

  22. I use a DeWalt ROS and don't notice any great amount of dust. I do use my air gun and blow it out from top to bottom about every 2-3 sandpaper changes. Also I empty, and blow clean, the bag fairly often.

    President Trump

We voted yesterday. Mid-afternoon at county courthouse in a small town...only ones there. A older couple (estimate 80s +) came in as we were finishing. Much better than standing in a longline in the cold!!

  24. Lots of nice work. Just wondering, don't you sleep? All those would take me weeks to complete as my shop time is only about max 3 hours a day. Project glue up time and finishing accounts for a lot of that time. I may start a second project while paint dries, but my normal routine is to cut, glue, finish and when needed build a frame. Kevin, your monica say it all!

    Laminated MDF

Why settle for MDF? I would never use MDF. I always use hardwoods. Maple, Cherry, Walnut, Mahogany, oak and Sapele. Alder, Yellowheart, Purpleheart, and Redheart. Wow! So many beautiful hardwoods and you want to use MDF! Go to Ochooch hardwoods. They have the thickness and widths you need. Probably priced competitively to MDF. Hardwoods have grain and texture. MDF has no grain. MDF stand for medium density fiberboard. That’s not wood. It’s a wood byproduct full of nasty chemicals.

  30. Considering that I have a very small shop and try to do most of my sanding outdoors, what size do you recommend for a box? I was thinking maybe 20 x 20 similar to a box fan. What size is yours?
    1 point
  31. I use and I made 2. They are both small and I place them on a workbench when I flat sand I made mine out of peg board and drilled out some of the middle holes to make them a little larger I use a 2" pvc pipe to connect to my shop vac. When I want to use it, I hook up the shop vac with a clamp, and sand away. I can use my orbital, hand sander, or home made sanding pads It works quite well.

    Fretsaw

Used one many years ago when all I had was a bandsaw and a coping saw would not reach in to do the cut out. A t one time got an electric one. Jumped around far too much to cut a smooth line even with the work clamped down.

My guess is a dull drill bit, that is usually the cause for tear out on my projects. What size drill bit are you using? Since it is plenty big for the blade. Making a smaller hole (even with tear out) will not obscure your pattern lines as much.

If your concerned about blade lubrication. Put the clear packing tape on top of the pattern your cutting. I do this on thicker cuts with no issues. You can even do this after you drill the holes, the blade will just push through the tape.

Gorilla Grip. I think this is the product. https://www.amazon.com/Gorilla-Grip-Original-Removable-Coverings/dp/B0848PXDBF/ref=sr_1_4_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=gorilla+grip+shelf+liner&qid=1603664053&sr=8-4-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFVUldYRFRMUkExVlMmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTEwNDY1MDIxMzZJWDlXNEFBTkkyJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA0NTM2NzEzSTI5T1BLRzA2UjJIJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ== I will check on my drill speed and will check my drill bits for sharpness. I use a Wen 4208 drill press. I can change drill speed but it is a bit of a bother to do so. Right now it is at the speed set at the factory, whatever that is. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HQONFVE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    Sqigglies

Your problem is one or both of two things. Your drill bit is dull or the speed of the drill is incorrect. I always use a drill press to drill my holes. Drill bits are designed to operate at an optimum speed. You can find a speed chart at woodmagazine.com
