In a thread under Q&A I previously asked the question about how "Wall Art" is normally displayed, as there are no suggestions for backers or frames. Based on some of the answers I received this is what I did. My lady, Robin, specifically found these six Underwater Sea Creature patterns from the Scroller Website and she asked me to cut them for her. They are cut from 1/4"BB Ply and left unstained. I mostly used Pegas #0 spiral blades to cut the patterns. As they are "Wall Art", I decided I would need to create my own "wall", as I did not think they would look good hanging by themselves on our nearly white walls. The backer is 12" x 48" long piece of 1/4" Luan plywood painted with 3 coats of custom colored wall paint. The base color was Valspar Blue Turquoise that I streaked the wet third coat with Valspar Turquoise Tint to add some light colored high lights. I purchased sample jars of the paint from the Lowes paint department. After mounting the cuts to the backer I finished the panel with multiple coats of spray Lacquer. I made the custom size frame from cut down pre-primed brick mold, also from Lowes, which I then finished painted with rattle can spray high gloss white enamel. I think this project came out fairly well and we now have our own Wall Art Aquarium and Robin is happy...that is all that matters!9 points

I got pushed into this
GPscroller and 2 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Some of you saw the photo of my great granddaughter that I put into the 'pattern request' forum. I had three people respond and made some great patterns. I made a copy and took them to my wife for her opinion on which one to cut. She responded, "You have been wanting to learn how to make portrait patterns for more than 4 years. I think the patterns that you have made so far have been pretty good. If you do not take the initiative to give it a try you are never going to understand how to do it. I say, make it this time to start trying to do it. It doesn't have to be perfect, heck look at how far you have come with your scrolling. If you would not have continued to cut things, you would be no better today then when you first gave all this a shot." I explained to her that I agreed but I was totally unsure about the hair in the photo. I had three good examples at how to do her hair, so I decided to go ahead and give it a try. It is not perfect, by a long shot, but with the examples I was given in the patterns, I went ahead and made a pattern on my own. This is the results...... Thank you all for taking the time to make me a pattern, and believe me, I really appreciate them all. They did help me to understand better how to go about accomplishing my goal here. I understand I have a long way to go before I get this to where I want it, but my wife was correct and effort is going to be my best teacher. I know I will loose a few but in the end, I hope to be able to accomplish what I am after, for the most part, down the line. This will be one to look back on for a comparison as I continue to try and make wood portraits. Dick heppnerguy3 points -

Down Draft Sanding Table??
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
The downdraft works more on gravity not so much on suction. This is the one I built: https://fixthisbuildthat.com/diy-downdraft-sanding-table-box/ if you look toward the middle, you'll the "dust chute" which is the key to the table. There is just enough suction to pull down the small particles of dust which fall onto the chute and into the dust control2 points -
Probably my problem is it may be plugged up... I've never had a issue with my old Bosch RO sander.. I almost when with the DeWalt when getting a new one.. but since they still made the exact same one I had and I used it a lot... held up well for what I throw at it from a commercial type use.. I ended up buying another just like it. Maybe I was lucky with the first one or this one is just a fluke.. Works good still.. just started spewing dust a couple weeks ago though.. I hate the fine sanding dust and the old one did real well with collecting the dust in the canister..2 points

Neat set up... I've thought on and off for a few years now about building one of these.. I like how it folds up out of the way..2 points

Thanks for the welcome. Cost of the Mirka is high. The desire to continue woodworking was high. In order to continue , I wanted the best long term solution and the Mirka ticked all the appropriate boxes for my condition. Turns out, the cost compared to my health doesn’t even factor into the end results. No regrets. My scrolling is pretty basic. Silouettes, trivets and the likes. Not full time yet. Still doing so many other things. I’m always looking at the pics of what you regulars are doing and I am in aw of the time effort and dedication. I have a lot to learn and in doing so, I would not post a pic unless I thought it was worthy. But “hey” thanks for the encouragement. Gary2 points

I know exactly what you mean. The challenge is to see how much you can do with how little. I actually own one of those, the Dowelmax. Over the years I've made quite a few mortise and tenon joints, using the Dowelmax it's a lot easier to joint a couple pieces of stock, without screws or nails.2 points

Down Draft Sanding Table??
John B and one other reacted to OzarkSawdust for a topic
I use a DeWalt ROS and don't notice any great amount of dust. I do use my air gun and blow it out from top to bottom about every 2-3 sandpaper changes. Also I empty, and blow clean, the bag fairly often.2 points -
Down Draft Sanding Table??

Not tried the vac table-box idea. Instead, I invested in a Mirka sander. Age and bad habits have changed my life in the last two years dramatically when it comes to my shop activities. Masking up is now second nature except when sanding with the Mirka system. The initial investment hurt, but the results are exactly what they advertise and more. Easy to move around if you want to. You don’t have to use their vac. Any good quality vac will work. I’m pretty new but thought I would chime in on what works for me. Great forum by the way, always informative and interesting. Pretty new to scrolling, learning as I go and having fun doing so. Thanks to all.2 points -
I have a router, 6” jointer and the down draft box on the table. I picked up the empty table at a auction for $10.00 lol. No one knew what it was I guess. No I wouldn’t spend $375 on one. It is nice to have in a small shop. Maybe worth $100 to me.1 point

I do the same thing. But since I have Prime on Amazon, I do make most of my purchasing there, especially if I'm in a hurry. I can have items delivered next day most all the time. I have found items cheaper on eBay , but I have to wait, sometime weeks.1 point

That's good to know.. I usually shop around by model number to see who has the best deal.. I typically find things cheaper yet on ebay.. but I haven't searched yet.. as i was just posting here to see if they are worth having.. Thanks for the heads up on being cheaper on amazon though..1 point

Why thank you FrankEV!!!! My problem is i tend to cut with too big a blade ,to cut fast and get it over with and then sand and spray if i have to .I would be happiest just cutting. I have fallen asleep many time in the past at the saw with it running , no accidents yet but the water lines for cooling the Dewalt get to be a pain cutting big things!!lol1 point -
Ray removing to entire boss Just makes for a cleaner look. I didn't remove mine to top feed just to make it easier to bottom feed especially on larger fretwork1 point

For years I used a Bosch RO $5 at a yard sale. It did the job but dust collection on it not so much. A few years ago Festool had a RO on sale for $99 I put it on my Christmas wish list. Well as was expected that $99 was sold out and never repeated. But under the tree that year was a Festool ETS EC 125-3. A couple of days later I ordered a Festool Midi vac. There is no sanding dust, no vibration. When I am not using the sander I have the vacuum connected to my SS. It comes on with the saw. I had also won a Festool track saw in our clubs door prize raffle $10. I did build a little side draft box that I connect to my DC system for when I use a power carver.1 point

I like the way that you did this. I've been asked to create a wide but narrow stained glass piece to go into the high-up window in a friend's bathroom and I am thinking that what you did here, only with a turquoise glass backing, might be more appealing than the traditional stained glass that I was planning to make. If I decide to proceed with this, where can I obtain that patterns that you used?1 point -

I am also thinking that too.. I think tomorrow I'll take and blow it out good with the air hose and see if it helps.. Maybe even take it apart and see if I can break it worst.. then maybe a better excuse for a festool sander and vac,1 point

I have 3 different vacuums and dust deputies.. mostly just hooked to scroll saws for collection at them.. Then have a HF dust collection system for the CNC/ Bandsaw/ and Planner.. It all has helped a ton.. Never had much dust from my Bosch RO sanders until just recently so I took the vac off one of the scroll saws and hooked it to my RO sander.. was still blowing some dust through the side of the sander instead of sucking up into the vac.. Thinking maybe I have a plugged up area inside the sander so the air flow is backing up and out the one side vent.. Gong to try blowing it out with the air hose tomorrow and see what that does.1 point

I've found a lot of caked up dust as well in my old sander when I'd take it apart to replace the motor brushes.. Done that twice and the last time the motor arbor had some pretty good grooves in it.. I tried to clean it up good but the power was never the same after replacing them the last time so I bought a refurbished one just like it.. has worked well up until this bad dust leaking out the side of it that has gotten pretty bad the last couple weeks. Maybe I just need to blow it all out with the air hose..1 point

Welcome to the village, I'm glad you chimed in... I'll have to look at the Mirka sander.. never heard of that brand before.. As for masking up... I do not enter the shop without a mask.. wear one the entire time I'm in the shop even if I'm not really doing anything to create a dust cloud.. Just second nature to me...1 point
-
I kind of figured those downdraft tables probably loose suction outside of the area where the hose is attached.. It'd be pretty tricky to get a solid even suction throughout the entire area.. Thanks for the thoughts and the experiment idea.. I've kinda figured that'd be how it would work out..1 point

Considering that I have a very small shop and try to do most of my sanding outdoors, what size do you recommend for a box? I was thinking maybe 20 x 20 similar to a box fan. What size is yours?1 point -

danny reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
I use and I made 2. They are both small and I place them on a workbench when I flat sand I made mine out of peg board and drilled out some of the middle holes to make them a little larger I use a 2" pvc pipe to connect to my shop vac. When I want to use it, I hook up the shop vac with a clamp, and sand away. I can use my orbital, hand sander, or home made sanding pads It works quite well.1 point -
