Ornament Exchange #2
frankorona and 8 others reacted to wombatie for a topic
With Dan's permission I can show you the ornaments that he sent to me. They are beautiful and they are perfect. They are cut from all the same type of would, even though it doesn't look like it. They will hang with all the other wooden ornament that he has sent over the last few years. At this rate I will need a bigger tree. Marg9 points -

Attached are pics of my recent dust collection scheme. I used Rockler's Dust Right connections plus a Shop Vac straight tube section and floor attachment under the table. I hook everything up to a mobile Seyco dust collector. No more dust on the floor and the top tube picks up all the dust on top of the table.4 points

I use "Baby Soda Bottles" that are test tube looking that are the blanks of a 2 liter soda bottle before it is formed. I bought them from Steve Spangler Science and came with a plastic rack. I use a Sharpie to mark the blade size on the lid.2 points -
I too have a test tube rack although not as 'professional' as Dans. Mine is just a piece of pine that I put holes in with a forstner bit.2 points

Kevin, this is the Seyco dust collector I have. I love it!! I had them provide a drill chuck on the right side of the grinder so I can use my 3M sanding disks with 1/4" shank. Brian2 points

ive been using bob smith medium ca for years for backers. run a bead around the perimeter on the back of the fretwork, dabs here and there and on fragile parts. set it on the backer. put a piece of ply over it and some weight. done in 2 minutes. if any squeezeout, it dries clear2 points

Mine has 2 trays, one for A4 and one for A3 as well as a single feed slot for heavy card. It's a Brother MFC J6920DW you can also enlarge or reduce from the printer, just like a copier. I don't use Brother cartridges, I use generic ones, a fraction of the cost and last just as long and give an equally good finish if you are printing photos onto photographic paper.2 points

As long as you are fit and well Bobby that's all that matters. We will see your photos when it is possible. Marg2 points

Lived in the same house for over 45 years. Every 3-5 years, I get the urge to reach the final solution to the shop out in the garage (this excludes gasoline and a match). A new shelf here, equipment moved there, sell some equipment, buy some equipment, pick my nose a few times for good measure, etc etc. And when I'm finished to perfection, it's back to total chaos in 2 months. Such is life!2 points -
Thanks I have found a printer with a SD port, YEA!!!.Just checking the reviews before ordering. found one at Walmart.the same one at Best Buy. Best Buy is a little cheaper.2 points

i HAVE A RACK THAT sTEVE GOOD HAS ON HIS SITE IT HOLDS ABOUT 8 TUBES AND THAT IS MORE THAN ENOUGH FOR MY WORK STATION ike1 point -
I just use a pva glue because Tony has lots of it. Put it onto my fretwork and the put on the backer, clamp and wait. Not 'professional' no doubt but it works for me1 point

This is my blade rack. I used to do a lot of demos at the woodworking club and the local Woodcraft store. I wanted my rack to be attractive. So I used Sapele to make it. My original rack was made from construction grade 2x4s. The overlay on the back was just decoration, cut from 1/8” Baltic birch. The tubes came from Sloans Woodshop, which is now closed. You can find tubes on the internet.1 point

Mine sort of looks like a test tube rack. 3 rows angle up towards the read. I hold blades in plastic tubes and have them numbered in the wood where the tube are. It's small so no big foot print and very handy.1 point -

Okay, I was talking about the scroll saw dust collector.. that works well for bottom side but nothing for the top.. and not sure it has the power to add on a top side collection hose.. this is the vac I am using https://www.seyco.com/dv-10a-cyclonic-action-scroll-saw-dust-collector/1 point

Very nice set up.. I keep watching these dust collection topics.. someday when I'm less busy and can get out and shop around to pick up some of the hose fittings etc.. I'm building and experimenting with different systems.. I'm not 100% satisfied with the seyco dust collector setup that I currently have.. works great for the stuff below the table... but the dust from the top gets knocked off the top and still ands in my lap and around.. I'll first try hooking a T or Y into my current system and see if it has enough to pull from both to get more of the dust from the top side.. It may work but I sorta have doubts.. Thanks for sharing your setup1 point

I don't really know them either since I have no first hand experience with either.. What little I researched a couple years back was.. Not all Fien brands have a Hepa filter... and they are single speed.. Festool I believe all have Hepa filter and come with two speeds.. Fien is cheaper... BUT they get pretty comparable when you buy the special HEPA filter you're looking at close to the same price points.. I'd maybe recommend looking to see which one has a dealer close to where you live for parts and service if / when ever needed.. I was leaning toward the Festool MIDI model.. mainly because it's priced right there with Fein once the extra cost of the HEPA filter was brought into the equation.. I have a local dealer for Festool.. actually where I buy my lumber and many of my supplies to I'm there all the time.. enough that they know me by name when I walk in, LOL I would think the box fan test "outside" would be irrelevant test because outside you have a breeze.. may not be much but I'm sure it'd influence the fine sawdust to blow in directions that normally wouldn't happen in a enclosed room.. With a good allergy type filter behind the fan.. it does slow down the air flow.. BUT.. you'll get that with your ceiling unit too.. I thought when I first got my ceiling unit that it wasn't going to do any good because it has less air flow than my box fan does.. It sure catches a lot of dust though.. Oh and filter surface area is smaller than the box fan too I would think.. maybe not as the physical size is smaller but maybe with all the waves ( for lack of a better word ) there is as much surface area being filtered.. Placement of the box fan is important too.. if you are able to set it on a bench so the height is about the level of the scroll saws work table you get better results than just setting the fan next to the saw on the floor.. The dust blower of the saw blowing toward the box fan a table height and as close to the saw as you can get without it being in your way is quite effective.. Honestly not sure you'll ever get to a point where you're getting 100% of the dust.. catching some is better than none.. some sort of dust collection is better than no collection at all.. When I was sawing in the house with my DeWalt saw.. I cut in a spare room right next to a big chest freezer.. The saw blower tube blew toward the freezer.. so I place the box fan on top of the freezer.. I didn't get any more dust than the normal dust my house gets before having the saw inside.. I didn't have a vacuum hooked up to it at all.. But I did rig up a box under the lower blade that caught the dust before it floated to the floor.. I would think between a vacuum system on your saw.. a box fan with filter.. and the hanging filter.. you should have a pretty good system provided you have it all set up and positioned well...1 point

I'm actually trying out the box fan right now while cutting outside. I purchased a new fan because my old one didn't seem to have much suction. Well the new one seems just as bad. It does seem to catch allot of dust, but I seen enough off to the sides that I wouldn't want to trust it inside yet. I think running the fan in combo with the Wen air filtration system would be a good combo. If I need a Fein or Fetool for this winter I'll probably just get the HF, leave it outside the door and put a Mr Heater in the garage. But sounds like I should keep using my orec vaccum. The hepa filter claims 0.3 particle filtration. Maybe with some nice duct work like shown in this thread it would do a better job. While the air seemed clear, it wasn't working to my liking as I'd find dust on things in the room. Which is why I stopped cutting inside. Can you link me to the exact Fein/Festool I should be getting? There are several models and I'm not familiar with them at all. Thanks again for all the help everyone.1 point

I forgot to put it's 1/8 in BB plywood. I don't stack cut. Bill1 point -
IF I was looking to use it on just a scroll saw.. and fine dust from a sander.. I think the HF unit is too big and bulky plus I'd shoot for something 3 micron... that's just my opinion... in a wood shop where a mask filter is worn and no one else " living in there with you " the HF collector makes sense.. Inside a house you'll want a strict filtration system.. I would look into a Fein or Festool type vac that has a true Hepa filter system if I was to go back to sawing in the house.. Believe the Festool is quieter on the low setting than the Fein is.. My goal is a Festool set up.. But I'm out in the shop.. wanting to move operations upstairs in the loft area where my inventory is stored and where I have finished insulating so heating and cooling would be more practical.. I would move my one of my saws up there, CNC... laser is already set up up there.. sanding and larger equipment would stay downstairs.. I bought the Seyco vac system but it's not getting enough of the dust for me to feel safe moving the saw upstairs yet.. I need a better system.. Ray mentioned above about the cheaper filtration systems being slightly less CFM than the pricey ones.. I think you could buy 4 of them for the price of that one.. that way there would be more filter surface area too, LOL I'll say.. a box fan and a good filter will be more CFM and probably more practical.. You'll be amazed what the box fan and filter will do.. There was a discussion about this some time ago and there was a Youtube video of a study of Box fan vrs. these hanging filtration systems... If I recall the box fan out performed the hanging unit.. One could hang a box fan to suck upwards and tape the filer on the back? A lot cheaper than a $100 unit.. You might search youtube for some information..1 point

Reminds me of why I dislike the never ending winters in Minnesota. After Super Bowl, "what now?? Hmmmmm...Think I'll inventory my life. Maybe finally organize those books (in the Dewey Decimal system, of course) now let's roam the house with a level, to REALLY get those photos straight and dusted.1 point

I have a small shop It's smaller then most small shops 8' X 10' No place to hang any thing. I would shopw a picture but In''t such a mess. When I am not useing it I store my tdoro lawn mower in there I have to put it on a angle so I can close the door. I built it 30 years ago and keep putting mor in it till I cant fit any thing else. When I want to use my table saw I have to put my scroll saw away and get the saw out.It is a mess. IKE1 point

Brother HL-3170CDW is what I use. The lighting got my first Brother printer. It has wired, wireless, and USB connections and works with any operating system. A big plus because this is a 100% Linux shop. It works great and never has a problem. There are lots of 3rd party toner cartridges available for it cheap. I worked in IT for more than 30 years. I that time, I came to call printers semi-automatic paper shredding devices. I have never had a jam other issue with this printer. I'm not too fond of any combination printer scanners. What you get many times is an OK printer and a poor scanner, which may be OK for your purposes, but remember that if the scanner stops working, you have to replace the scanner and the printer. It also adds complexity. I have an Epson Perfection V600 Photo scanner purchased directly from Epson.1 point

I have a Brother all in one. I love it. Scans are crisp and it is not hard on toner at all. I would highly recommend it. I also remember this topic being discussed here before. Can't remember exactly when but I believe you can search the forums here. Might be worth the look up and read.1 point -
I have Brother inkjet, three in one. It takes up to A3 paper, can copy and enlarge just like a copier, can scan and also copy multiple pages at once and print on both sides of the paper. I like the colour because I can alter the black lines to red on patterns for cutting. Also excellent for printing labels, business cards and stickers.1 point
