I couldn't see another suitable to place to post this. Had a good day at the local monthly markets today. I had concentrated on making stand-up puzzles over the last couple of weeks and had about 25, along with portraits etc to take along. looks like I'll be making more puzzles this month as I put $390 in the sky-rocket . The markets run from 8am - 1pm. Glad they were today when the temp was only 26c not on Wednesday when it is reckoned to reach 39c7 points

a little of what I have gotten done
Old Joe and 5 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I continued to make the split letters for the rest of the family.. just a repeat sort of post, so I did not include any of them and did a couple of new requests that I made and mailed off but did not take photos of. Here are four that I did for the our 5 month old new great grandkids. I used an initial teddy bear pattern from Steve Good but put in the baby's names in place of the initial. I don't remember posting the John Wayne piece I did for my new son in law but if I did I am sorry for the repeat. The same on the custom plaque for my wife's niece. I have been busy almost daily in my shop and I think I am about finished, which is good as we are going to be bomb barded with company through the holidays. Dick heppnerguy6 points -
Square gears
frankorona and 4 others reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
A Steve Good pattern. This was a quick cut, even though the pattern has two gears on it, I stack-cut the gears and washers. I modded the backer a bit so that it would fit in a base and be free-standing, and added a small crank (just a 1/4" piece of dowel inset and glued to the top gear). 1/2" ply for the gears, 1/8 for the washers, 1/4" dowel for the axles/crank, and 1/2" pine for backer and base. Took about two hours from printing the pattern to staining. Minwax Espresso and Natural stains. The gears do turn and mesh well, but a word of caution. When gluing in the axles after dry-fitting and staining, make sure they're perfectly straight up and down. I think one of mine got a fraction off, or the stain caused the wood to swell more than I expected...everything still turns, but not quite as easily as the dry run. Of course, that could also be because the posts were not glued in yet and had some wiggle-room....either way, a quick, fun pattern to cut.5 points -

"Mr. Bojangles" dies
TripleJScroller and 3 others reacted to OzarkSawdust for a topic
Jerry Jeff Walker died about two weeks ago. He was a great Texas singer/songwriter and many may or may not recognize his name...but have heard his songs. His most famous was "Mr. Bojangles" and it has been covered by tons of artists including Sammy Davis Jr. and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. The story for this song actually came from an old man talking about his life when Jerry Jeff landed in the drunk tank overnight in New Orleans in the mid 60s! London Homesick Blues - Anyone that has watched Austin City Limits on TV over the years has heard this song. The song's chorus was the Austin City Limits theme song for years. He has done many other songs covered by Merle Haggard, Jimmy Buffett, Willy Nelson, Lefty Frizzell, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan and more. I couldn't find a pattern so Mahendra stepped up and made me a great one from the Scamp CD cover. I cut it in 1/4" Baltic Birch and wiped it with Watco Danish Oil Natural. I'll use a black backer when I get around to making a frame. R.I.P. Jerry Jeff Walker4 points -
In a post Remembrance Day "Wreath" by Frank Pellow I made the following comment: "Also a nice idea to hang a seasonal welcome sign. I have the "Happy Fall Y'all" hanging right now, just need to find a few patterns for the other seasons...snow is not quite appropriate here in Florida." I did some searching and could not find an appropriate pattern for Winter in Florida so I made this pattern. Words and trees cut from 1/4" Maple solid core Plywood and affixed to a 1/2" sanded plywood backer painted Oaisis Blue. Trees painted with acrylic craft paints. Plaque mde weather proof with multiple coats of spray clear gloss polyurethane. Come the Winter solstice I'll swap my "Happy Fall y'all" plaque for this "Welcome to Our Winter Wonderland" plaque. I've got some time to find and cut some appropriate patterns for Spring and Summer in Florida plaques. .4 points

Dog Puzzle - Treed Walker
Old Joe and 2 others reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
The fourth custom order of the Dog and Cat Puzzles. This is called "Treed Walker Puzzle" and the pattern is by Harvey Byler. I used 3/4" Poplar approximately 8" x 10". Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #5R MGT blades. The veining was with a #1R MGT blade. he finish is one dipping if a diluted Shellac solution.3 points -
The search feature here does not necessarily look at just titles. If you type in say dust collection, you will get a list of pages that have dust collection in the body of the post. You will have to weed through all the pages, but at least it narrows it down for you!3 points

I know, another Eagle
Alexander Fadeev reacted to FrankEV for a topic
I cut this 11X14 Alex Fox Pattern titled Eagle-Flag from 1/4 inch thick Oak solid core plywood, that I stained with Minwax Weathered Oak stain to enhance the Oak color. The cut panel was affixed it to a 1/4 inch thick Mahogany solid core plywood backer that I darkened with Minwax Mahogany stain to improve the contrast. The panel was finished with multiple coats of spray lacquer. The cut was done exclusively with Pegas #0 spiral blades. Cutting the Oak was slightly more challenging than the Maple or BB Plywood I usually use. Had to cut a little slower and even the cutting sound was different. After the cut was complete the vertical grain alignment produced an interesting look. The panel is loose fit into a solid Red Oak Frame which I made and also darkened with the Minwax Mahogany stain. The Frame was finished with multiple coats of clear Gloss Polyurethane.1 point -

I know that we have had a ton of discussion on dust collection and recently a few folks have posted pics of what they have designed for their particular saws. For all that, I thank you all because I have picked up a ton of great ideas. But, with that said, I doubt most of us really understand "dust collection" so I thought I'd post this link to a great video that I just came across and watched. I learned a lot I hope you do too.1 point

I searched a lot of topics about this when I first started 20 years ago too.. You'll find that not many bring up this topic very often.. and what ones do bring it up are the ones trying to research.. it seems most are just worried about the "visible" dust... That said.. I never saw without a mask on... actually never even enter the shop without the mask.. even if I'm not going to work.. that fine dust gets stirred up just opening the door.. any movement.. But.. I do 4 times a year vacuum the whole shop with all the doors and windows open.. I have a old furnace blower I set up in the window to exhaust out any dust that gets stirred up from vacuuming.. and I vac everything. move the desk out vac the wall even the ceiling.. a couple days job about 4 times a year.. I really only have to do this now 2 times a year.. maybe not even that much.. since I've started running the box fan, the Grizzly version of the WEN 3410.. etc.. and collecting dust right at the saw.. The biggest dust culprit for me now is my random orbit sander.. This is going to get some dust collection of some sort once the busy holidays are over.. Like I've said in the past other postings.. a good vacuum instead of a shop vac.. collecting at the source, ( sander and saws etc. ) a good hanging collection system, a box fan with filter.. Will a person be able to collect 100% ? Probably not.. but as I've also said. any effort is better than no effort at all.. How dangerous is the find dust (I think ) is going to vary from one person to the next.. and also what you're cutting... Cigarettes state right on the package and people still smoke.. I know people that have sawed for many years in a small enclosed room and no mask at all.. I'm not saying to not worry about the dust.. but any effort you give it is better than no effort at all... and no matter what system you have.. you'll probably never catch 100%..1 point

Thank you Ray, very nice and very informative video. It does an excellent job of telling us all about the ins and outs of collecting the larger parts of our sawdust. But I am concerned that it does not address the other part of the issue, the finer particles that go through the vacuum filters and remain airborne. These particles are smaller than 5 microns in size and will go through most filters. They are hazardous to our health. I refer you to the article "Wood Dust Safety" https://www.wood-database.com/wood-articles/wood-dust-safety/ This is actually what got me started on this topic, along with the suspected coarse filter in my shop vac. This in addition to concerns about Wood Allergies and Toxicity, see the article https://www.wood-database.com/wood-articles/wood-allergies-and-toxicity/. I am now looking at air filtration systems like the Wen 3410 and 3415, which include a 1 micron filter, to control these finer particles. In my defense, I told you in my introduction "Newbie from Texas", October 22nd, that I intended to read everything I could find to educate myself about scroll sawing.1 point

I like your design here.. What is the font you used here? I love it but do not have it on my computer. We have the same winter difference here in Southern Arizona as it is going to be back up to 90 this week. Has been in the 60's and mid 70's following our record 100 plus days this year. Thanks for posting Dick heppnerguy1 point -

Jerry Jeff Walker was awesome musician! Being a recovering Red Neck myself, I still listen to his music. Up against the wall red neck mother! RIP JJW1 point -
I have the same Delta 1hp dust collector that Stumpy shows in the video. Eventually, I learned that if reduce neck down a 4-inch hose to 2.5-inches, it doesn't work as good as my vacuum with a quality filter. I have a good many tools, and none of them have a 4-inch port. The dust collector sits idle most of the time.1 point

I follow Stumpy every so often. Knows a lot of stuff. He makes a lot of sense with DC. However most of what he says is more applicable to those with lots of machinery, lots of space and lots of money. I think most on this site are pretty average and have smaller work areas and pretty much basic equipment for scrolling and are somewhat limited in doing serious woodwork like building furniture and such projects. I have a HF 13 gallon DC. My gates are a tennis ball stuck in the end of the hose. We have a city tennis court next to out back yard and tennis balls fly...well you know, so we collect them. I use a 2.5" flex hose on my mini lathe and router. Scroll saws are just little machines and make a little dust. That's why so many of us just use a vacuum with a Dust Deputy or similar device. Does not take much to pick up small amounts of sawdust. Our tubing or hose runs are short and diameters are small. Nothing is very elaborate but rather quite simple. If it were not I'd just have to stop inhaling. I love these discussions and the ideas you all bring to the table.1 point

Blade storage systems / racks what are you using?

Larry, I'm going to try to give you an answer to that question/suggestion. I have tried many times to use the search feature to find something that I know has been talked about prior. But for the life of me, I never seem to be able to use the right "search" criteria to find what I'm looking for. Every once in a while it works but most generally it doesn't so I just post a new question/topic. And, I'm never disappointed because of the vast knowledge here and it is forever changing.1 point -
Dang it! This is a most disgusting bunch of posts. Hadn't thought about a laser printer. I have two ink jet printer and now (not my fault) I ended up ordering a laser printer. My wife wasn't much help. When I mentioned it to her she just told me to do whatever I want. Not much I can do about it now. It is a BrotherDCPL2550DW. B&W with scanner. $159 at Amazon. Hope I like it. There are free returns.1 point

We have a Epson XP340,bought it at Walmarts. It is wireless and the ink cartridges are the cheapest of pretty much all of the other machines. I can do black and white or color. Scans well, I have even put flat ornaments on the scanner and got a good pattern. No Problem. We buy our cartridges off E-bay and I can always get a set (4- one black and one of each color) for less then $30.00. Just be sure the seller is NOT in China, Korea etc. Its a great little machine for around $40.00.1 point

OCtoolguy reacted to nrscroller for a topic
HI, I have a brother black and white laser printer with scanner and I love it for scroll saw patterns. When you buy new toner get the regular Brother brand and the larger soze cartridge, I recently got a cheaper one off ebay and it was not the best. Didn't last long. Also about once a week pull your cartridge out of the holder and genly shake it up and down a couple times to stir up the toner so you get even color. Bill1 point -

Someone here taught me to put a plastic drinking straw in the blade tube. Place the slightly used blade in the drinking straw to segregate it from new blades. Easy peasy!1 point -
Yes, it does dry clear, however, I still clean up any squeeze out as it will inhibit oil absorption.1 point

With Aileen’s Tacky glue I can have my project in oil 15 minutes after gluing. Been doing this for 20 years without failure.1 point
-
I often wonder how chemical resistant the different glues are.. I glue to unfinished wood.. wait 12 -24 hours for glue to dry.. then I soak in Danish oil for about 10 minutes.. pull out and set another 10 min. then wipe off and let dry.. I've not had any issues with the chemicals loosening the glue bond... but it's something I constantly worry about.. I use the Tite-bond translucent glue.. always have and always will mainly because I haven't encountered any issues with it... afraid to try anything else.. because of this method and worries of a disaster, LOL Any thoughts on the chemicals and the glue?1 point

ive been using bob smith medium ca for years for backers. run a bead around the perimeter on the back of the fretwork, dabs here and there and on fragile parts. set it on the backer. put a piece of ply over it and some weight. done in 2 minutes. if any squeezeout, it dries clear1 point
-
When i think the glue will ooze out and bee seen i brush on clear tacky glue. I put the glue onto the fretwork side. Takes a while but its nit as bad as you think once you get going. If it not in an are that oozes out I just use wood glue. I always use a paint brush to apply it either way. Doesnt take as much as you think.1 point

I have my opinion on this, but I'll keep it to myself. But I would like to say this...that when George W. Bush was elected, I had never seen the type of disrespect for a sitting President as I did with him.. and it got worse with each President since and I am going to assume that it will just get worse with each one from here on out. I'm not saying which party I lean towards but I have shown respect for the "other" parties President since I have been old enough to know better. I have read two autobiographies from 2 Presidents, they both mentioned the same thing.. they don't have the power that most people think they have. It's not 1 man's fault nor should 1 man get all of the praise for things that happen. We as a nation must show respect, not just for the parties, but for each other, in everyday life. How often do you see someone pull out in front of someone on the road? 9 out of 10 times that going to lead to one of them giving the "International Sign". I've pulled out in front of people before, not on purpose, but because I didn't see them or thought I had more time,, I always give a "I'm sorry" type of wave. How many times do you see someone not use a turn signal? That's being disrespectful right there, not to mention dangerous. If you pulled out in front of someone with the buggy at a grocery store, I'm pretty sure that you would apologize to that person and not give them the finger. It's when we get behind the wheel of a car or in front of a keyboard that we become badasses and disrespectful. I hope in my next life I'm placed in Mayberry! LOL Ok, off my soapbox. I hope that I didn't break the rules of the site for saying my peace. I tried to stay non political or show disrespect so I think I'm alright with this.1 point

I think the one change I'd make to the Hegner is one that CharleyL made to his. If I recall correctly. He sawed off the boss that stops the upper arm from lifting all the way. I'd maybe take it off a little at a time though to see at what point it let the arm rise to make it easy to top feed. I don't know if it's necessary to actually remove the entire boss.1 point
