    Time to Return

Well, for some reason, around last may, I decided I needed a break from scrolling.... I think I kinda got burned out and I also had neglected other important things because of the hobby. Anyway... I did check in here once in a while just to see what was going on in the scrolling world... A couple weeks ago, I spotted a post by @heppnerguy of a cutting he had done of a Fiona Kingdon patter that was in the last issue of SSW. I really loved what he had done. I don't take the magazine anymore and thought about ordering the issue,,, but with the cost of the mag and shipping... na, I think not. A couple days latter, I was at a grocery store with my wife, and we were by the magazine rack and there, the first thing I saw was the latest issue of SSW. I thought it must be an omen! So I bought it. Just finished cutting the pattern yesterday. I wasn't sure I would make it through the cutting because it has been a while and it is not a simple pattern. But, I did and am happy with the results... I haven't applied a finish yet. I think I want to dip it and then spray with Deft Clear coat, but I also want to plan around with a stain glass for a backer.... I don't have any stain glass so I will have to learn something about that. I cut it in 1/2" Beech. By the way, I did really miss the form, I am going to limit my time spent here, but very happy to be somewhat involved again... I have browsed around some and see some great projects have been done.

  3. I obtained the SVG pattern from Following Daisies/Etsy and modified it to add the oval and sized it to fit inside an 8X10 panel. Although it looked like it would work, this pattern IS NOT intended to be completed on a scroll saw as it is listed for Cricut and Sihouette. I managed to cut it, but the details of the flowers and the hummingbirds wings were very delicate tapering to very fine points and very difficult to cut as the wood lost all rigidity as the cuts were completed. The cut panel is 5/32” Walnut solid core ply that I further stained with Minwax Walnut stain to enhance the contrast. The cut panel was affixed to a 1/8” BB Ply that was enhanced with a coat of Minwax Natural Stain and the panel finished with multiple coats of Clear High Gloss spray Lacquer. I attempted to use Pegas #2/0 spiral blade with poor results so after only a few cuts I switched to Pegas #1/0 MGT R which produced much better results. The panel is loose fit into a simple Pine Frame the I made and stained with the same Minwax Walnut stain and then protected with Clear Gloss spray Polyurethane. I am totally unhappy with the finish. The stain may not have been thoroughly dry when I applied the poly and it did not lay down flat and smooth. I intend to replace the Frame and only used it for the picture. I’m attaching a PDF of my completed pattern as a challenge to anyone who might like to attempt cutting it. If you do, please show it to us and add your thoughts. BTW I was making this for my Lady who loves Hummingbirds. Already have two others hanging and wanted to supprise her with this one. FollowingDaisies_Flowers_Hummingbird.pdf

    Names Name Names

Every year I do a few name ornaments from 1/4 inch birch ply for 5 bucks. I stack cut them just to make sure of no breakage so customers get two for one. This year they blew up! I've done over 50 different names so far this year. Can't even fit them all in the picture!

    Black or brown backer

This is today’s project. Which backer should I use, brown or black! In this particular choice, your vote will count. No dominion software is being used! Only vote if your alive! Votes casted tomorrow will not count, even if it’s mailed in!

  7. i have just joined the Scrollsaw Village and while scanning the site, I noticed that the January Challenge was about your first scrolled projects. From a historical perspective, I would like to tell you a story. I was in an antique marketplace and as I was leaving, I spotted a nice oak picture frame lying on the floor against the wall. I picked it up and asked the owner, "How much?" and he said, "I guess it's such an odd size, people don't have a picture to fit it, I'll sell it to you for $5.00" So I took it. When I got it home, on examination it was a professionally made oak frame with a liner and had never been used. I knew I had gotten a real bargain. A few days later, I started an all day class in scroll sawing with my saw. The course and the instructor were excellent. Along with many learning activities, we spent some time cutting lines and zig-zags on practice patterns. This was as exciting as tracing letters in elementary school. I had to find another activity to learn how to scroll. I decided to try a project for my new frame, a bit large for a beginning piece. I cut a plywood board to fit the frame. It was 24" x 21", pretty large for an initial project. I found some scroll saw patterns for sale on a machinery website that stated "NO PILOT HOLES REQUIRED" and thought this was a great idea. Because of the size of the frame, I bought two layered patterns to fill the frame. After cutting miles of kerfs in light, thin plywood, my scroll sawing skills had a huge improvement. Layering and gluing the pieces was the easy part. We still have this project hanging in our home. I have cut many scroll saw patterns since that time and have never seen another pattern that stated "NO PILOT HOLES REQUIRED". Are these types of patterns still available today? Regards, Dick

    Hawk dust collection

I just went to the website for the Metropolitan Vacuum Company. They are the makers of the MetroVac500 and many other innovative items. I wrote a letter to them explaining that they might be missing out on a niche business out here with all the scrollers who are concerned with the fine dust and want to keep as much of it confined and caught as possible. I explained that some of us are using their products now but not as effectively as we might be able to if they designed, built and sold a vac system that could work on our saws with minor retrofitting. I left my name, address and phone number so we'll see if I get any contact back from them. They build some neat stuff for specialty industries.

  11. I haven’t been around for a while, had other issues going on, but I have gotten my juices flowing again the past few days. I added inlay to two Alex Fox baskets and really like the effects. In addition, I decided to add some power carving to this full 1” African Rosewood trivet. I downloaded the pattern, but forgot where I found it. I went through more than a couple of blades on it, as the wood was tough. Then I decided to personalize it with my power carver. Hope you all enjoy these.

  13. I continued to make the split letters for the rest of the family.. just a repeat sort of post, so I did not include any of them and did a couple of new requests that I made and mailed off but did not take photos of. Here are four that I did for the our 5 month old new great grandkids. I used an initial teddy bear pattern from Steve Good but put in the baby's names in place of the initial. I don't remember posting the John Wayne piece I did for my new son in law but if I did I am sorry for the repeat. The same on the custom plaque for my wife's niece. I have been busy almost daily in my shop and I think I am about finished, which is good as we are going to be bomb barded with company through the holidays. Dick heppnerguy

  15. I appreciate all the fine comments. The wood that this project is done on is Black Walnut. When I am contemplating a scroll project, I spend time studying the hardwoods, native and imported, for the grain patterns, defects, knots, bark, raw edges, color and general shape. Then, I decide on a pattern, it's size, orientation, pattern modification, etc.as well as the subject. The "sun rays" on this board were very dramatic and told me how the jaguar would be placed. Didn't have to think about that one too much. I was very pleased how this improved the jaguars presence. I will show you another project where the black walnut spoke up. The pheasant demonstrated the classic startled response and was shooting up from brush, grasses, and weeds. When you see the grain patterns on this board, you can see why no cutting or carving could improve that.

    Time to Return

Glad to see you back on here again. I do not think you will be able to stay away very long as there are just too many great people here and it is so easy to miss them all when one decides too be absent for awhile. We are going to Oregon on December 6th but will not have a car, so I most likely will not have the opportunity to go see you this time, as I always try to do when in Heppner. It will be a short visit and we will probably be doing some family Christmas time then. I will try to give you a call and at least chat with you some. Nicely done piece, as usual. I made another one for Sharon for our anniversary, which was yesterday. I did a little colorization to bring out the flowers within the leaves but decided not to do the leaves, as I was planning to do because I am not talented in that field at all. I did miss one of the cuts in one of the birds, just overlooked it and luckily I even missed it in my hole drilling. You and Patti have a nice holiday season.. Dick

    Large Letters

Hi, Dan, I wanted some sheets like you are referring to for a LARGE project and the price was too prohibitive for that project but, for 6" numbers, maybe a sheet like this would be worth the price. https://www.lowes.com/pd/SANALITE-POLYETHYLENE-0-25-in-T-x-12-in-W-x-48-in-L-Off-white-Plastic-Sheet/1001463508 As you can see these are 12" wide by 48" tall but, other sizes are available. A bit expensive but, they should last forever. Menards has similar materials and I would think Home Depot or other box stores would also but, the stores advertise Polyethylene, HDPE, Polypropylene, Acrylic, polycarbonate, and who knows what all so, you would probably have to actually look at what they have in store and in what thicknesses to suit your purpose. For house numbers or something like that, these Polypropylene sheets are extremely cheap and would probably work but, up close they may not be aesthetically desirable. They are fluted or corrugated so the edge isn't smooth. https://www.menards.com/main/doors-windows-millwork/acrylic-glass-sheets/amerilux-0-158-x24-x-36-thick-fluted-polypropylene-sheets/blucrp24x36/p-1539107081946-c-7551.htm?tid=401167036542638643&ipos=1 God Bless! 44. Tony, hope you don't mind me jumping onto your thread. Just thought I would just add my 8" dia version from the original pattern unmodified. Cut panel is 5/32" Maple solid core ply affixed to a 1/2" thk sanded ply backer. Too large and heavy to be a real tree onament so I just made it a plaque that will be hung on a wall when I decorate for christmas. I used some Red, Green and Black Acrylic Craft paint to add some color. Cut with Pegas #0 Spiral blades and finished with multiple coasts of clear gloss Polyurethane as it may be hung outside. I can see in the pic my cutting is not as good as Tony's. I think I hurried a little too much. However, when viewed from a distance it looks OK. Thanks to meflick for posting up the link to the Pattern. I sure others will jump on this pattern and cut their version.
