  1. This project was done on a new wood for me from Uruguay called Red Grandis, It was nice to work with. This is the natural color, a light reddish tone.

  2. I haven’t been around for a while, had other issues going on, but I have gotten my juices flowing again the past few days. I added inlay to two Alex Fox baskets and really like the effects. In addition, I decided to add some power carving to this full 1” African Rosewood trivet. I downloaded the pattern, but forgot where I found it. I went through more than a couple of blades on it, as the wood was tough. Then I decided to personalize it with my power carver. Hope you all enjoy these.

  4. i have just joined the Scrollsaw Village and while scanning the site, I noticed that the January Challenge was about your first scrolled projects. From a historical perspective, I would like to tell you a story. I was in an antique marketplace and as I was leaving, I spotted a nice oak picture frame lying on the floor against the wall. I picked it up and asked the owner, "How much?" and he said, "I guess it's such an odd size, people don't have a picture to fit it, I'll sell it to you for $5.00" So I took it. When I got it home, on examination it was a professionally made oak frame with a liner and had never been used. I knew I had gotten a real bargain. A few days later, I started an all day class in scroll sawing with my saw. The course and the instructor were excellent. Along with many learning activities, we spent some time cutting lines and zig-zags on practice patterns. This was as exciting as tracing letters in elementary school. I had to find another activity to learn how to scroll. I decided to try a project for my new frame, a bit large for a beginning piece. I cut a plywood board to fit the frame. It was 24" x 21", pretty large for an initial project. I found some scroll saw patterns for sale on a machinery website that stated "NO PILOT HOLES REQUIRED" and thought this was a great idea. Because of the size of the frame, I bought two layered patterns to fill the frame. After cutting miles of kerfs in light, thin plywood, my scroll sawing skills had a huge improvement. Layering and gluing the pieces was the easy part. We still have this project hanging in our home. I have cut many scroll saw patterns since that time and have never seen another pattern that stated "NO PILOT HOLES REQUIRED". Are these types of patterns still available today? Regards, Dick

    Time to Return

Well, for some reason, around last may, I decided I needed a break from scrolling.... I think I kinda got burned out and I also had neglected other important things because of the hobby. Anyway... I did check in here once in a while just to see what was going on in the scrolling world... A couple weeks ago, I spotted a post by @heppnerguy of a cutting he had done of a Fiona Kingdon patter that was in the last issue of SSW. I really loved what he had done. I don't take the magazine anymore and thought about ordering the issue,,, but with the cost of the mag and shipping... na, I think not. A couple days latter, I was at a grocery store with my wife, and we were by the magazine rack and there, the first thing I saw was the latest issue of SSW. I thought it must be an omen! So I bought it. Just finished cutting the pattern yesterday. I wasn't sure I would make it through the cutting because it has been a while and it is not a simple pattern. But, I did and am happy with the results... I haven't applied a finish yet. I think I want to dip it and then spray with Deft Clear coat, but I also want to plan around with a stain glass for a backer.... I don't have any stain glass so I will have to learn something about that. I cut it in 1/2" Beech. By the way, I did really miss the form, I am going to limit my time spent here, but very happy to be somewhat involved again... I have browsed around some and see some great projects have been done.

  9. I continued to make the split letters for the rest of the family.. just a repeat sort of post, so I did not include any of them and did a couple of new requests that I made and mailed off but did not take photos of. Here are four that I did for the our 5 month old new great grandkids. I used an initial teddy bear pattern from Steve Good but put in the baby's names in place of the initial. I don't remember posting the John Wayne piece I did for my new son in law but if I did I am sorry for the repeat. The same on the custom plaque for my wife's niece. I have been busy almost daily in my shop and I think I am about finished, which is good as we are going to be bomb barded with company through the holidays. Dick heppnerguy

  10. I obtained the SVG pattern from Following Daisies/Etsy and modified it to add the oval and sized it to fit inside an 8X10 panel. Although it looked like it would work, this pattern IS NOT intended to be completed on a scroll saw as it is listed for Cricut and Sihouette. I managed to cut it, but the details of the flowers and the hummingbirds wings were very delicate tapering to very fine points and very difficult to cut as the wood lost all rigidity as the cuts were completed. The cut panel is 5/32” Walnut solid core ply that I further stained with Minwax Walnut stain to enhance the contrast. The cut panel was affixed to a 1/8” BB Ply that was enhanced with a coat of Minwax Natural Stain and the panel finished with multiple coats of Clear High Gloss spray Lacquer. I attempted to use Pegas #2/0 spiral blade with poor results so after only a few cuts I switched to Pegas #1/0 MGT R which produced much better results. The panel is loose fit into a simple Pine Frame the I made and stained with the same Minwax Walnut stain and then protected with Clear Gloss spray Polyurethane. I am totally unhappy with the finish. The stain may not have been thoroughly dry when I applied the poly and it did not lay down flat and smooth. I intend to replace the Frame and only used it for the picture. I’m attaching a PDF of my completed pattern as a challenge to anyone who might like to attempt cutting it. If you do, please show it to us and add your thoughts. BTW I was making this for my Lady who loves Hummingbirds. Already have two others hanging and wanted to supprise her with this one. FollowingDaisies_Flowers_Hummingbird.pdf

  11. Hi, Dick, I didn't find man really good examples but, you can still find LAYERED scroll saw patterns that require no pilot holes and some with few interior cuts. https://woodenteddybear.com/search?type=product&q=layered I used to like these type of patterns but, it seems I was in the minority. I think the attached pic was from a project in about 2005. God Bless! Spirithorse

  13. Thank you for asking and to all of you for your kind words and compliments. Nothing really wrong, just dealing with the hand that life deals me. It’s weird, the Covid virus has put severe restrictions on doing many things that we all used to do. You would think I would be knocking out a mountain of projects, but I just hit a lull, (or a wall) recently and got kind of stagnant. Then, bingo! I got rejuvenated about a week ago and have a whole lineup of things to get to. Peace & Harmony to all of you, and stay safe! Joe

    Snow Globe

This was a pattern I bought off of Etsy that I thought was interesting. The pattern was not detailed at all with very fuzzy lines so I did the best I could. It's a little rough but I do love the layered look. Still have a long list to get through before Christmas!

Some very thin cutting on this lettering. I would describe what and where this is but I think the picture speaks for itself LOL Half inch BB plywood. Worn Navy, Worn Gray and Provincial are the stain colors. Lettering cut with a #2 reverse tooth.

Joe,,,, I'm just returning from that wall.... I know of what you speak.... Your projects are awesome.... the inlays really take the baskets up a notch as does the power carving on the trivet. That should not sit under a hot pan,,,, it is definitely a wall hanger. All very well done.

  23. Hi , thought i'd give you this bit of advice (incase you didn't know this) When you download files from a site and its not in your trusted list then the file is blocked from executing anything by the virus software, I'll assume your using windows: Find the file whichever folder (usually 'downloads') it is in then: ! select it using a right mouse button click 2 scroll down to properties 3 left click on properties, then left click on the box that says 'unblock' 4 then left click on 'apply' 5 then left click on 'ok' Now your file is ready to be opened by left clicking on it as usual. Please note any programs you downloaded to install also need to be 'unblocked' because they can go through the motions of installing but not be installed past setting up empty folders to make room for the estimated size of the software your trying to install. Best of luck.

    Names Name Names

Every year I do a few name ornaments from 1/4 inch birch ply for 5 bucks. I stack cut them just to make sure of no breakage so customers get two for one. This year they blew up! I've done over 50 different names so far this year. Can't even fit them all in the picture!

  34. I had one for years complete with glass scales and an AccuRite display. Variable speed and power feed. I no longer had the strength to do much with it so I sold it along with a nice 12 inch lathe. I replaced it with a Grizzly mini mill and have a nice MaxiMat7. I also have a lot of Sherline equipment along with a 8mm watchmaker's lathe with about 70 collets. Unfortunately I no longer have the energy to do much with them. I'd give them up in exchange for energy. But that is what old age does. However, I am blessed with scrolling. One day as I sat musing a voice came to me saying, "Cheer up, things could be worse." So I cheered up and sure enough things got worse! So I stopped doing that. Sorry. I guess I really hijacked this thread! I do like talking shop.

    Age Old Question-Wood?

Have you tried Woodworkers Source? They are in Phoenix, AZ. I know they have BB plywood and will cut it to your dimensions. I have not bought any, but have bought lumber and was very satisfied with my purchase. https://www.woodworkerssource.com/baltic-birch-plywood.html

  45. Larry, I'm going to try to give you an answer to that question/suggestion. I have tried many times to use the search feature to find something that I know has been talked about prior. But for the life of me, I never seem to be able to use the right "search" criteria to find what I'm looking for. Every once in a while it works but most generally it doesn't so I just post a new question/topic. And, I'm never disappointed because of the vast knowledge here and it is forever changing.

  47. Someone here taught me to put a plastic drinking straw in the blade tube. Place the slightly used blade in the drinking straw to segregate it from new blades. Easy peasy!
