    OSPREY

A few years ago. a local organization of bird watchers wanted to introduce some Ospreys into a lake in our area. They built a high tower and the start of a nest on a platform on the top. The lake contained an ample supply of fish and a pair of these birds were introduced. The whole procedure was successful, the birds had an offspring and returned the following years to continue the process. I did this project to commemorate this success. I also made the textured frame. Dick

  2. One of the people I work with needed a display case for a miniature flag in a veteran's shadow box. I made this from 3/8" square poplar with only glue joints. He is making a backer and cover for it. Still have a touch of sanding to do, but it came out better than I first thought. Tried a puzzle blade, but just could not hold the angles tight enough, so I went to a hobby size miter box. And yes, the photo is rotated 90 degrees in the phone.

  3. A big THANK YOU is going out to Bernd (munzieb) who was willing to share the Hummingbird pattern for the lamp body side panels. My version is also made from solid Oak. Body Panels cut from 1/4x5 1/2 x 48 and the top and base was cut from 1/2x5 1/2x24. The Base and top are my design. The lamp body is 4 1/2" square by 10" tall. The base is 5 1/2" square x 1 1/2" tall. The Top is 5 1/2 Square x 1/2" tall. The vertical edges of the body panels were beveled to 45 degrees on my bench belt sander. All the mitering and chamfering done for the base and top was done on the table saw. I use a frame strap clamp during glue up to insure the base was square. I use the scrolll saw to cut the cutouts in at the bottom of the base sides before glue up. Like Bernd, I used amber plexiglass. However, I made the plexiglass more translucent by applying velum with sparay adhesive to the inside face. The electrical components consist of a 6 ft lamp cord with an inline rocker switch, short lamp pipe nipple, candlelabra socket and LED bulb. The top is loose fit for access to the bulb. I stack cut the four sides and used Pegas #3 MGT R Blades. Cutting the 1" thick stack was slow but not too difficult. After assembly and sanding, the lamp and the loose top was finished with many coats of clear gloss spray Lacquer. Made this lamp for my lady as she loves Hummingbirds. That makes two Hummingbird plaques, one Hummingbird framed piece and now this Hummingbird lamp . She is Happy.

  6. Just braggin' about my view today. LOL First of 3 holiday events in a row. Week 1 was solid. Week 2 at the same place next Saturday. Week 3 just up the road and then done for the year. Fortunate to have had my local markets this year while all of my big events were cancelled.

    Good Enough ?

It's been said many times, "We are our worst critics"!! The problems you see are because you know where they are based on the pattern. Pattern is in the waste can and cutting is framed and looks good. I'm not going to search for what I think MIGHT be an issue. It will look good on the wall.

  8. After my craft show, I received numerous orders that I just finished. Now I can start other projects that I have to do for Christmas, also I have to get my kitchen ready for new cupboards and counters in the new year. We will have been without kitchen counters and cupboards for approximately 8 months. Our old kitchen sold 2 days after we posted it and all the cabinets maker are way behind on their orders. I thought retirement was supposed to be relax and enjoy, I think I work more now than when I had a job (IT manager) LOL PS these critters with mask from Sue Mey were my best sellers I cut more than 100 of them

  9. I haven’t been around for a while, had other issues going on, but I have gotten my juices flowing again the past few days. I added inlay to two Alex Fox baskets and really like the effects. In addition, I decided to add some power carving to this full 1” African Rosewood trivet. I downloaded the pattern, but forgot where I found it. I went through more than a couple of blades on it, as the wood was tough. Then I decided to personalize it with my power carver. Hope you all enjoy these.

I finally finished this piece for my Son in Law as a gift. Tony helped with the frame. Now I'm having doubts, I see so many flaws. An honest opinion please,, would you be happy to receive this ? Edited to add that this pattern was created by @grampa and found in the library.

    Another Fret Box

Found another pattern I wanted to try out. Problem was that there was a top and front/back side pattern but no sides. I did some finagling on the computer and shrunk the front pattern to match the side dimension. Its 1/4" oak with shellac and lacquer finish. Box is 7 x 6" and 3" high.

  16. Huntsville, is a sizeable city. I would check with local cabinet shops. Many cabinet shops use baltic birch. They may be willing to sell you some or give you a name of the local supplier.

  17. Wow impressive you did some job on it, I bet at night it looks stunning, I use cm for measurements rather than inches, we should together as a group all agree to put a playing card like 5 of clubs in the photo, they are same size the world over, easy to see the actual size of our items, I love ur lamp

  21. Rockytime: You're a hard man - remember - smartphones didn't exist in 1979(ish) - and in 2020 - now 40 years later - I do have a smartphone - but actually using it is another thing entirely ... Not sure all is visible - but in the background is my woodrack - and off to the left is our yard ladders etc. Jay .

  22. I have a combination belt and disk sander. the belt is vertical and has a small table in front of the belt. The table can be adjusted fro 90 degrees to 45 degrees. With the table tiped down to 45 degrees I simply lay the panel on the table and move it side to side while gently sanding the edge to a sharp pinted edge. Kinda like sharpening a chisel on a grinder. Here is a couple of pics...sorry about the mess.

  24. i have just joined the Scrollsaw Village and while scanning the site, I noticed that the January Challenge was about your first scrolled projects. From a historical perspective, I would like to tell you a story. I was in an antique marketplace and as I was leaving, I spotted a nice oak picture frame lying on the floor against the wall. I picked it up and asked the owner, "How much?" and he said, "I guess it's such an odd size, people don't have a picture to fit it, I'll sell it to you for $5.00" So I took it. When I got it home, on examination it was a professionally made oak frame with a liner and had never been used. I knew I had gotten a real bargain. A few days later, I started an all day class in scroll sawing with my saw. The course and the instructor were excellent. Along with many learning activities, we spent some time cutting lines and zig-zags on practice patterns. This was as exciting as tracing letters in elementary school. I had to find another activity to learn how to scroll. I decided to try a project for my new frame, a bit large for a beginning piece. I cut a plywood board to fit the frame. It was 24" x 21", pretty large for an initial project. I found some scroll saw patterns for sale on a machinery website that stated "NO PILOT HOLES REQUIRED" and thought this was a great idea. Because of the size of the frame, I bought two layered patterns to fill the frame. After cutting miles of kerfs in light, thin plywood, my scroll sawing skills had a huge improvement. Layering and gluing the pieces was the easy part. We still have this project hanging in our home. I have cut many scroll saw patterns since that time and have never seen another pattern that stated "NO PILOT HOLES REQUIRED". Are these types of patterns still available today? Regards, Dick

Brenda, as all above have said, we are our worst critic. Whenever I have a project that I have cut and I know it has flaws, I will set it aside for a wile, then I’ll come back to it in a week or two. Most times, the flaws disappear, or at least not noticeable. Your cutting looks great! If I owned that car, I would be thrilled to receive it as a gift, As long as I have been cutting, I don’t think I have cut a perfect project, but I have learned to fix most of my mistakes!

  36. It looks like Dremel wins this discussion. But if anyone is interested, here's an alternative. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HQONFVE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It is a table top drill press from Wen, $85 on Amazon. I use it and am happy with it.

  37. @stoney, just wanted to let you know,,, I did "the mod" on my Hegner a little over a week ago. It turned out to be very simple, as you said... the longest part being taping the hole. I was going real slow and careful doing that,,,, in a little ways back, in a little more and back out... Got the spring at an Ace Hardware. It was a little weak, held the arm up, but when I lowered the arm there was hardly any resistance and I didn't like the feel.... My saw also seemed to have more vibration than before the mod... so I made the spring a little shorter and it really helped. Not sure if the spring caused the vibration, I had to move the saw to work on it and I have to get it back in just the right spot or it will vibrate more. Anyway, I got it done and I glad I did it... helps to have the arm go up higher... I need to find a little orange paint now...

  42. Was just going to ask if anyone has heard from you.. haven't seen you posting in a really long time... Now I know what you've been up to... sorting pure junk plywood looking for that one good piece all this time... Good to see you posting again.. I ordered some from Cherokee this morning, part of the reason was we have gone on lockdown again and I didn't know if I'd make it until the lockdown is lifted..

  43. I have not purchased Baltic Birch from Cherokee yet but I have purchased some of there other woods and have never been disappointed...Next time I need BB I am going to try theirs.. I purchased some from Windsor Plywood the other day, and am ashamed of myself for buying it.. pure junk, but I was out, we are going back into lockdown, and I was afraid I would not be able to get any for sometime...

  44. Ouch, So the sites listed I looked at here so far Cherokee is the best deal.. $44 for 24 square foot.. free shipping.. Ooch was sold out of all 1/8" and the woodworkerssource was $41 for 24 square foot but shipping was another $20.. I realize the shipping is costing money.. and I suppose I'd have a days worth of travel and cutting the sheets up into the blanks.. But I get 25 square foot for $12 at my local lumber supplier.. so even the $44 is sticker shock to me.. I think I'm going to give them a try though as at the moment I'm way too busy to try to save a few $$ LOL. In the end it's really not a bad deal considering I have to take time to cut up the blanks.. etc.. wear on saw blades and machines too.. It's probably costing them around $15 to ship.. that's what kills the total price point.. Oh well it's only money. Hope they have a lot of stock.. might be out by the time I'm done, LOL
