  1. Thanks, @jerry1939 for the Santa Ornament pattern. My wife chose this pattern for about 12 co-workers for whom I cut a new ornament every year. God Bless! Spirithorse

  2. Cut a stack of 5 of these today.. customer seen the puzzle ( Harvey Bylers Pattern from Scott @ woodcraftbyscott.com ) and asked if I could make this design but as a ornament instead of a puzzle.. I resized it and cut it from 1/8" BBply..

    Another Fret Box

Found another pattern I wanted to try out. Problem was that there was a top and front/back side pattern but no sides. I did some finagling on the computer and shrunk the front pattern to match the side dimension. Its 1/4" oak with shellac and lacquer finish. Box is 7 x 6" and 3" high.

  4. After my craft show, I received numerous orders that I just finished. Now I can start other projects that I have to do for Christmas, also I have to get my kitchen ready for new cupboards and counters in the new year. We will have been without kitchen counters and cupboards for approximately 8 months. Our old kitchen sold 2 days after we posted it and all the cabinets maker are way behind on their orders. I thought retirement was supposed to be relax and enjoy, I think I work more now than when I had a job (IT manager) LOL PS these critters with mask from Sue Mey were my best sellers I cut more than 100 of them

    Good Enough ?

I finally finished this piece for my Son in Law as a gift. Tony helped with the frame. Now I'm having doubts, I see so many flaws. An honest opinion please,, would you be happy to receive this ? Edited to add that this pattern was created by @grampa and found in the library.

    OSPREY

A few years ago. a local organization of bird watchers wanted to introduce some Ospreys into a lake in our area. They built a high tower and the start of a nest on a platform on the top. The lake contained an ample supply of fish and a pair of these birds were introduced. The whole procedure was successful, the birds had an offspring and returned the following years to continue the process. I did this project to commemorate this success. I also made the textured frame. Dick

Brenda, as all above have said, we are our worst critic. Whenever I have a project that I have cut and I know it has flaws, I will set it aside for a wile, then I’ll come back to it in a week or two. Most times, the flaws disappear, or at least not noticeable. Your cutting looks great! If I owned that car, I would be thrilled to receive it as a gift, As long as I have been cutting, I don’t think I have cut a perfect project, but I have learned to fix most of my mistakes!

  12. One of the people I work with needed a display case for a miniature flag in a veteran's shadow box. I made this from 3/8" square poplar with only glue joints. He is making a backer and cover for it. Still have a touch of sanding to do, but it came out better than I first thought. Tried a puzzle blade, but just could not hold the angles tight enough, so I went to a hobby size miter box. And yes, the photo is rotated 90 degrees in the phone.

  14. Danny a quick web search found Madison Lumber in Huntsville and according to their website they sell Russian birch (same as baltic birch) in 5x5 sheets. While their website says they are wholesale they should be able to give you a name of a retailer or a local business that buys from them. Madison Lumber (madisonlumberinc.com)

Thank You all for your encouragement, it means a lot !! After finishing it last night I thought my straight lines could have been straighter, my curves could have been neater and the frame didn't fit quite properly so I filled the gaps and to me they were glaringly obvious, however, I've had a sleep since last night and this morning it looks a lot better I really appreciate all your kind comments.

    Good Enough ?

It's been said many times, "We are our worst critics"!! The problems you see are because you know where they are based on the pattern. Pattern is in the waste can and cutting is framed and looks good. I'm not going to search for what I think MIGHT be an issue. It will look good on the wall.

  22. A big THANK YOU is going out to Bernd (munzieb) who was willing to share the Hummingbird pattern for the lamp body side panels. My version is also made from solid Oak. Body Panels cut from 1/4x5 1/2 x 48 and the top and base was cut from 1/2x5 1/2x24. The Base and top are my design. The lamp body is 4 1/2" square by 10" tall. The base is 5 1/2" square x 1 1/2" tall. The Top is 5 1/2 Square x 1/2" tall. The vertical edges of the body panels were beveled to 45 degrees on my bench belt sander. All the mitering and chamfering done for the base and top was done on the table saw. I use a frame strap clamp during glue up to insure the base was square. I use the scrolll saw to cut the cutouts in at the bottom of the base sides before glue up. Like Bernd, I used amber plexiglass. However, I made the plexiglass more translucent by applying velum with sparay adhesive to the inside face. The electrical components consist of a 6 ft lamp cord with an inline rocker switch, short lamp pipe nipple, candlelabra socket and LED bulb. The top is loose fit for access to the bulb. I stack cut the four sides and used Pegas #3 MGT R Blades. Cutting the 1" thick stack was slow but not too difficult. After assembly and sanding, the lamp and the loose top was finished with many coats of clear gloss spray Lacquer. Made this lamp for my lady as she loves Hummingbirds. That makes two Hummingbird plaques, one Hummingbird framed piece and now this Hummingbird lamp . She is Happy.

    Time to Return

Well, for some reason, around last may, I decided I needed a break from scrolling.... I think I kinda got burned out and I also had neglected other important things because of the hobby. Anyway... I did check in here once in a while just to see what was going on in the scrolling world... A couple weeks ago, I spotted a post by @heppnerguy of a cutting he had done of a Fiona Kingdon patter that was in the last issue of SSW. I really loved what he had done. I don't take the magazine anymore and thought about ordering the issue,,, but with the cost of the mag and shipping... na, I think not. A couple days latter, I was at a grocery store with my wife, and we were by the magazine rack and there, the first thing I saw was the latest issue of SSW. I thought it must be an omen! So I bought it. Just finished cutting the pattern yesterday. I wasn't sure I would make it through the cutting because it has been a while and it is not a simple pattern. But, I did and am happy with the results... I haven't applied a finish yet. I think I want to dip it and then spray with Deft Clear coat, but I also want to plan around with a stain glass for a backer.... I don't have any stain glass so I will have to learn something about that. I cut it in 1/2" Beech. By the way, I did really miss the form, I am going to limit my time spent here, but very happy to be somewhat involved again... I have browsed around some and see some great projects have been done.

  25. Welcome to the village.. Without a idea of the age of the saw.. a model number or some picture of what you have it's pretty much hard to know what you have and what you need.. A lot of the skill brand saws are also rebranded under several different other names.. and depending on what vintage the saw might be.. many of them are basically a Harbor Freight, WEN, and I also think some of them are the same as the Ryobi brand.. These that I speak of are skil models 3330 and 3335.. Maybe a youtube video of these would help you understand what you need..

Paul you did a great job on Fiona's pattern. I know what I am talking about because I am, right now, attempting to cut it out of 3cm thick Spalted Maple and it's a real effort. I very much approve your intention to back it with glass. That's also what I intend to do. In the past, I have backed a few of Fiona's patterns with glass and they look great. I'm attaching a photo of one of them:

  50. Hey Dan, Dremel makes a plunge router attachment. You could probably use it to drill holes. It should be pretty stable. I'm willing to bet someone here uses one.
