In this day of consolidations, our church was joined by another in our area and we selected a new patron, St. Maximilian Kolbe. I decided to create a portrait for our church. Combining the techniques of scroll sawing, portrait design, carved fretwork, and oil staining, this project was completed. It was dedicated and blessed and is now hanging in our church. Dick5 points

Made these this morning......Larger one is 5ft T......smaller one is 3ft T.......both I used rough cut lumber that i created from standard 1x6 boards.....white washed.....lg one has colonial red & hunter green letters.....sm one just colonial red letters..... The meaning of Noel......A term signifying the holiday season, Noël comes to us from the Latin verb nasci, meaning “to be born.” In the book of Ecclesiastes, the birth of Jesus is called natalis. A variation of this word, nael, made its way into Old French as a reference to the Christmas season and later into Middle English as nowel.5 points -

This is my solution! The Dremel drill press as is, because of it is only 3" from the bit to the post, is imparactical to use for drilling blade holes in almost any fretwork larger than 6" wide. However, I had the idea in my head I could do something to make it work and Home Depot near me had the Dremel Drill Press/Tool Station in stock for $45. I took a chance (knowing I could return it if I could not make it work) and bought it this morning. After I got it home and did some investigating how I could make it work the light bulb lit up in my brain and this was the result. There is a shelf above my workbench that was just the correct height to allow me to mount the base upside down. I slid the Drill press body on the post opposite of what is normal. The press can be rotated around the post allowing it to be swung out of the way if necessary. I use a piece of 1/4" ply as a drill backer and set the stop so the bit will not punch into the workbench top. Very easy to locate the bit ove the point where the hole is needed. From the bit to the wall is about 11" so as positioned it can accomodate panels up to about 22" wide. I have two Dremel Rotary Tools so this one will be a dedicated drill for drilling blade holes, although the tool holder body can be rotated up to 90 degrees and used for other operations. I don't think I will be braking as many drill bits with this setup. I located it near the rear corner of the workbench so it should not interfere tooooooo much with other workbench usage. As the say, where there is a will there is a way. And when space is at a premium, you have to think outside the box and make evey square inch count.5 points

Recognize these bespectacled eyes yet? I'll post the finished pic when I'm done. *** Finished***Most people got it right. Glad he was recognizable from his eyes and nose. I did the pattern, sort of. I've found if you take a good picture to a pencil drawing generator site it gets it pretty close. I play with it a little in Paint 3D and then decide some of what to cut as I go. I like how it worked out on this one anyway. The pattern I used wouldn't really be good enough to share but feel free to make a copy of my cutting and use it as a pattern if you'd like.4 points

Hi ya, after lurking in the background for a while and a couple of failed sign up attempts, I've finally managed to get on the site, I'm from Derbyshire UK, my wife brought me a scroll saw last Christmas and I got hooked, never made anything that didn't need a big hammer before and I'm like a small school boy shouting look what I made Mam, with every piece I make, I hope to learn from you all, and refine my abilities to using a small tack hammer by doing so2 points

I just use the stock bags... I bought a pack of 6 of them.. fill them up and then take the full bags to my brothers saw mill and pour them into his big sawdust pile.. he sells it to landscapers, and farms etc.. I just empty and reuse the 7 bags.. eventually the bags get a rip or snag and I have put tape on them but.. probably about time to buy some more... I've thought about getting the barrel and the dust deputy type top for it to help keep from going through those bags.. but since I just run the bags to the mill and empty them out.. I didn't really see any point in doing that.. Then I'd need 6-7 barrels, LOL I've thought about putting the bags online like FB Marketplace and sell the sawdust.. lots of people with small pets Hamsters and the like use sawdust for the bedding.. They could bring their own container or buy the bag for different price points... Probably more hassle than it'd be worth.. since my brothers mill is just 6 miles up the road.. Going to the mill always means I get to bring home a truck load of lumber cutoffs etc.. I have a hard time saying no.. and stocked on lumber for several years now.. Now.. if he only had BBply, LOL2 points -

Well not really,,,, stupid got me! I ruined my last Fiona cutting that I posted last week... Decided I wanted to round over the outside edge and a little bit of inattention and the router ate it for me..... Oh well, got the pattern all mounted on another piece of wood and will give it another go... If I let my mistakes discourage me,,, I would not do anything...1 point

Thank you Frank. I originally I thought about paint but quickly realized that wasn’t a good idea since I can’t paint a wall in the house without getting paint on everything in the room. Paper was safer for me.1 point -
This is not exactly scrolling so I didn't put in the bragging section. Things are a little slow so I just decided to post something. After scrolling for an hour or so both my eyes and butt get tired. I take a break and read a book on my cell phone. This is made from scraps and glued together with Titebone "Quick and Thick" adhesive. I think that's the name of the stuff. I may shoot it with a spray can of paint. Not meant to be pretty, just functional. The pegs, I'll round the tops.1 point

Do you change the filter every time or do you tap it outside and knock off some of the dust? I got basically the same one.. I take it outside almost every day and tap the filter on my propane tank (wearing a mask of coarse ) and there is a lot of dust blowing through the air.. falling onto the ground etc... I'd have to replace the filter 3 times a week if I was just to replace it when it's not white anymore, LOL.. I believe I read to tap it out right in the manual.. but when it changes color to the point that even after tapping it out then you need a new filter.. Well mines been that way several times now.. I then take a air hose from my compressor and blow it out.. Of coarse you need to do it from the inside toward the outside.. makes it like new again.. The filter material is getting ragged looking and I'm thinking I need to order a new one.. I'm talking about the prefilter by the way.. the cloth filter inside the body of the machine still white and looks as though it's new.. I may take it out and use the air hose just to see how much it has actually caught.. Mine is the Grizzly version but has the exact same style and control panel etc.. Pretty sure it is the same one with different badging.. Got mine on sale about 4-5 years ago.. but took me a year or more to finally put it up.. It catches a lot.. That said.. on a budget.. a box fan running with a filter does a lot too and much cheaper, LOL.. I run both and clean both filters at least a couple times a week.. Mostly from my sanders.. if I put together several projects to cut and don't run the sander.. I have very little dust on the filters... My new sander isn't nearly as good as my old one for collecting the dust in the dust canister it has.. hoping to get some sort of vac hooked up to my sander..1 point -

Dust Collection Question
OzarkSawdust reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
My piping is a disaster! I keep meaning to redo it, but I just don't get the time anymore. IMO - run the 6" out the port as far as you can. I run a sewer piper out of my HF 2hp unit along the ceiling. When it reaches the first drop, I drop to 2" with a gate. I need to run another hose line soon as I added a few tool carts since my first run. I'll probably swap out the sewer duct for PVC pipe and go that route for the whole run Can't wait to see what you do!1 point -

I'd kill for a shop that size LOL The Wen 3410 is the first machine I turn on everyday, after the lights of course. It's very quiet and can barely tell it's running. Does it work? Well, I've only changed the filter once since I bought it in February. It was definitely a different color LOL. But in all honesty I don't really know how well it's working since I don't have anything to compare it to. But since the filter wasn't white when I changed it, I'd say yeah it works well.1 point -

Yeah, some guy brought in several walnut logs to be custom sawn.. paid up front.. 15 years ago.. never picked it up.. my brother tried contacting the guy for a few years and couldn't get through.. a lot of it was rotted.. He gave it to me if I wanted to sort through and clean up the mess.. I ended up with about 200 bdft but it took a couple weeks work to sort and clean up the mess.. Got a whole lot of spalted maple and a little bit of birdseye maple.. cherry.. I actually hate to turn it away but I hate taking it too.. as it's green rough cut.. needs stickered and dried.. I've taken enough last couple years and am now just digging into some of it now that its been drying for a couple years..1 point -
You answered your own question there Kevin. You said "it's just another 20 feet". That would mean she would have to go 40 feet extra and she ain't getting paid to do that.1 point

Bob, this piece was approximately 24" tall x 18" wide. This was the first time I had done a human as most of my work involves wildlife subjects. I had to spend time searching historical records for a proper photograph which is somewhat limited and I wanted to create a portrait of a younger man rather than an older one. The entire project took about one month to complete. This was the first time I had drawn a scroll saw portrait pattern also. Dick1 point

Nicely cut! I'm convinced, and have seen nothing to change my opinion, that the English language (and American English in particular) is not so much a language as it is the bastardized result of a drunken non-consensual pileup consisting of at least seven different languages, with a few dead languages thrown in for science.1 point -

Dust Collection Question
OzarkSawdust reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
Dave, from what I have heard and/or read, you want to leave the feed/suction line as large as it is at the vac and neck it down as close to the pick up point as possible and try to keep the piping as large as you can. You want air flow volume so necking down too much destroys the suction. 6" down to 4" should work fine. But taking it down smaller might be detrimental to flow volume.1 point -

How do you like the WEN 3410? I saw those and was thinking (dangerous) if it sucks air/dust in the filter end, and blows clean air out the grill. I could hang it in the middle of the shop and point it towards the end and it would circulate air around the shop as well as clean it. Shop photo almost two yrs ago right after it was spray foamed, NOT that clean any more LOL. But you can see the 9ft walls and high ceiling of the metal building. A little circulation of the warm air that rises to the top would really feel good this winter!1 point -

The closet place for me is about an hour away for any type of decent wood. If I want scrolling wood that isn't run of the mill like Zebra wood, I use Ocooch Hard woods as they are the closets to the east coast. Prices are not that bad and it is quality wood.1 point
