    A Wolfs head.

My latest project. A wolfs head. My best work so far. I have been making puzzles and firewood. Firewood is my learning curve, not Worth keeping. I now have a good understanding of blades and techniques. Also made the frame.

  4. This finished portrait was 19" x 13" completed on a beautiful piece of nicely figured elm. Note that the two sides of the face and neck were treated in different ways. The spots on the left side of the giraffe's face were finished using standard fretwork techniques with a satin black backer board and the spots on the right side were carved, textured, and darkened with burnt umber staining. These choices were made simply for their artistic variation. There are nine sub-species of giraffes and each has a unique coat pattern with variations in the color of the spots among the different species.

  6. Big thank you to Don In Brooklin for his excellent pattern, another order done and most important a satisfied customer. The font that Don used made it possible to either stand or hang the pattern.

    Painted ornaments

I don't normally paint ornaments because I am useless at painting but I did these four for fun. 2 rabbits, a kitten & the Grinch. Marg

  9. This piece was done for my granddaughter's room after the decor in her bedroom was changed following a family trip to that famous place in Orlando. It is a layered format with each layer finished before assembly. The finished castle protrudes about 3 1/2 inches from the painted background. Yes, this is a deviation from my usual style.

  10. Just braggin' about my view today. LOL First of 3 holiday events in a row. Week 1 was solid. Week 2 at the same place next Saturday. Week 3 just up the road and then done for the year. Fortunate to have had my local markets this year while all of my big events were cancelled.

  11. Dave, from what I have heard and/or read, you want to leave the feed/suction line as large as it is at the vac and neck it down as close to the pick up point as possible and try to keep the piping as large as you can. You want air flow volume so necking down too much destroys the suction. 6" down to 4" should work fine. But taking it down smaller might be detrimental to flow volume.

    ST. MAX PORTRAIT

In this day of consolidations, our church was joined by another in our area and we selected a new patron, St. Maximilian Kolbe. I decided to create a portrait for our church. Combining the techniques of scroll sawing, portrait design, carved fretwork, and oil staining, this project was completed. It was dedicated and blessed and is now hanging in our church. Dick

  14. Okay, okay, I'm a sucker for gears. Especially gears that do something. I'm a big fan of steampunk/dieselpunk but really dislike how some folks just glue random gears all over things and call it steampunk. They need to be FUNCTIONAL!!! Or at least appear functional. This pattern came in one of Steve Good's daily newsletters the other day, and I had to bump it to the top of my to-be-cut pile. Note: read the instructions several times before drilling pilot holes. Silly me missed the part where the front spinny-piece was to be stack cut. That's a LOT of pilot holes to re-drill, even if the original holes made it easier. Yep, this one was fun to cut. Gears and frame are 1/2" whiteboard, chunks left over from another project. 1/4" ply for the front piece. Stains are Minwax, "Honey" and "Natural" for the dark and the light (respectively), and some teal rattlecan spray for the backer, left over from another project for my wife. Gives it a pop of color.

  15. Cut a stack of 5 of these today.. customer seen the puzzle ( Harvey Bylers Pattern from Scott @ woodcraftbyscott.com ) and asked if I could make this design but as a ornament instead of a puzzle.. I resized it and cut it from 1/8" BBply..

    Butterfly

I thought I would try something different. I cut this and it looked like it needed color. So I decided to try cutting colored paper and gluing it to the back out the top layer. Then glue it to the backer and coat with spray polyurethane. I think it turned out pretty well. I thought I would share

    Boxes

I am taking a pyrography class and have been making these boxes (with permission of the guy that makes the high-end version of the boxes and is my pyrography-teacher [Copper Pig Woodworking])on my scroll saw. Walnut, sapwood, embellished with pyrography.

  20. Following a fantastic vacation at this beautiful national park in Montana, I decided to create a scrollsaw piece of the animals we had encountered during this visit. Interestingly, the frame was constructed first from spalted white oak and then the animals were completed.

    Ornaments For Charity

    9,998 downloads

Ornaments For Charity is a project from the members of Scroll Saw Village. For the last 13 years, our designers have donated their talents by creating wonderful ornament patterns for the Holiday Season. It has become so popular, and so big, we had to split it into 2 books! Book 1 covers our first 10 years; 2010-2021. Our newest book, Book 2, covers 2021-2023. Between the two books, we have 171 pages with 525 Holiday ornament patterns! So be sure to download both books! This popular eBook was featured in the Holiday 2014 issue of Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts (read the article here). Is it really free? Here's how it works. Download the eBook and take a look at what we have to offer. If you decide to keep it, all we ask is that you donate to your favorite charity. You get a ton of great ornament patterns, and you help those in need in return. Remember, this isn't about "buying" an eBook of patterns, it's about giving to a worthy cause. If you don't have a favorite charity, we have listed a number of national (and international) charities below that could use your help. Remember, the purpose is to raise money for those in need. So, please dig deep when donating. Please donate to one of these fine charities or a charity of your choice. Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which donates toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. By giving to Toys for Tots, you'll bring the magic of Christmas to children in need. The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a non-profit organization that grants wishes to children (2.5 years to 18 years old) who have life-threatening medical conditions. It is a wonderful charity that brings a few moments of joy. Habitat For Humanity is an international, non-governmental, non-profit organization devoted to building simple, decent, and affordable housing for those who would not otherwise be able to afford their own home. A donation to your local food bank will ensure that the hungry will be fed in your own community. Make a difference in your neighbor's life.

  22. After my craft show, I received numerous orders that I just finished. Now I can start other projects that I have to do for Christmas, also I have to get my kitchen ready for new cupboards and counters in the new year. We will have been without kitchen counters and cupboards for approximately 8 months. Our old kitchen sold 2 days after we posted it and all the cabinets maker are way behind on their orders. I thought retirement was supposed to be relax and enjoy, I think I work more now than when I had a job (IT manager) LOL PS these critters with mask from Sue Mey were my best sellers I cut more than 100 of them

    Good Enough ?

I finally finished this piece for my Son in Law as a gift. Tony helped with the frame. Now I'm having doubts, I see so many flaws. An honest opinion please,, would you be happy to receive this ? Edited to add that this pattern was created by @grampa and found in the library.

  24. I finally got to use my Pegas saw. I used a pattern from Bagetta and cut it in 1/2" cherry. I used a Pegas #1 blade. It will be a gift for my neighbor who was kind enough to get me some ice for my knee shortly after it was replaced.

    Another Fret Box

Found another pattern I wanted to try out. Problem was that there was a top and front/back side pattern but no sides. I did some finagling on the computer and shrunk the front pattern to match the side dimension. Its 1/4" oak with shellac and lacquer finish. Box is 7 x 6" and 3" high.

  26. Recognize these bespectacled eyes yet? I'll post the finished pic when I'm done. *** Finished***Most people got it right. Glad he was recognizable from his eyes and nose. I did the pattern, sort of. I've found if you take a good picture to a pencil drawing generator site it gets it pretty close. I play with it a little in Paint 3D and then decide some of what to cut as I go. I like how it worked out on this one anyway. The pattern I used wouldn't really be good enough to share but feel free to make a copy of my cutting and use it as a pattern if you'd like.

  27. Made these this morning......Larger one is 5ft T......smaller one is 3ft T.......both I used rough cut lumber that i created from standard 1x6 boards.....white washed.....lg one has colonial red & hunter green letters.....sm one just colonial red letters..... The meaning of Noel......A term signifying the holiday season, Noël comes to us from the Latin verb nasci, meaning “to be born.” In the book of Ecclesiastes, the birth of Jesus is called natalis. A variation of this word, nael, made its way into Old French as a reference to the Christmas season and later into Middle English as nowel.

  32. Thanks for your comments. It tickles me because for all the time I have been scrolling, I was frustrated by the attitude of many "artists" running art shows. They always felt that scrollsawing was a craft and NOT art. A few pieces of different colored fabric stapled to a board, now that was art. I definitely agree with you that seeing woodwork in person is definitely superior to photos which don't do justice to grain patterns on these beautiful woods. Perhaps, another gallery showing in the future???

  33. One of the people I work with needed a display case for a miniature flag in a veteran's shadow box. I made this from 3/8" square poplar with only glue joints. He is making a backer and cover for it. Still have a touch of sanding to do, but it came out better than I first thought. Tried a puzzle blade, but just could not hold the angles tight enough, so I went to a hobby size miter box. And yes, the photo is rotated 90 degrees in the phone.

    Hegner Mod

Bill, I just drilled and tapped a hole for a 3/8" bolt. 3/8" was the size that leather stop fit on. I drilled the hole about 1/1/4" below the existing stop... Does not have to be exact, You will need a little shorter spring. I found one at ACE Hardware .. I see @Rockytimeis asking a good question... I am not sure of the answer. My guess is that in case of a blade breaking that arm would fly up fast and high... May damage something, I don't know.

After cutting the boss off both my Hegners I did not replace it with a bolt. The arm just raises so far and stops. No bolt needed.

    OSPREY

A few years ago. a local organization of bird watchers wanted to introduce some Ospreys into a lake in our area. They built a high tower and the start of a nest on a platform on the top. The lake contained an ample supply of fish and a pair of these birds were introduced. The whole procedure was successful, the birds had an offspring and returned the following years to continue the process. I did this project to commemorate this success. I also made the textured frame. Dick
