Back around 2009 ish I got talked into going with all the ladies to the outlet malls.. and to my surprise they had a tool store.. I happen to be researching planers and had my heart set on a dewalt.. but then I seen the refurbished ryobi 13" planer there for $100 you bet ya.. I snagged it up since it was going to be some time before I would have enough money saved up for the DeWalt.. I figured if I could get a couple months out of it I'd be saving money from buying all those thin boards that I used to use.. Funny thing is... aside from the scroll saw it is the most used tool in my shop.. every single project I've made started with the board going through the planer.. even if it's at the right thickness if nothing else I run it to be sure it's flat and not cupped.. I'd like to have a new nicer one but this one is still running and doing a great job at it too.. That said, I'd like one with the spiral helical head.. Not sure what brand I'd get but I've heard a lot of good with those.. I think most folks are going to recommend the DeWalt.. They nice units.. If I couldn't afford one with the spiral cutter head I'd probably go for the bigger dewalt one with the 2 speed settings, and the extended infeed and outfeed tables.. But the ryobi is still kicking butt so I'm going to run it until it runs no more, LOL Don't believe Ryobi even offers a planer anymore.. When shopping be sure to check out the cost of replacement blades.. some of them get pretty pricey As for the Jointer.. I have a small 6" benchtop by Delta.. Been another one I use a lot.. I bought it at a garage sale for $25 basically new ( open box).. but it was a variable speed model and the VS circut board went out.. Obsolete part through Delta but Porter Cable is basically the same machine.. though I wasn't paying over $120 for the part with a new porter cable wasn't much more.. LOL.. That said I ended up wiring the motor direct and bypassed the VS.. I never used that VS anyway, LOL.. so I'm still using that one too..3 points

Christmas Card 2020
barb.j.enders and one other reacted to Scrappile for a topic
My wife and I do not send out many Christmas Cards and the only ones we do are some relatives that we don't get to see. A couple years ago. I decided to make something Christmasy for the locals that we usually have Christmas Dinner with. Well I guess no Christmas dinner this year, but I still made a little something as our Christmas card to them. They will get one of these this year... It is a Steve Good pattern. It's about 8" tall. Come apart for easy storage or so it won't take up much room in their garbage...2 points -
Yep Jim, if I lived closer, could sell my Seyco and had a little extra cash... I would be looking hard at that. That is half price of the saw without the stand, quick clamp, not a bad price. I'd love to have two Hegners..2 points

I think that will get the job done! you may need to anchor yourself to the floor. Regarding the canister filters vs bag the bad stuff is the fine stuff! so if you are going to the trouble putting in a centralized system, in my opinion, a canister filter is a must.2 points

Jointer and Planer
OzarkSawdust and one other reacted to don in brooklin on for a topic
The little square carbide cutters are called Helical cutters. I have an old Delta planner that serves me well. I do not have jointer and used the one at our club but with club closed due to covid I have been looking closely at a bench top jointer. I don't do real long boards so this would be fine. There seems to be different type of cutters some 4 sided and some 2 sided. I also want to get at least an 8 inch. I have been looking at the Richon but the 8 inch jointer is not available in Canada yet. They have a 5 year warranty. If I had he money I would buy the 10 inch combination helical planner/jointer.2 points -
Gary, I have the DeWALT 735 bench top planer and absolutely love it. I also have a Delta 6” open stand jointer. It’s about twenty years old. The only problem I have had with it is a broken plastic handle that adjusts the fence. Other than that, it has been a dependable work horse.2 points

Thank you. I have never seen a pattern for these. I draw my own. There is a free program online called polydraw. After I draw one I take it to Office Depot and they will enlarge it to 15 inches and print them on the plotter.2 points -
I have quite a bit of equipment and I have been moving a shop vac with a cyclone bucket around and it is a major pain so I am anxious to get it all set up.2 points

Curved name for over the door
amazingkevin and one other reacted to courtym74 for a topic
Sorry Frank I always forget that stuff. It's residential, to go over her daughter's bedroom door. 20 inches wide 8 high. 1/2 in birch ply for the whole thing. Red mahogany stain on the background. Font for the letters is "Script MT Bold" from Word. As for the look pretties I just searched for a vine pattern and found one on a free site. All cut with #7 reverse tooth Olsen blade2 points -

I have a small Brother B&W laser printer. Is it possible to replace the black toner cartridge with a red one? It is a DCP-L2550DW. I want to use a red toner cartridge to print patterns. Wondering if the cartridges are interchangeable.1 point

I'm not an expert but I use a HF router speed control on most of my equipment that is powered by a motor that uses brushes. Just a suggestion.1 point

Jointer and Planer
OCtoolguy reacted to OzarkSawdust for a topic
I don't plan on using reclaimed wood... but you never know what lame brain idea you might get... LOL. But I do have a couple of metal detectors, A large high dollar one, and a wand type you also use in treasure hunting. Both will pick up most any metal. I have a habit of looking my wood over when I get it home and removing any staples/tags. I plan to get two separate machines and follow this type of sequence: (9) Preparing Project Lumber with a Jointer and Planer -- WOOD Magazine - YouTube It seems logical and simple to follow. I know I have several pieces of nice wood that are cupped or bowed a little and this should make things right. I've tried wetting it and spacing it with dowel rods to get air on all sides drying... didn't work well. Neither did putting weight on the top.1 point -
The biggest issue I had with nicked blades was "Staples" stores put tags etc on the boards with the price or type of wood so workers that have no clue what type of wood is from another type.. after several blade I now have learned to search the whole board for staples.. They usually are on the ends... BUT... one time there was one on the side of the board so I just inspect the edges real well before running a board through. When I first got my planer I was thinking about how much money I could save on pallet wood and other reclaimed wood.. but quickly learned how much more money they cost.. Dust, dirt, grit, etc.. will dull blades real fast.. how you use the thing and types of wood you run through will vary from one person to another.. My planer has little notches where the knife goes and there is not really much to adjust.. and I have no experience in adjusting them.. or maybe I just been lucky and get them in right every time, LOL1 point

Why not just change the color on the pattern? BTW There is not a red toner cartridge.1 point

It is something I used to do many years ago with B&W Photocopiers. Could get a blue or red cartridge to replace the black. Don't know about now, sorry.1 point

I have done shows that the rain didn't hurt anything and others where is was totally dead. I o have a waterproof tent and sides for it. As for the people showing up, it seems to depend on where the venue is. Remember, where there is rain there is wind. Make sure you tie your tent down securely on all 4 corners.1 point -
Wow, ordered it Thanksgiving day and it arrived today... 5 days ahead of when it said it would arrive. Well, it's just gonna sit until I wear out my current one which is a year old. Normally I wear them out every 15 months or so, but since I only did half the sales of usual this year due to Covid, maybe this one will last a little longer.1 point

Which Jet did you order? I have a Jet Vortex with the pleated filter I ran 4" PVC ducts. I have the unit in a different part of the basement than the majority of my shop to reduce the noise impact upstairs. The end of the furthest run is ~30 ft. and that has a reducer to 2" for my Router table and I still have plenty of airflow. The critical fine dust generators like my pneumatic drum sander (intarsia) all have 4" drops. I use a handheld remote. I did not glue any of the joints because I am not sure if my layout is permanent as it is now. If need be I use the metallic AC duct tape not the other crap that always leaves a residue. My ceilings are low so the gates are easy to reach. The pdf file is a rough layout of my current setup. My table saw, drill press, Supermax drum sander and a small metal lathe are in the same room as my DC they are not in the drawing. basement workshop-Model r2.pdf1 point

AFRICAN GIRAFFE PORTRAIT
amazingkevin reacted to DickMira for a topic
This finished portrait was 19" x 13" completed on a beautiful piece of nicely figured elm. Note that the two sides of the face and neck were treated in different ways. The spots on the left side of the giraffe's face were finished using standard fretwork techniques with a satin black backer board and the spots on the right side were carved, textured, and darkened with burnt umber staining. These choices were made simply for their artistic variation. There are nine sub-species of giraffes and each has a unique coat pattern with variations in the color of the spots among the different species.1 point -

Great looking project Dan. I love that saying, However, If true, I have had an Angel or Angels hanging around for a couple years now. One shows up almost every morning banging his beak on my bathroom window. Other times, later in the day he is at other windows.he’s been around for so long most of the time I barely register it any,ore.1 point -

Lots of great work done in only one morning. It would take me a few days just to cut all the words and the image nevermind painting the cuttings and gluing the assembly as well as building and stainimg the frame. Paint and glue dry time would eat up most of my morning. The rhyme is very tasteful.1 point -

These are from the The Great All-American Wooden Toy Book by Norman Marshall published in 1986. I was also published in "Great Book of Wooden Toys" It's all old school as in you will need to make/enlarge patterns by hand. Some of the plans were also published in the Shopsmith Hands-On magazine. That is where I first encountered them. I need to make some more of these. I have a box of parts that I haven't used.1 point
