This is a H. Botas pattern that I slightly modified to suit a 11X14 panel. The cut panel is 1/8" BB Plywood, left natural, affixed to a 1/4" Mahogny solid core plywood backer that was darkened with Minwax Mahogny stain to improve contrast. Cutting was done with Pegas #0 and #1 spiral Blades. The finished panel was finished with Clear Gloss Spray Lacquer. The panel is set loose in a simple custom made poplar frame that was also stained with the same Minwax Mahogny stain and protected with Clear Gloss spray Polyurethane.

I thought I would try something different. I cut this and it looked like it needed color. So I decided to try cutting colored paper and gluing it to the back out the top layer. Then glue it to the backer and coat with spray polyurethane. I think it turned out pretty well. I thought I would share

  5. Thanks, @jerry1939 for the Santa Ornament pattern. My wife chose this pattern for about 12 co-workers for whom I cut a new ornament every year. God Bless! Spirithorse

  6. This piece was started on a white oak board, 23" x 15" x 1" thick, routed on all sides with a frame molding bit to cut an incorporated frame. Scrollsawing and then power carving with a Foredom rotary power tool was completed. Sanding was done, light selective staining and multiple coats of Wipe-on-Poly were applied. A backer with black satin paint was attached.

  7. No, I'm not doing the alphabet. These are for Amos and Bella. The next ones will be for Ryder and Saige so I'll be keeping the alphabetical order theme going. Made with 1 1/2" Red Oak. Pattern is on Steve's page, Scroll Saw Workshop.

Must admit I tried this pattern when my saw was out of action, but seeing yours I think I may have to try it on my saw. I did this one with my router but it pales into insignificance compared to a 'good' cut piece..

Thanks for the comments. So JFYI: Unlike Pine and most other wood, Poplar takes almost any color stain verey well because the grain is very uniform and has very little pitch/sap. It also paints up well also. I'm getting to a point that I do not like using regular straight cutting blades. A lot of portrait work lends itself to the use of Spiral blades and cutting time is significantly reduced using them. A lot of practice is the key. For longer straight or curved cuts it is definately dificult to get a smooth cut with a spiral blade, but I have found if I tend to err on the waste side of the line, I can clean the cut up using a shaving action that is possible with a spiral blade. I actually find this technique is often more forgiving than when using a straight cutting blade for similar cuts.

  10. Recognize these bespectacled eyes yet? I'll post the finished pic when I'm done. *** Finished***Most people got it right. Glad he was recognizable from his eyes and nose. I did the pattern, sort of. I've found if you take a good picture to a pencil drawing generator site it gets it pretty close. I play with it a little in Paint 3D and then decide some of what to cut as I go. I like how it worked out on this one anyway. The pattern I used wouldn't really be good enough to share but feel free to make a copy of my cutting and use it as a pattern if you'd like.

    Brother Laser Printer

A quick search for magenta (red) toner for brother's printers. I'm not sure if it is compatible but may be worth a try. Some cartridges have a code on them and if you install a magenta cartridge where a black one should go you could get an error. That's why I suggest just replacing the color of the toner in the black cartridge. Even if there is a little black still in the cartridge, just add the red, give it a shake and you should see mostly red.

Benny, don't you have an Excalibur and a Hawk? Like Dan said, it's more a beginner saw. If you're just wanting another saw I'd go with the Dewalt.

    CA adhesive question

I would use wood glue. It only takes a tiny drop or two to hold th small pieces, it allows more time to reposition as needed, and you should be able to do it with no glue squeeze-out. CA can cure very quick and you won't be able to reposition pieces. As for the accelerant, it's mostly acetone and will evaporate very quickly.

Great looking project Frank! I love the Mahogany backer. I’ve cut many portraits with a natural wood backer. To me, it looks more natural than a painted backer.

Looks like someone got that one. But here is another one. This one is $500, located in southern Virginia. Still more than a day trip for me. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hegner-18in-Variable-Speed-Scroll-Saw/303790415857?hash=item46bb51dff1:g:1IoAAOSwOERfxZK4

    FLORIDA GATOR

Hello Gary: Thanks for the super comments. I think this gator went on a summer vacation to Black Bayou. He heard that those Florida folks were planning something. Unfortunately, i do not remember where the pattern came from. I make most of my frames and this molding came from one of the big box stores. Appreciate your interest in my work. Dick

Awesome job Frank!! Nice choice of woods, and I really like the way you brought out the contrast. Poplar frame stained Mahogany...very nice, I'll have to try that combination. You did the whole thing with those evil spirals! Wow, I can never get the smooth lines with spirals...great job.

    Another Fret Box

Found another pattern I wanted to try out. Problem was that there was a top and front/back side pattern but no sides. I did some finagling on the computer and shrunk the front pattern to match the side dimension. Its 1/4" oak with shellac and lacquer finish. Box is 7 x 6" and 3" high.

    Boxes

I am taking a pyrography class and have been making these boxes (with permission of the guy that makes the high-end version of the boxes and is my pyrography-teacher [Copper Pig Woodworking])on my scroll saw. Walnut, sapwood, embellished with pyrography.

    AMELIA'S CASTLE

This piece was done for my granddaughter's room after the decor in her bedroom was changed following a family trip to that famous place in Orlando. It is a layered format with each layer finished before assembly. The finished castle protrudes about 3 1/2 inches from the painted background. Yes, this is a deviation from my usual style.

    Skill scroll saw

The skill saw is basically the same 16” saw everybody else sells, different colors and labels. Wen, skill, Dremel and so on. It uses adapters to mount pin-less blades. It has a vacuum port to hook up a shop vac, but that gets in the way when trying the attach the lower blade clamp. I would only recommend these saws to beginners just learning to scroll.
