    BIRDS OF PREY

This project represents some of America's finest avian wildlife. It was cut and carved from a large piece, 21" x 17", of chestnut. Minimal staining was used.

    Duke the Alsation

Just finished a couple of things for a friend, they have a gorgeous German shepard called Duke so I took a photo of it and made a key holder and a doggie dream catcher for them, it's the first time av had to glue bits in separately, I cut the head out then glued it back in to give it a 1mm outline

    Christmas presents

Have been working on Christmas presents, and thought I would show a few here. The following are tissue boxes, in ash and cherry. Finished with spray shellac. Mostly my own design (don't remember where I got the pattern, memory ain't too good anymore). These go to family members. This is an Alex Fox pattern, one in ash, the other two in cherry. Finished with spray shellac. These go to in-laws. This pattern is from Fine Scrollsaw, sized to use 3/8" ash. Finish is spray shellac. These go to family. The next two are Steve Good patterns, using mdf and spray paint. The gold cross goes to my Granddaughter and her husband. the other goes to my mother-in-law.

    My First Work

I got a scroll saw to help my wife with a project. It is a used Harbor Freight model, but it works pretty well. I have done some practice. Right now it is in the garage, which is quite cold, so I am not doing much. These are two of my current projects. I can't seem to get the letters for the unit patch nice enough, so my son has 3d printed me letters I will glue on. It is from my old regiment, the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. The puzzles are for my new grandson.

  8. Cut this one for my wife this past week. We celebrated our 17th anniversary on Sunday. 1/8" bbply, Minwax Honey/Natural stains. Took about 6-8 hours total, not counting the cold/rainy day that kept the stain from drying quickly. Note for the next time I do a Steve Good tab-n-slot box design: cut ON the line, not edged up to the line. Had to do a bit of filing on the slots, they fit tightly on the dry-run but there was a bit of swell after applying the stain.

  10. I cut a 2020 Christmas ornament tonight. A Bobby Riggs pattern cut in Cherry veneer ply with #1 Pegas blade. I haven't put a finish on it yet. Think I'll make more and send them to the family, to remember what a shitty year this has been. Let's hope next year is much better!

  13. It took some work, but here is my setup right now. I just measured and the saw table is 37-38 inches from the floor. I find when I work for more than a little while my back gets stiff. Is there a recommended height for the saw? I am about 5 foot 9 (or was ) so, is there a guideline you guys use? I have a magnifying light and a foot pedal added to it and put a hose on the blower, which has helped a great deal. Thank you for any advice!

    Saw height setup

Looking at the pic, I think your problem is not the height of the saw but the fact that you are probably sitting or standing toooooo far awy from the saw causing you to bend over way too much. I would consider redoing the mounting board with a cantelever to allow the saw to move out maybe 4 to 6 inches and you find an ajdustable stool that allows you to sit at the saw comfortably. You might also want to consider rasiing the back of the saw an inch to two making looking down onto the work a little easier with less back/neck bend. Wether you sit or stand, I find your arms (from the wrists to the elbow) should be fairly horizontal and be level with , or slightly above, the level of the saw table.

  18. I use a pin nailer for all of my stack cutting with rare exception. I use 5/8 inch pins. in the waste areas. For ornaments I have the four corners as waste. I don't do portraits but I do delicate fretwork scenes with the wood cut to size like what you do frank. There are always a few waste areas that are big enough for a pin throughout the designs. Any large project needs more than just the edges or corners held tightly together. I cut those pieces out last and maybe tape the edges before cutting the last two. I never use double sided tape, too risky prying delicate layers apart.

  19. I have Porter Cable set with compressor and nailers and use my 18 gauge 5/8 pins for stack cutting. works well bought it at least 20 plus years ago. There is a 23 gauge pin nailer at the local hardware for around 50 bucks that considered but for 50 bucks I can buy 2 sheets 5X5 of 1/8 BB.

    Beach scene

I posted about this in the "Works in Progress" folder last week. I found some cool looking wood at Lowe's, 3/4" tongue and groove Pine that already has a blueish stain applied to it. I bought a few pieces and played around with them until I got this. Here is a pic with some blue LED's behind it. It looks much better in person than in the pic. I have already sold two more of these. I think they are pretty neat looking,, no two look alike. The below pic is one of the ones that is sold, with and without the lights on. Another one that I have cut out has 2 Palm trees on it that looks pretty neat too.

    Bench Table Saw ?

I don't want to come off as bashing benchtop saws, but to me, putting a 52" Biesmeyer fence on a table top saw is a little like putting lipstick on a pig. The fence is probably worth more than the saw. That said, I have heard of similar configurations, only a cabinet saw instead of a benchtop. It looks cool and very sophisticated, but I never liked the idea of a router table tied in with my TS. Space restrictions may make it desirable for some. I don't have a big shop, but I don't think that set up would work very well for me. We all work differently, so to each his own.

  25. I have never used the gorilla glue sticks, but I do use regular Elmer's glue sticks to stick my patterns down. I gave up on spray glue many years ago, Minnesota winters plus needing to go outside to glue equals no fun!

    Saw height setup

Frank's suggestion of an adjustable stool or chair is the key. Adjusting the saw height is doing it backwards. Also do you have enough room for your knees?

    23 GA Pin Nailer

I use a pin nailer all the time. it's better than taping. if there is a large cut out place in the pattern a nail ther will be a big suport when cutting. It cuts like there is a single piece of wood. IKE

  30. Well done! Sorry for your loss even though time has passed. My mother died at only 49 years old, one sister died at only 39 years old, and my father passed at 79 years old 8 years ago. I know there are still times that we wish for just one more phone call or one more day. You have made an item to be treasured. God Bless! Spirithorse

  33. I buy whole sheet A4 sized shipping labels on EBay, usually boxes of 100. Can't remember the price but pretty cheap. But, here's the thing, I always sand the face of the plywood to 420 grit before applying it straight on to the wood. When it comes to removing, a QUICK wipe with Turps Substitute, leave for 2 minutes if needed and then peel. Job done. I have noticed that if the surface of the ply is NOT sanded and left as is from the maker, when peeling the paper it tends to lift slivers of the wood. I have attached a pic of the latest piece I made. It was designed, printed, stuck on the ply (after sanding) and cut, pattern removed and glued up all in one day. I was happy with that as at 80 + years old I don't get about the way I used to. It is made from 1/4" Birch Ply and about 200mm (8") in diameter. take care and stay safe Don W
