    Steve Good gnomes

My wife loves these little gnomes, so when Steve Good's newsletter came out with a pair, well....meet "Jack" (redhead) and "Frost" (graybeard). 1/4 bbply, Pegas #1mg blade, total of about 2 hours' cutting time, if that. Stains used are (all Minwax) red, blue, natural, weathered gray, honey, and gunstock (orange beard/'stache). If I make another set at any time, I'll probably just attach an eye-bolt to the top of the hat so they hang better, but overall, everybody's happy.

    Yet to be framed

I had a gorgeous pattern of a Robin done for me by @Helder Botas for which I am incredibly grateful. Fresh off the saw. Yet to have a finish applied and framed. It's a gift from my daughter to her Mother in Law. I've just sent her this picture, keep your fingers crossed that she likes it.

    Simple Nativity

Very simple Nativity scene but I love it. I think the one I copied was actually done on a bandsaw. I think the simplicity fits well with the event it depicts. Merry Christmas everyone!

    My First Work

I got a scroll saw to help my wife with a project. It is a used Harbor Freight model, but it works pretty well. I have done some practice. Right now it is in the garage, which is quite cold, so I am not doing much. These are two of my current projects. I can't seem to get the letters for the unit patch nice enough, so my son has 3d printed me letters I will glue on. It is from my old regiment, the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. The puzzles are for my new grandson.

  7. The reason you can’t remove the interior waste is your cut is angled rather than straight up and down. Check that the blade is at a perfect 90° to the table. If it is, you are applying lateral pressure on the blade when making your turns. You have to let the blade do the cutting. If you go off the line, pull back a little instead of trying to push the blade back to the line.

    Ornaments

Made a couple of ornaments today for a giveaway at church. I made them out of cedar and didn’t put a finish on them so they would keep the scent.

  10. I posted both of these before under Bragging Rights with long winded stories. Both of these were made for my Lady who loves Hummingbirds. I made the Hummingbird lamp a few weeks back and it was supposed to be a supprise for Christmas but, as things go, she got to see it and claimed it right there and then. So I managed to make the Hummingbird Jewelry box without her catching me, posted pics of it a few days ago, and then wrapped it and put it under the tree before she found it. Whew...took some doing. I have one more gift to make for Christmas at my daughters request and I'm cutting it thin (no pun intended) time wise. I ordered a special pattern from Scroller over a week ago and it has not arrived yet. If it shows up soon and I'm able to finish and ship in time for it to get to NY by Christmas I'll grab a quick pic and post it. Wish me luck. Edit: OOPs, I did forget to include a pic of the six Christmas Crosses (Stack cut) I made for neighbors and family members: Edit #2: In case anyone is interested, I did manage to make the Gift my daughter requested and shipped it to NY. The package is sitting in the FedEX facility near her (today 12/17), but deliveries are being held up by the snow stome in the NE. She will get it tommorow so still made iot in time for Christmas with a little time to spare. Edit #3: (12/22) Thought I would just add another gift I just made for my Lady. Look under Braging Rights "R" if for my Lady.

    CATAN

We are a Catan family and everyone owns the game. My son asked me to cut the board pieces on wood. So I used 1/8 Baltic birch plywood and photocopied the pieces and glued them on. Then my son son jokingly requested a box to put the pieces in. So my husband and I thought that it would be a good challenge for us. The box is made from 3/4”Wormy Maple with stained 1/4” Baltic birch top and bottom. The containers inside the box are 3/4” Western Cedar. The walls I designed on paper in a basket weave. The box measures 18 1/4” X 12 1/4” and 3 3/4” tall. With all the board pieces inside it weighs 11.6 lbs. We used a hole saw bit for the holes in the box and the rest was scrolled. We used Amber Shellac for the finish, which is why the wormy maple has an amber tint to it.

  13. I love Charles Dicken's, A Christmas Carol. Our family's favorite movie version is The Muppet Christmas Carol. I made one of these for each of my 3 kids. The wood is red oak. The stain is Barn Red from Minwax. Comes in handy around Christmas!

  15. My guess is you're pushing to hard on the blade which is making it not cut straight up / down.. If the saw was not square you should be able to push the center out on one of the sides ( ie if it doesn't push out the bottom try flipping it over and push it out the top it should push or even fall out but if you are bowing the blade by pushing too hard then it possibly just not going to come out either side).

    Warp Question

Made this sometime back an it had warped just a small amount, enough to see. I used eighth inch plywood for backer. Should I have used quarter inch instead? Or is the problem using the two different types of wood? Thanks

  18. I cut this a few years ago. If you want a taller piece I would suggest cutting it in two pieces and glue together, then sand the exterior and interior flush. The main body is 1" thick with the top is 1/8" and bottom is 1/4". I think this was my first attempt at a "box". I keep it by my chair and put earring in at the end of the day!. Should probably get around to finishing it properly!!

  21. Cut the stuck piece in half or thirds if necessary so it has room to fall out. I have had the same thing happen in a complicated piece of fretwork, so I jujst cut up in pieces until it falls out.

  22. Decided to make this for me. Took me two days to cut. Normally it would take a hour max, but with my eyes bothering me so much I can only scroll for a very short time. Now I just hope my niece doesn't snitch it. She's a huge BigFoot fan.

  23. Or if you have a bandsaw, that might be easier for the 'centre' piece.

  24. OK, I think you are correct. I will make another attempt. I am cutting through 1 3/4 inches of wood. I will put a new blade in a double check the squareness of the table to the blade. I appreciate all of your help. I could also cut thinner pieces and stack them, I guess.

    Saw Table Cover

An idea from Kevin long ago is what I did and it works perfect. I got a piece of counter top laminate from Menards and traced the table on the underside. I then cut it w my saw, then used spray glue to keep it on. You can wax it when needed and it lasts for a long time. The piece I had to buy was enough to make three in case I ever broke one. Use a fine blade to cut and slow down or you can crack it.

  41. Thank you, Marg Both my scrollsawing and woodcarving were started at the same time, around 2005, new hobbies in retirement. The scrollsaw was a gift from my children and the hand carving tools were a gift from my wife. A Dremel power carving tool quickly replaced the hand carving tools. I burned out three of the earliest models with all of the power carving especially because I preferred to work with hardwoods. These were replaced with Foredom equipment and the more powerful carving features. Dick

  42. unless you are running big planers and table saws 4 inch should be more than enough. how far of a run are you doing? rockler sells or did sell a pvc to dust collection hose adapter. i think they were about $6-8 or so. make sure you ground the PVC with a grounding wire kit to discharge static electric. how many CFM is your dust collector?

  43. Agreed - sounds like pushing too hard or the blade is not squared correctly. I run into this once in awhile when mounting a new blade and I have to re-orient the blade - it's a real PITA I would also go slowly - not sure what speed you're cutting with, but when I started I cut on #3. I'm now comfortable at 6.5 and 7 Hope that helps somewhat

    My First Work

They look Fantastic.Letters are hard to Master,I have been cutting for over 20yrs,still have some trouble with them, I cut with 1/4 wood, so that has something to do with it.But keep up the Fantastic work.

    My First Work

Letters use real slow speed and a nice fine blade and you will master it. The thinner the wood the harder letters are as it becomes easier to break them.

  49. Well done! Sorry for your loss even though time has passed. My mother died at only 49 years old, one sister died at only 39 years old, and my father passed at 79 years old 8 years ago. I know there are still times that we wish for just one more phone call or one more day. You have made an item to be treasured. God Bless! Spirithorse

  50. Guess you can say I'm a seasoned scroller , but you never know it all and I never claimed too . Been scrolling for over thirty years , I wore out a 16" variable speed Craftsman scroll saw after using it for a good 12 years and just wore out the jaws . I decided to buy a new Dewalt model 788 verses buying new jaws for my old Craftsman scroll saw . Glad I did , I know there's all different prices and brands / models out there . I love my Dewalt and I can tell starting out on the Craftsman brand was a cheap try in case I decided not to pursue the hobby . I can also offer that the scrollsaw blade I use is flying Dutchman blades they were made in Germany - can google to buy them online . I buy my blades in bulk in grosses - there cheaper that way .I Started out by making just the letters of the alphabet , remember to start out with three real important things is too practice practice practice . I make Christmas ornaments , , name plaques and custom plaques since I'm retired now . First two years I was retired I keep the scrollsaw hot , but since then I decided to get a part time job being a commercial delivery driver for O'Reilly's auto parts . But being a scroller is my passion in wood , I could go on and on - but maybe I've offfered a little aid to the new scrollers out there . My dad always wanted to woodwork but told me growing up he couldn't afford it , I did what he wanted too do . Loved my Daddy - bless his heart - thank you and go scroll some wood Trust me you'll find it too be more than just a hobby . MD
