1939 Graham-Paige Model 97 The Graham Brothers had started the Graham Paige Auto Company in 1927 after manufacturing and selling kits to modify Ford Model T’s. Even though they began shortly before the depression, the company was successful because of the car’s quality and their “Blue Streak” 8-cylinder engine and the introduction of a crankshaft driven super charger. Their innovative cars ran in many prestigious races including several French Gran-Prix’s and the won the Concours D'Elegance in Paris. By the late 30’s their original design had become somewhat dated and they hired a new design team to accentuate the current Art-Deco style of the era. The 1938 model was named the “Spirit of Motion” and the forward rake of the front grill and fenders gave the impression of forward movement even when standing still. Similar to the Ocean Liner ads of the period showing the upward view of the prow of the ship cutting through the waves. It became better known as the “Shark Nose” Model 97. In 1940, production ceased. During WWII the plant was involved in war production and eventually the company was purchased by Kaiser Auto and eventually the Nash/ AMC corp.6 points

I am so proud of this one, you have no idea. I made it for my daughter and her partner. A few years ago we all went to the US and we went to Vegas, best holiday ever. Anyway we had our Family Christmas on Sunday and they loved it. I made it so long ago I can't remember what the wood was but I think it was Rosewood and pine for the box. My lady's name is Robin, but she loves Hummingbirds...now ain't that a contradiction. I guess that is why she calls herself "Bird Brain". Steve Good included the "initialhummer.pdf" in a recent e-mail so you can guess I just had to make the "R" for Robin. I modified it litttle to make it into a framed piece rather than a Hanging ornament. Lots of holes - 12 to be exact - cut mostly with Pegas #1 mgt and #2/0 spiral. Perimeter cut done with #3 mgt. She hasn't seen it yet so it gets wrapped and put under the tree for Christmas morning, Cut is 5/32" Maple solid core ply approx 9" x 8" with a Walnut Solid Core Ply backer darkened with Minwax Walnut stain. Added a 12' x 10" mat with a third pice of BB ply Panel finished with multiple coats of spray gloss Lacquer. The custom frame is Poplar with a routed decorative inside edge stained with Minwax Eexpresso and finished with Wipe On Poly.4 points

Our Pattermakers! I have had a dozen or more patterns made for me in the short 2 or 3 years that I have been coming to the Village and have seen several hundred or maybe even thousands more made for other Scrollers. I want to thank everyone that has made me a pattern and everyone else that took time out of their day to make patterns for others. Very much appreciated. By the way, I still have a few patterns that have been made for me that I haven't gotten around to cutting out yet... too many ideas, not enough time! Thanks, Barry4 points

Drill bits

I bought some bargain drill bits from Sears once.... First bit I use, to drill a hole in pine,,, it just folded over into an "L" shape.... Like they were made of soft lead.. I just threw all of them in the trash can... Nothing really to do with your post, but just thought I will tell my little story...4 points -

Care taking for a 93 year old amputee .. and .. a dimentia'ed 90 year old wife of his (wife's parents) .. man .. that is FULL TIME !!! I didn't realize it. I even took my scroll saw over there when we moved in back in February .. Cut out a manger scene .. and .. that was all I had time for. But .. got this one done this week for my Grand daughter for Christmas. It's cut out of an old SOLID MAPLE HEADBOARD .. with .. that BURL WALNUT I get for a base. Used a Pegas 2/0 MGT and a Flying Dutchman 2/0 - then - finished it off with a #1 FD .. Thanks the the CLOCK Kevin! (@kmmcrafts) and both you and TDP(@TDpainter) for your advise on the pattern I was drawing for it. I think it came out alright. And .. there's the pattern if anyone wants it. It was a FUN cut.3 points

Oh how I long for the days when you could buy drill bits that were made in the good ole USA and were a high quality product. Now most of the ones available are a crap shoot.3 points

The first set of drill bits I got from HF I tried to drill into some wood, and the bits untwisted! Threw them away. Got another set some years later and they still work fine. With HF everything is a gamble, but most work relatively well. Tom3 points

Drill bits

One of my customers, years ago, gave me a package of industrial quality 1/8" drill bits. I'm still using them and I think I have a half package left. Great stuff. While we are on the subject, does anybody buy/try the drill bits from H/F? The prices are great if the bits are any good. I made the mistake of buying some cheap brad point bits off Amazon and it was money wasted. They looked good in the picture but the tips are off center.3 points -
I'm with everyone in aplauding our pattern makers. I'm not a pattern maker but have done a little in Inkscape to make minor mods, so I have a feeling for the amount of work involved and it makes me even more appreciative of what thay do.3 points

I keep seeing all of these posts about how unhappy people are with Delta Products, but they never seem to learn not to buy them. I am of the opinion that if you have an inferior product and you put it on sale at the box stores or amazon that people are going to scramble to buy it, because they want Cheap First Quality products, and when they aren't happy with it they send it off to be repaired and wait forever to get it back. Then they can complain to everyone that they were taken advantage of. I guess I am of a different breed, I got bitten once and Never went back nor will I ever go back. People are sure strange animals, and I guess they will never understand. The words" Cheap"and "Great" don't go together ! Rant Over ! Merry Christmas.2 points

Quick Late Christmas Gift

Steve Good just posted this project a few days ago and I figured what the heck, I'll make them for some family members back west. Although they are done as of tonight, I won't be able to get them to the post office until maybe Thursday morning so they'll be late. I did use up some scrap though that wouldn't have seen the light of day for awhile. Yes they are Mascot, and the best mini bits I have found to date... Says they are carbon steel. I use to buy my bites through Mike's and about 1/2 of them wobbled so bad they were useless. I do like the Mascots from DnD.2 points -

And so it goes . . . Thanks to everyone who responded to my post. After a short discussion with myself (and taking into consideration your comments on the matter) I decided to return the Delta to Lowes for a refund. My first thought after waking up at 5:30 a.m. was: there shouldn’t be a long line at the Lowes Return counter. While the coffee was brewing I made a short video clip of the machine running with the clattering noise, along with me moving the motor with my hand. Listening to the video, you can hear the motor slow down as I turn the motor with my hand. And you can see the movement also. Boxed it up and the return at Lowes was painless and quick – at 6:30 a.m. there was no line of people ahead of me. I am going to write to Delta and describe my experience with the unit. Was thinking of addressing it to the attention of their Quality Control Department (wonder if they have one?) or perhaps the Complaint Department (wonder if they have one?) or maybe better yet, the CEO. Then again, I may use the shotgun approach and send to all three. From Lowes it was back home (only 1.5 miles away) and ordered the Delta on sale at Home Depot. Thanks NEW2WOODWRK. . . . I had seen that ad AFTER I had initially placed my order at Lowes. I’m surprised at how much HD discounted the Delta 40-694. I thought I was getting a good deal from Lowes with my military discount. It makes me wonder if Delta is lowering their prices to empty inventory for a newer model. The printed material that came with the saw was dated 2013 suggesting this model has been around several years. Thinking back on my purchases of equipment over the years, I do not remember ever having a problem with the item operating as it should right out of the box (after I used and abused it, sure). I want to believe this Delta saw is an exception and not the norm for this model. January 4th (delivery) we will see. I try to live by “two is a trend”, so if the next one also has problems I will return it and move on to another brand. Happy Holidays to all.2 points -
I guess I am old school I use 1/16 bits and another two which is .047 & .039 I hve some 1/16 bits from H.F. and they are good bits and cheep. IKE2 points

I don't see any reason why you'd change it.. not broke yet.. I used to use the 1/16" bits from HF.. came in a pack of 5? I think.. never had a problem with them.. Now days though, I rarely use anything bigger than a #60 and I haven't found those small ones anywhere local other than Menards.. which are also okay bits but pricey.. Last bits I bought I got a bunch of them.. they was purchased a few years ago from DnD sawblades.. Can't remember but I think they are Mascot brand..2 points -

WOW! that turned out nice, I'm surprised that you was able to get it done. I knew you was busy with the caregiving per our PM's and I figured it'd be a longer time before I seen the final product.. I bet the scrolling helped ease some stress from the caregiving.. Gotta take some time to relax and do some scrolling every now and then.. glad you was able to do just that. Take care of yourself.. you can't be a caregiver when you're down too.2 points

First time I made the 50/50 BLO I mixed it up in a plastic recycled rainX windshield washer solvent gallon jug.. The mix sort of melted and deformed the jug.. It took it several days to do so but none the less it was softening the jug.. so with that said.. Not sure if they have metal spray bottles or sprayers.. depending on the type of plastic it might melt.. and it may not melt the bottle but maybe the sprayer parts of it.. Worth a try though I suppose.. just be aware of this possibility.1 point

OCtoolguy reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
If it were me, I would return it and get a replacement if they have it - they should. That is just sloppiness out of the factory and I would also contact Delta and tell them about it as well It is a good saw and for the money, I think it is the best in that price point in fact I have 2! The Dewalt is also a good saw, and if it's still on sale at home depot for $299 that is another good option. (Just checked my local and it is not on sale here) As for the repair, like you I can DIY some stuff, but not comfortable taking equipment apart - but this repair of tightening the nuts and bolts was easy peazy! If I can do it, anyone can. Keep us informed though either way! Oh and don't give up the ship - this is just a bump in the road.1 point -
