    Two of my projects

I am new to scroll sawing and am pleased with these 2 projects. I asked for help with a pattern for Coffee and Jesus and Don from Brooklin came through for me. Thanks Don. My lady likes it and it is now hanging in our kitchen above our coffee bar. The dragon is from a Steve Good pattern, "Dragon 2016". I have yet to finish and mount the dragon. "Coffee and Jesus" is done in 1/4" mahogany with a 1/4" plywood backer. "Dragon" is done in 1/4" paduak. Both are done on my Pegas saw with Pegas #3MGT and #5 MGT blades. Happy New Year all!

  5. Just finished these 3 portraits. The 2 Nurse ones are by Heldas Botas and are for my sisters. Both are Nurses, one in Perth, the other in Mandurah. The truck is by Sam Custudio . I have a second one cut, but am waiting for felt for the backing. They are cut from 4mm Hoop Pine ply, 3mm mdf backer painted black. A3 size Frames are radiata Pine, the truck is natural, one of the others stained Rose Wood, the other Dark Mahogany. Cutting lacquered with 30% gloss and frames full gloss. There was another post with people discussing how they "hang" their works. so I have included picture of the rear of mine so you can see how I do it.

This is where I differ a bit. I have too many hobbies and projects and not enough time. So I just need my tools to work so new it is for me. I have had to spend too much of my time fixing and repairing things in the past. I do love fixing things but for the most part my projects are more fun. Fortunately for the first time in my life I have the resources, a lot of which was generated by my Hawk G4 26, to buy what I want.

I may have posted this Jim Blume before but what I'm really posting is the frame. I have a bunch of particle board that I was thinking of throwing out. Then I noticed one side is very smooth and I kind of liked the geometric shapes. I made a frame to try my rebuilt sled for my table saw. There is no finish on the frame. Also it is very smooth and should take paint easily.

Interesting. I would caution you regarding using any water based paint on OSB. It could get underneath the surface and lift the flakes. I put it on the walls of my shop. Painted it with a standard latex interior paint and have a few places where the surface is lifting. Not a big deal on a shop wall, but maybe not ideal on a frame. If you paint with water based, I would seal it first with shellac.

The corners are just glued with Titebond III. Usually I reinforce the corners with a couple of staples. The cutting is not fastened into the frame yet. I'll use the Honey pine on it and give it a topcoat of shellac or semi gloss lacquer. The material is 1/2" thick.

  21. Looks good Dave! I’d take a picture of my set up, buts it’s tucked up between my clamp rack and a storage table. I only use it for my ROS, so the vac filter only needs to be cleaned once a year, weather it needs it or not! That’s how effective the Dust Deputy is!

I have a Delta Unisaw 5hp works like charm for the last 8years. I had my choice between the 5hp Unisaw or a 3hp Sawstop. The Unisaw was $500 cheaper and more power.

Very creative Les!! It has a very casual/rustic look, so in some applications its very good and in others I don't think it will work well. Are the corners simply glued together or did you add some mechanical fastener? And how thick is it?

Here are some stain samples. Top to bottom: Gunstock, Cherry, Honey Pine, Ebony. All are MinWax stain. Apparently except for the Honey Pine darker stains are a no go. I do think the nice smooth surface should take paint very well. Second photo just compares the Honey Pine stain with unfinished Particle Board.

  26. These are 2 more that I was able t cut this month. Charles Dearing pattern Zombie Santa and Helder Botas Rose from the movie Titanic. The zombie santa I am very disappointed in because the BB ply started to separate while taking the pattern off . I was using painters tape on that one but Rose was a little different, I used press n seal instead of tape.

I have used that stuff (in Northern Ontario we call it Aspenite) on several floors at Pellow's Camp. I hammer it down, countersink the nails, use wood filler on the holes, sand everything down to 120 grit, then but 4 or 5 coats of Varathane on it. It looks good, it's cheap, it last's well, and (once the floor has been sealed) it's safe. Here is a (not very good) photo of my daughter Kristel playing on one such floor shortly after I installed that floor 45 years ago.

  31. I posted both of these before under Bragging Rights with long winded stories. Both of these were made for my Lady who loves Hummingbirds. I made the Hummingbird lamp a few weeks back and it was supposed to be a supprise for Christmas but, as things go, she got to see it and claimed it right there and then. So I managed to make the Hummingbird Jewelry box without her catching me, posted pics of it a few days ago, and then wrapped it and put it under the tree before she found it. Whew...took some doing. I have one more gift to make for Christmas at my daughters request and I'm cutting it thin (no pun intended) time wise. I ordered a special pattern from Scroller over a week ago and it has not arrived yet. If it shows up soon and I'm able to finish and ship in time for it to get to NY by Christmas I'll grab a quick pic and post it. Wish me luck. Edit: OOPs, I did forget to include a pic of the six Christmas Crosses (Stack cut) I made for neighbors and family members: Edit #2: In case anyone is interested, I did manage to make the Gift my daughter requested and shipped it to NY. The package is sitting in the FedEX facility near her (today 12/17), but deliveries are being held up by the snow stome in the NE. She will get it tommorow so still made iot in time for Christmas with a little time to spare. Edit #3: (12/22) Thought I would just add another gift I just made for my Lady. Look under Braging Rights "R" if for my Lady.

  32. Hi all, This idea came from several concepts I saw all over the net. I am terrible at straight or smooth cuts. This is going to my grandaughter who takes music lessons. I hope it gets her past traditional notes. Multi notes are a better than black and white notes. There is many problems with this piece. Terrible matching thickness of lines. etc.

    compound cut santas

The pictures didnt come out to well but these are the compound santas'mrssantas and a witch i still have to paintthe belt buckles on the santas . I used sawdust and glue to make the hair and fur on the santas. A friend gave me some expoy resin to try working with. Now i have used it years ago on flat projects could some one tell me the best way to put it on these compound cuts? when there all finished i'll repost new pictures. only 2 of the santas are the compound cut, the rest i made out of the scraps from the compound cut, these will be used as magnets and perhaps as over lays on other projects. some might be put on crafts made from other meduems.... or turned into pins. I still have some other compound cut pieces to paint and im working on painting a fret work peice to. and i still have the layered snake to paint and put together.

Ok here is my other idea that is a little bit easier. But might not look good. Since the wood chips kinda look crystals, have different colors of stains to enhance the particle / chips shapes. Only do the large ones. Then use the honey stain over everything. Maybe high gloss vs satin on big chunks might add a frost crystal effect. Oh when I did a leather project that industry had stamps for symbols including indian southwest symbols. Before I made the model train, I made a belt with that train loco embossed stamped on leather.

Cool idea but I am not familiar with Indian symbols. In addition the frame is only 1-1/2" wide so the symbols would be too small for these old eyes to cut. If I were able to do so, symbols could be wood burned on the frame. That would look great. Unfortunately I can no longer even write. I have to crudely draw each character or number. Thanks for the idea though.

  45. Every year we make and send out an ornament card for a select group of family and friends. Thirty cards this year, we have been doing this now for 15 years. The highest number was 40. The ornaments are stack cut 1.5mm ply and mounted in photo cards with removable adhesive. My wife writes the sentiment. This one is from 2006. The second ornament is a laser engraving. My dental hygienist knew that I made ornaments and asked if I could do an image of her parents dog that recently died. I was going to try and design a cutting but I just did not have the time and I have never really done a fretwork design. Intarsia yes fretwork no. I found this pencil drawing that looks just like their dog, then engraved it with my little engraver on birch plywood. This was also my first attempt at something like this. I am very pleased and in return I accepted a box of exceptional homemade cookies. I look forward to hearing from her after Christmas, I suspect that there will be tears.

  46. Decided to make this for me. Took me two days to cut. Normally it would take a hour max, but with my eyes bothering me so much I can only scroll for a very short time. Now I just hope my niece doesn't snitch it. She's a huge BigFoot fan.

  47. Each year I make gifts for the teachers at my daughters school. She is the principal. This year it is mini birdhouses. Numbers way down this year as some of the teachers reassigned to the virtual school.

  48. Did a couple of these earlier this year, finally got the second one a home. We'd gotten our daughter some horse-riding lessons (in part to help with anger management, part to just get her out of the house and into the sunlight for a while!), so it just made sense. Plus, my wife says I make her enough stuff during the year, she doesn't need anything more at Christmas time. She'd prefer something more....sparkly. LOL
