  1. This is certainly nothing to brag about but, I made this old fashioned car from a pattern in a 2012 Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts mag azine for my 8 year old grand-son. The rear wheels turn a cam which makes the driver bounce up and down. It really made me feel good when he told me how much he liked it but, it made me feel even better when he turned it over and examined how the mechanism works! Young children have a brain like a sponge and I want to encourage him to use his mind in any way imaginable, God Bless! Spirithorse

    Cross Robin

When we lived in Buckinghamshire just west of London in the early 1970s, a robin with attitude thought that she owned our back garden. I found a pattern by Sue Walker in the pattern library here at SSW that very much reminds me of that robin. She entitled it 'English Robin' but I am calling my rendition 'Angry Robin'. Here is a photo: I cut this from 6mm thick veneer with a thin Mahogany layer on top. The frame is 1/4 sawn White Oak painted flat black.

  5. I squirreled away some money from the sale of my bass boat for shop equipment. My three major items are a Delta 36-725T2 table saw (on order) a DeWalt DW734 planer (in the shop) and a Wahuda 8" jointer (ordered yesterday) ! Then I'll make some rolling tables, one assembly about 4' x 4' same height as the Delta saw's table for an outfeed and assembly table. Then one each for planer and jointer also sized to match the assembly for extended outfeed. I may even make one for my benchtop drill press and get it off the main workbench. When I rearrange the shop they will roll up to an outside wall for storage, leaving the center of the shop open. Well...at least that's the plan...LOL.

    Morality

I very much like the quote about morality by H. L. Menkin. It's been a "tag line" in my posts here for some time. Last week, I decided to make a pattern for it, to cut it, apply a finish to it, frame it: And to hang it along with other quotes that I try to live by in my office: I think we all need to be guided by what I believe is the basic goodness of most people rather than blindly following the dictates of religions and cults. Getting back to the piece itself. It is cut from 3mm thick Baltic Birch plywood and backed by the same. The frame is of 1/4-sawn White Oak painted flat black.

  7. FrankEV recently created this and told us about it in the thread: Parrot and Peony - Bragging Rights - Scroll Saw Village Here is a photo of my attempt: And here it is hanging with other birds on a wall in our (very small) downstairs Loo: This is cut from 3mm thick Baltic Birch plywood and the backer board is the same material. I painted the backer using many different acrylic paints. I found it hard to locate the correct colours exactly behind the holes that I had cut. The painting was much more difficult than the sawing and I won't be doing anything like it any time soon. The frame is made from 1/4-sawn White Oak and I gave that a distressed look by first painting the frame then sanding off some of the paint. Everything was finished using clear gloss "rattle-can" stuff.

    Blade organization

Hello I have been rearranging my shop for several different reasons However I just started feeling cramped and having no real follow. In my task of organizing I did not realize I had the amount of blades that I have. Although you can never have too many blades. So I can up with this idea in the picture so that I would know what I had and start acquiring the other blades that I wanted/ or needed. I built a cabinet with having a special drawer dedicated for my blade`s.

    Three Stooges

I felt like a fun, easy cut so I took some liberties with @Chachi111769's pattern. These guys were a huge part of my 1960's childhood Saturday mornings. I would set my alarm at 5am so I could catch them and The Little Rascal's before the regular cartoons came on. It'll be nice to have some old friends on my shop wall. Thanks for the pattern Chachi!

    small drill bits

Hi ya'll....I'm just now at the point in my scroll sawing journey where I am wanting to do some intricate fret work patterns. I have a good set of drill bits and some of them are very small, but not small enough. Looks like i'm going to need a chuck adapter and some micro bits. I'm curious as to what ya'll use and where you got them. I saw where Harbor freight had 30 micro bits for $2.99 but that seems awfully cheap. Any help would be appreciated.....Thanx

    Round Box

I wanted to try something different. The top scroll pattern was not too complicated other than shrinking it in my printer to make the pattern fit. Cutting sides were tougher. It is made of 1/2" thick 16 poplar segments. Formula calls out 22.5 degrees per unit or 11.25 degrees per side. Height is 5.5" I wasn't concerned with grain orientation since it would be painted. I had a larger board and it was easy to cut and flip to get all the angles on the table saw. My Wixie digital angle indicator works great! I blue taped all the segments together against a straight edge and then made sure that it actually made a circle with no gaps. "pretty close". I laid it down again and then 2 sided taped a piece of wood strip the length and then cut off the top section (about 3/4") with table saw. Then Routered a 1/4" groove on the inside for the bottom. I cut a disc for the base and then removed the 2 sided tape and wood strip and assembled sides with base with titebond glue. I used the blue tape and rubber bands to hold it all together. I drew a circle on top and bottom of both the base and top and used my oscillating sander to sand to the line. I waited to glue the top so I could sand the inside even (to the line) so the router could follow a even circle. I have a Yonico multi size rabbiting bit to create the inside/outside groove on the top and bottom plus some sanding to make it fit right. I mounted a 1/8" disc top and painted everything with black lacquer and then glued the scrolled plaque on top. I have a compass rose I made a few years ago and may try to make a larger box with some better wood to show the grain.

  14. We lived in Tucson for about 3 years, About 2 blocks W of I-10 on Grant, we were managing a self storage and lived on site. Lots of fantastic restaurants, and the southern most ski resort in the US. Had a shooting range about 5 min. from the house and a gun show every other weekend. Lots of interesting things around there.

  15. Congrats on the tools! Reminds me of when I got my garage built ten or eleven years ago. Lots of tool purchases... drill press, table saw & miter saw were first day items for me. Lived all my life with no place to put tools so when I finally got a place I wasted no time getting some serious tools. Here in southern AZ I want but cant justify a boat Lol..

  16. Nice list of new tools.. you will wonder how you did everything with out the planer.. Probably one of the most used tools in my shop besides the scroll saws.. I've been tool shopping to.. Mostly just buying add-on things for my CNC and Laser.. looking at getting a much larger laser.. but the $8000 price tag is intimidating.. trying to decide if I have enough fat to hold me over for a year of not eating.. and if the shop is warm enough now that I put heat in there for my bed to sleep on is worth it or not,

  18. I am glad I don't need to mail order. It's nice to be able to pick watch you need. My friend wanted to buy some wood and I noticed the wood went up almost a dollar a board foot since I purchased some in December. It's only a 20 minute drive but I am going to check my other sources to see if it's universal price increase for my local places. My woodworking club shop supermarket.

I get mine from amazon. Just search by the gage. I prefer a #72 which is very small. I also use a jewelers spring type drill which I also got from amazon for like $8 or something like that.

    Buying lumber online

I can no longer get around and I gave up driving so I have been buying my lumber online for a few years now. I have been buying from various places for the last few years. Ocooch, Rare Woods, eBay, Woodworkers Source and a few others. Just wondering where others buy their wood and are you satisfied with the prices, quality and shipping. I personally like Ocooch as I can get sizes from 1/16" to 3/4" and they usually have a nice selection of domestics and imported wood. Of course you pay for that convenience. Their shipping seems high.

  32. I know that area well. We have been all over it. We went to the museum at Fort Huachuca. Great museum. Some of the best ribs I ever had were in a place there, I can't recall the name now. We went through about 6 months later and it had closed up. Nice restaurant. This was back about 10 years ago. I love that whole area around Benson, Tucson, Catalina Mountains. The State RV Park up in the mountains there is great.

    Band saw question

I use my Bandsaw way more than I do my table saw.. Probably would help if I had a good table saw though.. Smoked a bearing in my table saw motor about 5 years ago and smoke rolled out of the motor.. I took the motor apart and put a new bearing in it but it doesn't have the power to cut solid lumber like it used to.. Just a cheap Tradesman brand saw that I bought on clearance back in the 90's.. I only use it for breaking down sheets of 1/8 - 1/4 BB ply for the last few years.. I also like the Timberwolf blades.. Last time I ordered woodslicer resaw blade and I like it better yet for resawing purposes.. really nice blades..

  37. I bought 300 bdf from Johnsons the week between Christmas and New Years.. was the same price as always.. maybe the prices jumped with the new year? Hope not.. I need more lumber.. My brother just called me yesterday and said he has been cutting Walnut and the grade inspectors rejected several pieces.. when he says that it means come get it out of his way.. and a few boards to him is 100 + bdf, LOL.. Next week I'm picking up my score, LOL Unfortunately I have to sticker it and wait a year or so before using it.. Man I hate that and running out of room to sticker this stuff.. The rafters is stuff full in both my shops.. Finally started using the Cherry and Maple he gave me 1.5 years ago.. Hopefully soon I won't need to buy any lumber... Now if I can talk him into making BBply

    Band saw question

I installed the Carter stabilizer on my bandsaw it works great. I use an eighth inch blade that is the only size used. I have another bandsaw with a resaw blade. The best part of the stabilizer is you don't use the lower blade guide. Once you setup the stabilizer you're good to go. My old blade guides are in a drawer.

    linkage geometry Why?

I have two Delta's. A 40-690 and a 40-694. Both my saws have that slight movement of the blade back and forth. I do not notice any problem when I saw. This movement does not affect my fret cutting in any way at all. Suprisingly, if you ignore it, it's a problem that will go away.
