Got my dust collection plumbing done except for my scroll saws. I will tackle that down the road. Thanks to many of you for the help and ideas. I sure am pleased how it all works. My shop isn't normally this clean and tidy but now and then I bring a scoop shovel in and clean it out. 482625067_ShopTour.mp48 points -
1st cut after surgery

I tried a couple of mini chucks from different sources. The 3 split chucks do not work well. However, the Dremel 4 split chuck does work but only works in a Dremel. I posted the following a few months ago and it has worked very well since: The Dremel drill press as is, because of it is only 3" from the bit to the post, is imparactical to use for drilling blade holes in almost any fretwork larger than 6" wide. However, I had the idea in my head I could do something to make it work and Home Depot near me had the Dremel Drill Press/Tool Station in stock for $45. I took a chance (knowing I could return it if I could not make it work) and bought it this morning. After I got it home and did some investigating how I could make it work the light bulb lit up in my brain and this was the result. There is a shelf above my workbench that was just the correct height to allow me to mount the base upside down. I slid the Drill press body on the post opposite of what is normal. The press can be rotated around the post allowing it to be swung out of the way if necessary. I use a piece of 1/4" ply as a drill backer and set the stop so the bit will not punch into the workbench top. Very easy to locate the bit ove the point where the hole is needed. From the bit to the wall is about 11" so as positioned it can accomodate panels up to about 22" wide.4 points

Morality
malar and one other reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
I very much like the quote about morality by H. L. Menkin. It's been a "tag line" in my posts here for some time. Last week, I decided to make a pattern for it, to cut it, apply a finish to it, frame it: And to hang it along with other quotes that I try to live by in my office: I think we all need to be guided by what I believe is the basic goodness of most people rather than blindly following the dictates of religions and cults. Getting back to the piece itself. It is cut from 3mm thick Baltic Birch plywood and backed by the same. The frame is of 1/4-sawn White Oak painted flat black.2 points -
Automated Car
Alexander Fadeev and one other reacted to spirithorse for a topic
This is certainly nothing to brag about but, I made this old fashioned car from a pattern in a 2012 Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts mag azine for my 8 year old grand-son. The rear wheels turn a cam which makes the driver bounce up and down. It really made me feel good when he told me how much he liked it but, it made me feel even better when he turned it over and examined how the mechanism works! Young children have a brain like a sponge and I want to encourage him to use his mind in any way imaginable, God Bless! Spirithorse2 points -

I felt like a fun, easy cut so I took some liberties with @Chachi111769's pattern. These guys were a huge part of my 1960's childhood Saturday mornings. I would set my alarm at 5am so I could catch them and The Little Rascal's before the regular cartoons came on. It'll be nice to have some old friends on my shop wall. Thanks for the pattern Chachi!2 points -

Buy it! Try for a lower price. Bring it home, tear it down and do a full maintenance on it. It'll probably outlast you. They are great saws with care & maintenance. Good luck.2 points -

Hi ya'll....I'm just now at the point in my scroll sawing journey where I am wanting to do some intricate fret work patterns. I have a good set of drill bits and some of them are very small, but not small enough. Looks like i'm going to need a chuck adapter and some micro bits. I'm curious as to what ya'll use and where you got them. I saw where Harbor freight had 30 micro bits for $2.99 but that seems awfully cheap. Any help would be appreciated.....Thanx1 point

My version of 'Parrot and Peony'
Alexander Fadeev reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
FrankEV recently created this and told us about it in the thread: Parrot and Peony - Bragging Rights - Scroll Saw Village Here is a photo of my attempt: And here it is hanging with other birds on a wall in our (very small) downstairs Loo: This is cut from 3mm thick Baltic Birch plywood and the backer board is the same material. I painted the backer using many different acrylic paints. I found it hard to locate the correct colours exactly behind the holes that I had cut. The painting was much more difficult than the sawing and I won't be doing anything like it any time soon. The frame is made from 1/4-sawn White Oak and I gave that a distressed look by first painting the frame then sanding off some of the paint. Everything was finished using clear gloss "rattle-can" stuff.1 point -
Cross Robin
danny reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
When we lived in Buckinghamshire just west of London in the early 1970s, a robin with attitude thought that she owned our back garden. I found a pattern by Sue Walker in the pattern library here at SSW that very much reminds me of that robin. She entitled it 'English Robin' but I am calling my rendition 'Angry Robin'. Here is a photo: I cut this from 6mm thick veneer with a thin Mahogany layer on top. The frame is 1/4 sawn White Oak painted flat black.1 point -
Macaws (a Pair)
Frank Pellow reacted to FrankEV for a topic
I found this Kenny Hopkins pattern in the Library and thought it was something that would be nice to make. I resized and modified the pattern just a little to suit an 11”x14” panel with a 3/4” perimeter frame. The cutting was fairly easy and was done with Pegas #1 spiral blades except for the straight cuts on the frame which was done with a Pegas #5 MGT R. The cut panel is 5/32” Maple solid core ply affixed to a 1/4” BB ply stained dark with MInwax Ebony stain applied over a base coat of Walnut stain. Again, as usual, I finished the panel with multiple coats of clear Gloss Spray Lacquer. I made the custom frame from 1 3/4” wide Poplar. In an attempt to improve the looks of my frames, after sanding to a fine finish with 600 grit paper, I used a Minwax pre-stain treatment and then finished it with a Minwax Gel Stain in a new color I found called Brazilian Rosewood. This color stain is medium dark but fairly transparent, exposing and beautifully highlighting the Poplar grain. I thought this looked very good and complimented the panel nicely. The frame was then protected with a couple coats of satin Wipe On Poly.1 point -
Hi allHoping you can help. I have my eye on a used dewalt 788 scroll saw. Great condition. Hardly used. Comes with stand on rollers and light. When I asked how old the machine was I was told it was bought back in year 2000. I am sure the unit has changed since then as they still sell it today. What can you tell me about purchasing a 788 that is that old? I did learn about the type 1 and 11 motors. They are asking $300. for everything.ThanksPaul1 point

Very nice shop and selection of tools. Too nice for me to work in, LOL One thing I lack in life is organization skills.. If my shop is organized I can't find anything.. LOL I couldn't view the video on my PC but worked well on my iphone.. BUT.. yes I have slow DSL internet so the phone with 4G is faster than my internet sometimes.. also depends upon how many of my kids are gaming, youtube etc at the same time as to whether I'm allowed online or not, LOL I think a lot has to do with how the site optimizes the video for viewing? I'd love to do more youtube stuff but it takes an hour to load a 10-20 minute video.. I can load the same video on FB or other places in about 3-5 minutes.. My son does youtube stuff but he has a way of optimizing it before he uploads.. I've asked him a few times how he does it.. but he won't set me up with his method.. he just goes and does it for me.. but then when I have a video every couple days for him to do it don't get done.. he needs to teach me not just do it for me, LOL1 point

Offer them $250, grab it and run. I got one used about 10 years ago for $250. Only thing wrong with it was rust on the table which I got off. I love this machine and it's still going strong. As long as it looks and runs good you'll be OK. Take a piece of scrap to cut as a test when you look at it and change a blade to make sure all works well and check the dust blower too. If you do get it, I recommend one of these: https://jimdandy.com/products/easy-lift-system-for-dewalt-scroll-saw-dw788 Makes blade changes so much easier.1 point -
I also find that the videos posted in the group, in general, do a lot of buffering. Maybe when you load videos to youtube or facebook etc, they are automatically optimised for play back, and not on sites like this. Alternatively the resolution (very high) that the video's are taken and uploaded in required a more band width then is available. Just thinking out loud.1 point

I was going to try to down load it and it was going to take 3 hours.... Do you have this video somewhere else? I want to see your shop!!!1 point

Whenever I can, I use 1 mm since it accommodates all the way up to FD-UR #5. My drill press holds a 1mm bit just fine (which surprised me). I was worried that I would be breaking the bits since they are so small so I bought a pack of 50 (Amazon $8 for 50 bits). My drill press has been great though and I have not been breaking bits like I thought. I just ordered some #68 bits because I can see that they will be handy.1 point

Thinking About A New Miter Saw
NC Scroller reacted to ben2008 for a topic
I guess I must just be too dumb to know better. I have been cutting picture frames and compound miter cuts (for cove molding) for about 25/30 years. I started with a cheap Ryobi miter saw then advanced to a Makita compound miter saw with a stand and stops. It has a built in hold down. You must secure the wood to get accurate cuts. I saw Norm Abrams ( New Yankee Workshop) do it many years ago and just followed his advice. Are there other ways to cut picture frames and cove moldings? Yep, and pretty sure they work just fine too. Forgot. This is the saw blade I use on my miter saw. Freud D1090X 90 tooth blade.1 point -

Proud Owner - RBI Hawk 220 vs...
Scrollmate57 reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
In My opinion you got the best saw Hawk made, LOL... I have a 1993 220VS with the round clamps and the Fasco (SP) motor that they say can have issues.. It's a decent saw and I've not had any issues with it.. I also have a 1998 226 Ultra.. and it's a awesome saw.. I wanted a new style so in 2019 I bought a brand new BM-26.. I like that one better than the old 1993 but it's a tough call as to whether I like it better or not then my Ultra.. All are great saws.. Have fun with your new saw and hope to see you posting some project photos etc..1 point
