Owl

Things happen, and they did in a big way, in my second attempt at a fretwork/sculptured project. The pattern is Owl by Seyit that I modified to suit an 11”x14” panel and adjusted for carving. The panel ‘started out’ as a piece of 3/4”x11”x14” and the pattern was cut with Pegas #1 spiral blades. The many-hole cutting itself was quite time consuming as the pattern has many very close together cut outs and required very slow cut speeds. After completing the scroll work I attempted to lower the background using a small trim router and a router sled to create a uniform lowering. I was removing 1/4” of material and as I moved across the piece the panel began to warp, causing the cut depth to vary, making the surface uneven. I stopped and when I returned to the shop the next morning, I found the panel had flattened out and I was able to clean up the uneven cuts. I was close to being finished when, in attempt to clean up a remaining small area, I proceeded to put a big, unrepairable, gouge in the panel. In order to try to save the scroll work I cut away the background from the image area. I then proceeded to do the necessary carving and painting of the image before affixing it to a 1/4” backer that I embellished with some colored work. The Frame is just pine with a detail trim strip, stained with a Minwax water based stain called Royal Pine that turned out to be very ‘Blue’ and not the color I was looking for. I added the gold color to the beading with Acrylic Craft paint and then finished it with Minwax water based Polycrylic clear satin protective finish. The water based products do dry much faster but I don’t think I will be using this system in the future. Every project is a learning process, and boy, did I learn a bunch with this one!7 points -

The "Re-do" is the "Bread and Cheese" pattern by Fiona Kingdon. I completed it once before, then destroyed it trying to round over the outside edge.... My mistake,,, picked up the wrong router bit.... All okay I loved scrolling it so I cut it again.... This time it is cut in 1/2" Maple... Dipped in Tung oil. I will probably cut this one a third time, just because I like cutting it... The "New" Fiona Kingdon's "Bee on a Comb", cut in 1/2" Beech. I have not sanded and finished it yet... I really enjoy cutting her patterns... I have several more to go..4 points

This week's pattern: wolf

Another H.Botas pattern. Some of the cuts are razor thin, the branches, for instance, I would run my blade up one side on the first pass, turn, then coming down the other side there were a lot of places where I was just shaving the kerf a little bit wider. Used Pegas #3MG blades, 3/4" whiteboard from Lowes.2 points -

Cross Robin
danny and one other reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
When we lived in Buckinghamshire just west of London in the early 1970s, a robin with attitude thought that she owned our back garden. I found a pattern by Sue Walker in the pattern library here at SSW that very much reminds me of that robin. She entitled it 'English Robin' but I am calling my rendition 'Angry Robin'. Here is a photo: I cut this from 6mm thick veneer with a thin Mahogany layer on top. The frame is 1/4 sawn White Oak painted flat black.2 points -
Macaws (a Pair)

I found this Kenny Hopkins pattern in the Library and thought it was something that would be nice to make. I resized and modified the pattern just a little to suit an 11”x14” panel with a 3/4” perimeter frame. The cutting was fairly easy and was done with Pegas #1 spiral blades except for the straight cuts on the frame which was done with a Pegas #5 MGT R. The cut panel is 5/32” Maple solid core ply affixed to a 1/4” BB ply stained dark with MInwax Ebony stain applied over a base coat of Walnut stain. Again, as usual, I finished the panel with multiple coats of clear Gloss Spray Lacquer. I made the custom frame from 1 3/4” wide Poplar. In an attempt to improve the looks of my frames, after sanding to a fine finish with 600 grit paper, I used a Minwax pre-stain treatment and then finished it with a Minwax Gel Stain in a new color I found called Brazilian Rosewood. This color stain is medium dark but fairly transparent, exposing and beautifully highlighting the Poplar grain. I thought this looked very good and complimented the panel nicely. The frame was then protected with a couple coats of satin Wipe On Poly.2 points -
Three Stooges

I felt like a fun, easy cut so I took some liberties with @Chachi111769's pattern. These guys were a huge part of my 1960's childhood Saturday mornings. I would set my alarm at 5am so I could catch them and The Little Rascal's before the regular cartoons came on. It'll be nice to have some old friends on my shop wall. Thanks for the pattern Chachi!2 points -

The pattern is available on Etsy. If anyone wants the info I can post it tomorrow as te info is out in my shop. I really posted the video to see if I could. I tried to email it to my desktop computer from my cell phone but it would not send because the file was too large. However, it uploaded to the Village just fine. Now that I can do that I need to find how to edit videos. I may need editing software on the cell phone but don't know what kind. So You Tube here I come.2 points

I like this Frank. The frame turned out really nice especially for these birds. Very unique look. I might play around with your staining idea on Poplar. Its always interesting doing that sort of stuff. BTW, I was in Home Depot the other day and my eye caught some super cheap 1/2" Cedar fence pickets ($2.52 for a 6ft board) and the boards were all straight as an arrow. Well I can afford $2.52 so I went to playing with one.. I tried oiling it but that was a waste but then I stained it with Minwax Dark Walnut and the transformation was amazing (IMHO). The problem is that it has an odd smell since it is "Incense Cedar" which is a smelly tree but I made some signs with it that look great.2 points

Morality
malar reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
I very much like the quote about morality by H. L. Menkin. It's been a "tag line" in my posts here for some time. Last week, I decided to make a pattern for it, to cut it, apply a finish to it, frame it: And to hang it along with other quotes that I try to live by in my office: I think we all need to be guided by what I believe is the basic goodness of most people rather than blindly following the dictates of religions and cults. Getting back to the piece itself. It is cut from 3mm thick Baltic Birch plywood and backed by the same. The frame is of 1/4-sawn White Oak painted flat black.1 point -
