I was asked to make a going away gift for one of the bosses. I was given a demilitarized 20 mm barrel and told have at it. The base is Padauk with a Yellow Heart inlay. The scrolling in the yellowheart are the details. A 20 mm projectile is mounted at the end and inlayed coins of the units that worked for him. Can’t tell, but there is a laser etching of an F-16 on the left corner. It is piled with Teak oil and no sealing. The receiver schooled me in that Germans done seal their woods. Under the barrel are two risers made of Oak. Hope you guys and gals enjoy it.8 points

'Dig Me' valentine

I am going to give this "card" to Margaret tomorrow morning: It's a Steve Good pattern that I used but I replaced Steve's wording. When our daughter Kathleen was 3 she, with her Grandmother's help, gave us some candies that looked like this to us for Valentines Day. The candies had various sayings on them and Kathleen thought that that saying "Dig Me" was very funny. I can certainly understand why a three year old would think that. She referred to all the candies of this type as 'Dig Me's and that's what our whole family has called them ever since. Yes, that type of candy still exists. I know that Margaret is going to love this. It triggers so many happy memories for both of us.7 points -
Was looking for something different and I found this 11” x 14” pattern called Double Trouble by Jeff Zaffino on the Scroller Website. Looked challenging…boy, was that quite an understatement! This cutting took toooo many hours as the pattern has well over 400 holes and many of the cuts were not much bigger than the #64 drill bit I used for the Pegas #2/0 spiral blades I used. Because of the many tiny cuts it was difficult to work cutting on this pattern for more that 2 or 3 hours at one time. The cut panel is 1/4” thick Mahogany solid core plywood affixed to a 1/8” thick BB plywood backer painted Flat Black. I chose the Mahogany plywood because after studying the pattern I knew that I was going to add color and the Mahogany color would work well for the tree. The coloring was done with Artist Oil Paints using the dry brush technique in order to obtain the shading and highlighting. This requires the first application to be dry before applying another tint. Oil base Artist paints take a long time to dry and this extended the project time considerably. The border is painted also to create a matted effect. The finished panel was protected with two coats of clear spray Polyurethane after the coloring was complete and dry. The Frame is another simple 1 3/4” wide Poplar frame stained with Minwax Brazilian Rosewood Gel Stain and protected with two coats of clear spray Polyurethane. I used the Minwax pre-stain wood treatment before applying the Gel Stain. In my opinion this stain color is about the best looking slightly transparent color for the Poplar wood.6 points

I don't have a drill press (yet). And I have difficulty drilling a straight hole- discovered when I started making starter holes with my hand drill for the practice pieces I was working on. So, I looked around and found the Dremel Plunge Router. Just got it in today and tried it out. I like it - small and portable and easy to use with small drill bits. And who knows, I might even use it one day to do some routing work.3 points

The plunge router, be it Dremel or others, is the way to go if you are cutting large, 11" x 14", or larger fretwork designs. The drill press can be altered to drill large pieces if you are or know a welding expert and have the steel pipes necessary to extend the "throat" opening! It has been years since I have seen the dimensions to do that with and have no idea who had the plans to do this! It is much easier to use the small routers anyway! Erv3 points

How nice! Great Story! I did the standard dozen Roses thing this morning for my lady and will be making a fancy dinner tomorrow. That being said she did approach me this morning with a suggestion for a project she would like me to make for her. I found the appropriate patterns and ready to start cutting. Probaly more than 400 holes, so it will take a while and wont be ready by this Valentines day.3 points -
I have a plung router for about 5 years . It works great where you can't reaach with a rill press. IKE3 points

Congratulations. I bought one for the same reason, to drill holes. Yes it works great. The drill press has limits that the plunge router overcomes.3 points

Scraps - New uses and projects...
danny and one other reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
So after reading all the responses (thanks all) of what to do with my scraps, I've decided to make the following Children's sets. When I place patterns for cutting, in all the gaps, I also place any of these smaller patterns giving me a lot less scrap overall. It also allows me to use the new scrap pieces I get from the local lumber yard they are giving me. These sets are made from Basswood and Pine scraps and can be painted/colored and are becoming fairly popular at our events. I have several more made from Oak and poplar scraps as well Thanks as always in advance2 points -
I'm really embarrassed about this. I thought (my first mistake) my Jet table saw just died. It slowed down to a crawl and just quit. It never tripped the breaker. I felt the motor and it was extremely hot. I just assumed it was shot. That was my 2nd mistake. Anyway. a few days later ( Monday evening) i decided to take a look at my owners manual. Lo and behold it has a reset switch on the motor. I never saw it because it was covered in saw dust. My 3rd mistake. I pushed it and reset the motor. I'm now back up and running. Saw is all cleaned up also. Sorry for the panic. My only excuse is I'm 81 and getting old and things just don't work like they used too including my brain. I want to thank everyone for the comments and offer to help. I'll try not to jump to conclusions in the future. Thanks again everyone PS: Everyone is so kind and helpfull on this forum. Ben2 points

I have the Dremel plunge router. I us it all the time for drilling holes. I find mine quite accurate for even the tiniest of drills. I also have a drill press with a 1/2" chuck, the smallest drill I can use is 1/16".2 points

Boards from Dollar Tree???? can't find them.

Family Dollar is owned by Dollar Tree, my have some luck checking those stores.2 points -
I did get them from Dollar Tree. Kevin is right they have other pre cuts which can be used for ornaments etc. I keep checking the website but they don't have them. I checked with our store manager and she said they flew out the door (as usual). Crafters Square is the brand that Dollar Tree carries. I expect them to get them back in in the next few months. I will keep checking. Thanks everybody for checking.2 points

Another bandsaw thread - sorry :(
new2woodwrk and one other reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
Well, rather than start YET ANOTHER bandsaw thread, I thought I'd just add to this one. I have been watching a lot of videos about marquetry since the topic has been brought to life. My point here is that in the process of viewing these videos, a video popped up on AccuSlice add-on for a band saw to produce whatever thickness veneer you might want. So, I just had to watch a video about it and it is really a neat system. Seems that it will fit just about any bandsaw that has a 3/4" miter slot. It's not cheap by any means but if a person is really into doing inlay or marquetry I can see where it would pay for itself. Of course, the quality of the bandsaw would matter greatly but if you have a decent 14" bandsaw and have it tuned with a good quality blade, I don't see why it wouldn't work very well. Here is a link to a couple of videos. I did go to their website to see pricing and as much other info as they offered. Enjoy. I did. I believe it was my fault. I was trying to cut 2" thick Sapele hardwood. Sapele is quite a dense hardwood and i should have not taken such a big bite. I know better, but i thought i could cut the full 2 inches with no problem. I was wrong. I did cut 2 pieces but then it slowed down after that and just quit. That's when I jumped to a conclusion. I thought because it was about 25 years old it just died. The Jet contractor saw I have is only a 1 1/2 HP older model. It cuts 2" Walnut, Cherry etc OK. It just didn't like that Sapele very much. After i discovered the reset switch and restarted the motor I took smaller bites the 2nd time around, and it is just fine now. Thanks for asking. Ben2 points

Life going a bit cr*p just now so not had chance to make much saw dust, but finally found some time so got 3 pictures cut, jimmy Hendrix,Janis Jopplin and Bob Marley they are all cut on 12mm ply and are A3 in size 11 x 16 inch sprayed with a clear lacquer, am not over happy with the Janis Jopplin but its what was asked for, still to put a black backer on the Bob Marley as his face is floating and will be glue to the backer but i am kind of undecided as to try a Jamaican back ground with thick stripes of colour1 point -

These were a request from a shop owner where my daughter sell some of her jewelry. Both made from 3/4in pine with scrap booking paper on the front. It doesn't show very well in the photo but the love paper's got small hearts over it. The Love pattern is one of Steve Goods but I altered it a little. Marg1 point -

That's very true Wayne. Back in the days when I was selling Snap-On Tools, I was always getting the comment that the tools were too expensive. My comeback was always this: "Buy the best and cry only once"!. It makes so much sense. But, now at my age, it makes no sense to spend the big bucks just so someone else can have the benefit of the "BEST" once I'm gone and they get my stuff. That's why I watch Craigslist.1 point -

amazingkevin reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
I'm going to pretty much echo what the others have said in this thread. I doubt very much that you would ever be happy with a 10" bandsaw for re-sawing. Re-sawing successfully requires a fairly robust saw and a good amount of tuning to get it to cut straight. You may be able to make curvy cuts in 1" thick material all day with a 10" saw, but when you start re-sawing, you are putting much more strain and stress on the blade. It has to be adjusted perfectly, both for alignment and tension. Re-sawing also requires a wider blade than most most other kinds of cuts on a bandsaw. I don't know what the maximum width is of a blade for a 10" bandsaw, but I doubt very much it's wide enough for effective re-sawing. I don't know any thing about Harbor Freight's bandsaws. Personally, I'd be leery and would need to see a lot of really good, objective reviews before I would try one. I have a Grizzly 14", the popular G0555 model and frankly have never been completely happy with it for re-sawing. It does OK, but if one little thing is out of tune, the cuts are poor. It's very fussy to get adjusted correctly, at least in my experience. I know a lot of folks have that saw and love it, so my issues are likely due to operator error and impatience.1 point -
Marquetry
amazingkevin reacted to crupiea for a topic
I always felt that marquetry was the true measure of a man as they say when it came to the scroll saw. It just seems like the master level stuff we all would eventually want to stride for. I have watched a few videos and tried it but it looked terrible. Now I might have to give it another go with these links and tips here.1 point -
