This 1/8”X9”X17” BB cut panel affixed to a 1/4”X11”X19” backer is another ZM Creations Illustration I converted to a scroll saw pattern. The cutting was done using Pegas #2/0 and #0 Spiral Blades. I actually finished the cutting a few weeks ago and set it aside because I was unsure how I was going to finish it. The ZM Creations Illustrations are somewhat simplistic but very colorful making them suitable for conversion to a scroll saw pattern with coloring in mind. This particular Illustration was interesting but I was not happy with just a colored Illustration on a white (or in this case a natural wood color) background. I felt it needed the water and sky to be in color also but wasn’t sure how to handle the border of the cut panel. When I finally decided to do the painting I decided to leave the cut panel border natural and make the backer border black. I sprayed the panel before removing the liner/pattern. Please I took a lot of liberties in the painting colors. The painting of the cutout areas on the backer panel was done using Acrylic Art Paints and the cut panel was colored using rattle can spray paints. I like the Krylon Fusion All-In-One products as there are a lot of colors available. I’m learning to do wet on wet spraying to get some blended/shaded colors. Once again the Frame is a simple 1 3/4” Poplar frame. The wood had a fairly clear grain so I just used the wood pre-stain treatment and finished with an application of Minwax Classic Oak Polyurethane/Stain. This was the original Illustration.

  2. While I was finishing up my Double Trouble project a while ago, my Lady (Robin) had seen a magazine with pictures of beautiful ladies fans on the cover and ask me if I could do a cutting of a fan. The fans in the picture were very ornate and they were not suitable for making a pattern, so I went hunting for fan patterns. I found four on the Sue May web site. I did not feel only one fan would make a nice presentation so I decided to do all four and present them as a group. Yes four individual patterns but over 500 holes in total. One panel was done in one 3-4 hour cutting session using both Pegas #0 Spiral and #2/0 MGT R Blades. Four days total. All cuttings and backers were cut from 1/8” BB Ply, painted with various colors of Krylon Fusion All-In-One rattle can spray paints to “sort-of” match the colors shown in the Sue May Patterns. I use 1/4” Birch plywood to create a colored 18” x 24” full backer that the individual fan panels were affixed to. This full backer was set loose into a custom made frame cut from pre-primed Brick Mold available from Lowes. When the better half asks for something you just got to drop everything get it done as soon as possible. When she is happy, I’m happy. Now I can go back to my projects.

Just want to share what I have been up to a lot lately. I bought a bunch of Sue Mey's puzzle patterns, and have been making them for clients including the Pets name. They are selling real well

With a title like that, how could you resist looking?! I'm buried in Steve Good patterns and cutting my way out. Anyway, we have a friend who loves hummingbirds, so I made this for her. 3/4 inch pine (called for 1/2 inch but I didn't have any on hand) using #5ST Pegas blades. Now to ponder a backing color. And thanks to all of you in the Village for being here and sharing your knowledge. It has helped me greatly.

Challenge accepted -- Nailed it I believe 30 x 40 overall - all in 1/4 and 3/8 Baltic birch except frame. All cut with a #3 modified geometry. Learned some new things to add to my arsenal - always a good thing!! Sorry haven't been on here much -- spend most of my time with this work and grand littles

  8. I cut this 11X14 Alex Fox Pattern titled Eagle-Flag from 1/4 inch thick Oak solid core plywood, that I stained with Minwax Weathered Oak stain to enhance the Oak color. The cut panel was affixed it to a 1/4 inch thick Mahogany solid core plywood backer that I darkened with Minwax Mahogany stain to improve the contrast. The panel was finished with multiple coats of spray lacquer. The cut was done exclusively with Pegas #0 spiral blades. Cutting the Oak was slightly more challenging than the Maple or BB Plywood I usually use. Had to cut a little slower and even the cutting sound was different. After the cut was complete the vertical grain alignment produced an interesting look. The panel is loose fit into a solid Red Oak Frame which I made and also darkened with the Minwax Mahogany stain. The Frame was finished with multiple coats of clear Gloss Polyurethane.

    Newest items

Things have been pretty busy doing shows and figured I'd share some of the newest things we've created. Me and the wife and oldest daughter all cut and we do 30+ crafts how's a year here in Florida. During the cooler months from October - April you can usually do a big 2-4 day show every weekend if you wanted to. This past weekend we did a Strawberry Fest (2day event) and it was a record weekend broke my gross sales record (4day event) by $200 so it was a great weekend and it seems things are running good and back to normal here in Florida. Just keeping up with inventory some days can be stressful while working fulltime jobs still but we're having fun and making money together as a family so it isn't to bad. Cutting so much I had to come up with a bigger drying rack for puzzles. On average we're cutting 50 puzzles a week. Thank fully the Florida sun has been out so they dry pretty quick. We did a Strawberry Fest last weekend and they asked everyone have a Strawberry related item for sale. I work at a high school and talked with one of the students in art class and she drew me a pattern for a strawberry puzzle. Turned out great and now she's drawing a few other items for me and she's happy because she's making some extra spending money. I have a Seafood Festival in May and a good friend suggested I cut some fish out so did some Google images searches for a redfish and snook and we cut them out he came up with the idea of mounting them on some wood with dowel rods and they turned out awesome. Also cut some bigger fish around 25 inches long as wall hangers and they went over well just done have any pics.

  11. I went to my lumber a=yard to get some BB ply and they were out so Idd3ecded to look around. they had a staack of 8 ft popular marked down to $275 pr board ft. Well wlhat can I get it for he said tat there was a little over 50 BF.and I could have it for $125 I agreed tp that and bought 8 ft of 6" soft maple for $37 I knew I had a good deal and I figured it out @ 53 board ft . They were of random with 3<5 the smallest and 12" the largest, any way I got the 53BF for $2.35 a BF at regulaar price they would have been $165.00 IKE

  13. I had a loose nut, well, my saw did, and it was making all sorts of noise. After I calmed down, I was able to locate the noise. The nut that joins the link rod to the upper arm assembly came loose. I snugged it up but it did it again. I snugged it again but with Loctite this time and it's on its fifth year with no issues. Loctite is amazing.

this is a beautiful piece. I would like to give it a try sometime also. I like challenges, most of the time, but sometimes I get frustrated with them. I love lots of fret cuts because when you are finished they are so awesome, like your project here. Thanks for posting Dick heppnerguy

  15. I'll bet it has something to do with the tension rod. They are notorious for that rod hitting the aluminum cover. If it starts doing it again, try readjusting that rod. Shortening it will keep it from hitting. And also, there is an article at scrollsaws.com on how to file down that cover to give it some relief. Here are some pics of what you have to do.

  16. You are not alone. Reminds me of me working on the computer when it acts up - try so many things without writing them down and next thing I know, the problem disappears. The good news is: Ya fixed it! YEA!!!

    Thanks Travis

A few weeks ago @Travis added a project workshop feature to the site that has directions to go along with a project. I liked his love sign and shared it with my high school kids. Three of the kids decided to make a version, of course being kids only one used the word love. Another student was playing around and made a compound cut puzzle. I had never shown him any compound cutting, he just was experimenting. I am excited to see what else these kids make.

  19. Nice buy, I pay 2.75 bft regularly! I have the formula on my phone so when I go to my local shop I can check them as they add @Rockytime Board feet IMO has several interpretations... Board feet = length(ft) * width(in) * thickness(in) / 12 Example: 16' x 9.75" x 1" / 12 = 13 board feet However, many lumber yards will use a simpler calculation (it assumes boards to be 1" thick) length (in) x width (in) / 144 192" x 9.75 = 13 board feet You'll notice that if you use the top calc with a 3/4" board which is an actual size the board feet is significantly lower - 9.75 board feet https://www.southernpine.com/lumber-calculator/ https://www.omnicalculator.com/construction/board-foot

    Hawk dust collection

I can now confirm the bucket inside CAN still collapse. Was working on a piece yesterday for about 4 hours. When I was done for the night I looked over and seen what I thought was a big hole in the side of the bucket. It was the inside bucket was totally collapsed. I'm going to need to totally rethink/rework my setup. Trying to concentrate on cutting is difficult with pieces constantly getting stuck in the bends of the 3/4" pipe and this Duststopper with a leaking seal/collapsing bucket. It worked good when initially setup and doing a few test cuts. However when doing actual work for hours at a time I have found several things I need to change.

  24. I'm sure you will find plans for a stand that will work. However, in reading the above included in the text, it remines me of what I did when I started scrolling. Created my shop in a very small shed. All was fine in the begining and just thought I could sweep up the sawdust and cuttings and all would be fine. After a few months, my small space was covered with sawdust top to bottom and no amount of sweeping or even using a shop vac to clean up worked. Scrolling is realy, realy a major dust producing craft. I hope you have thought about that and the space has good ventilation and the possibility to install some kind of dust collection system. I learned the hard way and have now a small system that works great. My shop is still quite dusty from the work I did in the past, but as time goes by I get to clean a lot of the nooks and crannies where the dust has collected.
