    Return to Venice

I recently did a Venice scene cutting and happened to be scrolling through Pinterest and found another scene I really liked and had more detailed. I especially like the Rialto Bridge in the back ground. Lots of very thin lines in this pattern and did some mods on the fly so things didn't break. I also did my paint fill in technique on some of the dark spaces to match the background.

And it works! You can turn it in a complete circle over and over and . . . Saw this on Steve Good's website and it grabbed me right away. What should have been a one day project turned into 3 - Murphy's Law paid me a visit with the tension knob not tightening. It's doing its job now, but I need to order a new one. The underside where the tension rod is - well, the indentations that the tension rod sleeve catches on were just about worn smooth. I noticed if I apply downward pressure while applying tension, it will tighten up just fine. If I just move the tension knob horizontally, it doesn't take up the tension like it is supposed to. Anyway, I had a happy ending once I got that sorted out. Thinking of staining/painting the support and base a darker color and just doing a clear coat on the shells.

  9. While I was finishing up my Double Trouble project a while ago, my Lady (Robin) had seen a magazine with pictures of beautiful ladies fans on the cover and ask me if I could do a cutting of a fan. The fans in the picture were very ornate and they were not suitable for making a pattern, so I went hunting for fan patterns. I found four on the Sue May web site. I did not feel only one fan would make a nice presentation so I decided to do all four and present them as a group. Yes four individual patterns but over 500 holes in total. One panel was done in one 3-4 hour cutting session using both Pegas #0 Spiral and #2/0 MGT R Blades. Four days total. All cuttings and backers were cut from 1/8” BB Ply, painted with various colors of Krylon Fusion All-In-One rattle can spray paints to “sort-of” match the colors shown in the Sue May Patterns. I use 1/4” Birch plywood to create a colored 18” x 24” full backer that the individual fan panels were affixed to. This full backer was set loose into a custom made frame cut from pre-primed Brick Mold available from Lowes. When the better half asks for something you just got to drop everything get it done as soon as possible. When she is happy, I’m happy. Now I can go back to my projects.

    Misty Magnifier

I thought I'd share this tip which I discovered today. Using a glass magnifier with integral LED illumination as an aid to more accurate cutting on the scroll saw, I often have the problem of moisture from my breath condensing onto the cold glass surface of the magnifier lens, which severely restricts visibility to the point of being unusable. Whilst cutting today, I had the idea of using the bellows blower nozzle on the Hegner to keep the magnifier lens clear of mist whilst cutting. By positioning the blower nozzle to one side of the magnifier, so that air is blown across the upper surface of lens, it worked the same way as interior windscreen de-misting vents on a vehicle. As I already have a separate extraction nozzle to the rear of the blade, I found that I didn't really need my original bellows tube to blow dust from the front of the blade at the same time. I would imagine that an aquarium air pump setup would also work to prevent the magnifier lens from misting.

  12. Thanks Paul for the great patterns of my daughters. They were fun to cut. 1/8" laminated Russian BB, #2/0 Pike blades. The first photo. my oldest daughter required 73 holes and 2 1/2 hours saw time. The second is my youngest and required 69 holes and 2 1/4 hours saw time. Probably more than most want to know.

  13. I attend the wood expo at Johnson’s Workbench that Kevin does. We probably passed each other never meeting. I go both days attend several presentations and check all the tool vendors and wood deals. I always spend too much money but it’s a good time. I never tell my wife what I spend and she doesn’t notice a new tool setting around.

    Misty Magnifier

I wear the cheap dust masks that have no exhale vent, just exhale through the material. Chnge it frequently for a new one when it starts to get dirty with dust. Not unlike the ones you get in a drug store. I do prefer the molded style w/ the 2 elastic head bands.

    Misty Magnifier

I'm wondering, are you wearing a dust mask? If you are I'm very supprised your breath would hit the lens. If, not, I highly suggest that you should to protect your lungs, and it will probably prevent your breath from hitting the lens. It also seems you must have your face VERY close to the lens. You might want to investigate a different mag light with a higher magification so you do not need to be so close. My lens gets very dusty and needs to be cleaned frequently, but I never get condensation from my breath and my saw is in an unheated shop where temps get quite cool during the winter months.

  20. I made my grandson this when he was almost one. It was just something that he could play with at Nana's house!! Traced a take out container and modified it a bit. He is turning 3 this year and it is still one of the toys that always comes out!! You could easily add a cord to make it a pull toy!

I really like making toy cars that kids can really play with. The c shaped car on this page has a really nice shape that kids can hang on to pretty early. https://www.craftsmanspace.com/free-projects/simple-toy-on-wheels-plans.html

  24. I know that I have not posted for awhile but I have been in my shop quite a bit lately. I made and mailed some things before I took a photo of them so they are not available any longer. Here are a few of the ones that I have made. A couple I cut a while back and sold or gave away so I decided to recut them for myself. Dick heppnerguy

    Kokopelli

This is a Sue Mey pattern but I changed the base because I didn't like the big large round base I prefer the smaller oval one. The base is pine and Kokopelli is blackheart sassafras. This one is for me, I have loved this little fellow every since I first saw him about 20 years ago. Marg

Beleive it or not, I only spend about 3-4 hours a day in the shop. Usually very early in the morning. Painting is done in short spurts to allow for drying time whenever time permits.

    new to toy making

Have ago at one of these Tony. When I made them, I couldn't keep up with people wanting them for 1st Birthdays. The War Office was the biggest customer, whenever we had a niece or Nephew it was, " John do you have the letters to make up xxxx" The base is about 100mm long on the letter carriages, and made from 40 x 19 pine. The letters are cut from 75 x 19 pine. You don't have to have an engine pulling the carriages, I also had a truck and a Volkswagon beetle. Painted with household acrylics. Also a couple of "Wobblers" a dog and crocodile. I also did a cat and cow Have fun mate.

A rather perfect pattern to cut as all the necessary details are there but not a bunch of added lines. Makes for a pleasure to cut. I think wood portraits are a perfect gift that will be cherished for a long. long time Dick heppnerguy
