  1. About 10 or so years ago I had a customer request a special cross for a remembrance piece for their father. I made one of these crosses for each of the kids whos father had passed.. At the time they was cut from spalted maple as shown in the photo.. I had a large amount of it given to me.. and still have most of it left.. Beautiful wood but for fret scrolling the light and dark streaks takes away from the cutting.. Anyway the customer contacted me a couple weeks back when I was on Vacation and said sadly her brothers house had burnt to the ground and he lost everything.. asked if I could make another one similar.. Fortunately I save ALL my custom order patterns.. well I save any patterns I have cut and sold in a special folder and back it up onto thumb drives and disc etc.. so I knew where to look for the design.. Talk about customer service... I made the piece for them and mailed it out totally free of charge and thanked her for doing business with me back when I was first starting my online selling venture.. First picture is the original.. second is the replacement I made.. Due to the spalted maple wood grain I didn't cut out the leaf decor on the originals.. I cut the second one from a piece of Poplar.. Kind of wish I had done it out of cherry but that poplar board was just staring at me like choose me me me.. LOL Turns out his favorite wood is lighter colored wood so it all worked out great in the end.

    Sign for Nephew

My nephew asked me to make a sign for his friend. Cherry with green resin-filled letters. Font is Algerian with some modification. Finished with rattle can poly then buffed with steel wool. It was fun to make but very fragile and hard to fill the narrow parts. This may be the first project I posted in over a year.

  3. Cutting done on the second layer. Just need to clean off the fuzzies on the back, and decide on stains! Also a couple of photos with the two layers together (including the little ship). There will be a spacer between the two layers.

    Copyright Reminder

Just a reminder, please not to share patterns you didn't design yourself. If they're from a book, there are copyrights attached to those patterns. Instead, point them in the direction where they can obtain the patterns for themselves. This is also true for patterns from other websites and digital products. Even if they're free patterns, many times the artist wants to control how their hard work is distributed. We want to respect the designer's wishes and support the artists that make these wonderful patterns. There are times when the designer has passed away and the patterns are no longer available for purchase. It may seem like copyrights no longer pertain or we may want to extend their legacy by sharing their work. Unfortunately, copyrights still do persist 70 years beyond the designer's death. The rights are transferred to his/her estate. It is up to their estate as to what they want to do with the designs. Also, please remember that I'm just a solo guy who runs SSV on the side for the scrolling community. I try hard to make this a friendly place with a ton of great information and resources. We have a fostered a group of really great people who want to be helpful. Sometimes we don't think anything of sharing a pattern with a fellow scroller. But please keep this in mind. We can't use SSV as a platform to share patterns that don't belong to us. A single letter from a cranky lawyer could potentially shut down the whole website. So I try to be diligent about protecting copyrighted works. SSV is a big place and I can't see it all. If you see something that doesn't belong, please flag it for review (the 3 dots under the upper right corner). Clayton or I will take a closer look. Thank you for understanding.

  6. It started yesterday, on a custom unit for a customer. Got it all glued up, profiled it, cut out and sanded. Turned it over and noticed there was 2 faults in the wood. Ugh! Started over with a new piece... Got it all done, dipped and ready to spray finish... It falls off the finish table and breaks in 3 pieces! UGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!! So disgusted. It's now a money losing piece! Ready to give the customer back their payment Thanks in advance for letting me vent!

  11. Iggy didn't like the saw and gave it away to someone.. He is a devoted DeWalt guy.. even bought a new Pegas and didn't really care for it either and went back to his trusty DW's.. You get used to a certain way a saw cuts and it takes a long time to get into the groove with a new saw... some people struggle with that change.. I bought a new one back in Dec. 2017 but didn't take delivery of it until late March 2018.. I love it...

  12. Firm believer that everything happens for a reason.. many times we look back on the bad in life and actually see why and or what good came from that bad.. God works in mysterious ways. Yes - I got a dose of that yesterday - breaking a couple blades from using too much tension. Switched from a larger blade to a much smaller one. I am learning something new every time I sit down at the machine.

Just joined here. I'm from Iowa and have been using a scrollsaw for the past 20 years. I have a 26 inch RBI Hawk that I bought in 1996 new. Never had any trouble with it and have used it a lot. The pictures are some of the signs I have been making the last few years.

  15. Murphy's Law is unfortunately a real thing. But fortunately, Murphy has a sister - Millie - who goes around doing good things for people. Kind of like the Fairy God Mother. So hopefully, she will visit you in the near future and give you good fortune, thereby replacing this bad memory with a good one. May she visit you more often than her brother.

  23. If you do cut it, make sure you use the specified drill size for the holes in the gears. Mine were too big and everything was sloppy and would not work correctly. I cheated and built up the dowels with tape to fill the gap so it would work. If you do not have the correct bit it would be better to use a 1/4" bit and open them up a tad by sanding/filing til the gears turn smoothly.

    Thanks Travis

A few weeks ago @Travis added a project workshop feature to the site that has directions to go along with a project. I liked his love sign and shared it with my high school kids. Three of the kids decided to make a version, of course being kids only one used the word love. Another student was playing around and made a compound cut puzzle. I had never shown him any compound cutting, he just was experimenting. I am excited to see what else these kids make.

Yes, and I want to find a place out of the elements where the person(s) won't be bothered by bugs or the weather. I have a different geocaching puzzle at a library where geocachers can sit down and solve it to get the coordinates and then go outside to find the container. That works well, so I want to find a similar place for this one. If you have the time and interest, you could always attend a geocaching event and connect with someone there and cache with them. It's been a great way for us to get some fresh air and our steps in (Lord knows I need to, my wife is a terrific cook and the only thing I can't say no to is the temptation to eat more than I should).

You have cut that beautifully. When I buy a batch of blades I unwrap all of them and check for the top and bottom and place them in the container bottom side down. Therefore I don't need to check which end is which.

I was just telling a friend about you and your high school woodshop. He is just starting his scrollsaw experience and made his firsh project and is in the middle of his second one. I was showing him some spiral blades and it reminded me of you and how you stated sometime back that you start your woodshop kids on spirals. Haven't seen you here for awhile. So glad we still have so many 'old timers' here, and of course for you I would have to change it to 'long timers." Dick heppnerguy
