    I am excited

I have a few new friends in my neighborhood and one in particular that I just had to make a project for as a gift. He has a nice road bike that he enjoys a lot so I thought it would be nice to make him a wood piece for him of his bike. He was not only excited and humble to receive it but was extremely interested to see just how I could make such a project. So I invited him over to my shop and see for himself. When he told me he would be over the next day, I made a scroll saw pattern of a few squirrelly lines and after he watched me for a little while, I had him sit at my saw and said to him, "Now you cut there lines'. I also had a simple cat pattern from Steve Good that I had him start cutting and the following day he finished it and took it proudly home. Today he finished his third piece, a wood portrait of Elvis. He was so excited and so was I. Now I have someone to scroll with, in my shop. I am the lucky one for making and gifting him with this motorcycle. Dick heppnerguy

  2. I am only a learner to sroll sawing. I got my new carbatec scroll saw yesterday. I am feeling proud of doing this as I have never done anything like this before. I had only been cutting out the outside of things with my ryobi (now in cupboard). I was scared to have a go at this and taking the blade in and out through the holes and learning about my new saw, wooo hoooo I did it. Still need to sand it as the owl is only sitting loose on the back board. Not sure if to paint the owl or not Susan

    My first newbie projects

My first completed projects, the vase ins wenge and maple and the bowls are cherry. I figured if I was going to ruin wood I wanted it to be expensive wood. To my surprise they turned out OK.

  6. While searching through my archives I saw one of my favorite wildcats project and thought I would post it. This is a large dimensional project done on tiger maple. The individual plaques are one inch thick with raised carvings of the scrolled animals. The plaques are attached at varying depths to the supporting framework. This is ''WILDCATS OF THE WORLD"

  7. Kevin I did not give the blade front back motion a thought. I do have my blade motion on the EX almost vertical. I will measure my Hawk and the EX when I get some play time. You make a good point about actual run time. When doing fretwork, Depending on the saw, the project may take several hours but the actual cutting only a portion of that. Some of you are probably wondering why this is even of any interest. I am a tinkerer, can't help it.

  8. I am glad that Travis selected this topic for the Challenge because it is one of my favorite subjects. Great to see all of these cat projects. Well done folks!!! This is one of my earlier projects that other scrollers might not have seen. "KING OF BEASTS"

  9. When it rains, it pours. I went in today to see if I can make things look a bit nicer, but the software isn't behaving properly. Every time I try to update the lesson, it deletes it instead. A few years back, I purchased software that manages courses like this. Unfortunately, the development of the software was early access begin with. The forum software has since updated, and the developers of the course software are not keeping up. So while the Village University is functioning and folks can access the lessons, I'm going to try to figure out a new solution. So expect some changes to Village University once I get things figured out. /sigh

  10. Finally done! 50 patterns - US states. I tried to make detailed but not to difficult contours of states, size is 9 x 5,5 inches. I cut only one pattern - Texas, I used 1/6 inch birch plywood and wood stains for finishing (recommend to use 3 stains or 3 types of wood) Video of making US state project US states patterns

  12. Hello friend, this time I show you the bike I made. I am a fan of all types of motorcycles. I hope you like the work, it is pine wood in 3/4 inch, length 13 "high 9" Thank you very much in advance for your comments.

Now, I know absolutely nothing about bikes, but a friend asked if I could do this for him. I've never painted anything before as I prefer plain wood and plain backers however I said I'd give it a try. Just hope he likes it as it's going to the USA and I don't want it back. It's a gift so he can do with it as he wishes. It was, to me, a pain in the backside to get right, so I doubt I'll do another one

    Penny Drop

So the other night we had the neighbors young kids over and I tried to lay hands on my Penny Drop game I made a few years ago (BSS - Before Scroll Sawing). Not to be found, we went with a card game instead. After searching the house twice over to no avail, I remembered a Penny Drop pattern on (you guessed it) Steve Good's website. Shocked and amazed, I got this cut out and assembled in what seemed like only 2-3 hours. But who knows how long it took - when I get cutting, I lose all track of time and the clock is behind me. If you've never played the game, give it a try. You can even make up your own rules to include your favorite beverage (wink and grin). On a side note - I'm thinking this could be a money maker for those that cut for a living with stack cutting 3 or 4 at a time. Thoughts?

  15. Cutting done on the second layer. Just need to clean off the fuzzies on the back, and decide on stains! Also a couple of photos with the two layers together (including the little ship). There will be a spacer between the two layers.

    Sign for Nephew

My nephew asked me to make a sign for his friend. Cherry with green resin-filled letters. Font is Algerian with some modification. Finished with rattle can poly then buffed with steel wool. It was fun to make but very fragile and hard to fill the narrow parts. This may be the first project I posted in over a year.

    Gravity Ball

This Steve Good pattern grabbed my attention as soon as I saw it. And it was surprisingly easy to cut (I really shouldn't have said that out loud - Murphy never sleeps around my house). Now to find a place for it.

  24. Congrats, you did make something nice. It just takes practice and courage to do it. I have been scrolling for years and I made an Ark of the Covenant scrollsaw project for our Pastor for Christmas and I've never done anything that complicated. I took a picture of it and hung it up next to my scroll saw with a sign over it that says If you can make this Bill, you can make anything. Try that one, it may help keep you on track Bill in Wisconsin

  26. You did a great job on your first scroll saw project Susan! What woods did you use? It appears you used a hardwood for the Owl, or at least a hardwood veneer plywood. Using any oil based finish such as lacquer or polyurethane will bring out the natural color of the wood. If you use a water based finish, it will not change the wood.

  32. I experience the same with blades.. But I don't think it has to do with the speed.. but I do think it's from heat.. For instance.. I don't run my Hawk full speed.. Probably closer to the same speed as max speed on the EX.. which I do run full speed. However.. when I had my DeWalt, I did run it full speed ( 1700 spm ).. and blades lasted longer than the Hawk still.. I think it has more to do with the blade having a more straight up / down movement on the Hawk which doesn't back the blade away from the material nearly as much and letting the sawdust clear better. The short rocker arm saws such as the DW, EX etc saws give a more rocking motion of the blade which backs the blade out away farther from the heated cut line.. Even though you adjust the blade to be more straight up / down at the table height it's still backing away motion enough to cool the blade more.. Also as you noted.. those long arms ( especially on the 26" saw ) create a lot more stress on the blade than that little short arm of those other saws.. There is probably "some" blade flex with those long arms and having it powered from the lower arm like they are designed especially with those real small blade.. Randy ( HotShot ) talked about this flexing issue when he had his Hawk.. I don't use anything smaller than a #3 most times unless it's a spiral.. most times those are a 2/0.. I'm not sure how you all adjust your saws.. but I've never been able to get as true of a straight up down at the material height on my EX as I get with the Hawk.. I have it set as close as it can get.. yet it's still more aggressive cutting than the Hawk is.. However I do set the blade angle on my new Hawk to be slightly more aggressive.. since I do mostly cut 1/2 - 3/4 material most all the time.. But cutting 1/8 - 1/4 material I find the Hawk is easier to control the cut than the EX is.. Both are doable easily but the Hawk I'm more " relaxed" during the cutting process.. If that makes sense.

    Im so excited

Hi Susan, I was a little confused about your description you stated as it describes a different model Carbatec saw than what you have. Your model SS-450P is designed like a Hegner they also have two other saws on their website that are of the Excaliber or Pegas design.

OK, it's not a cat, but it could encrypt a message with the word cat in it . . . along with "be sure to drink your Ovaltine". My wife and I do Geocaching, an activity that can include solving a puzzle in order to get information (GPS coordinates) that will lead you to a hidden container with a logbook where you sign your name. I know, sounds dumb, but we have enjoyed it going on 14 years now and have had a lot of wonderful experiences, met lot of nice people, and seen a lot of sights in the USA and overseas. Anyway, I took this Steve Good pattern and beefed it up a bit - made it 150% of original size - now roughly 15 inches by 7 inches and used 1/2 inch wood with 1/4 inch for the dials. I tried the 1/8 inch but it just wasn't holding up to the handling. I probably violated some scroll saw etiquette by using wood screws to hold the case together but wanted it to endure the handling it will likely get over time. It was fun to make, but I did learn a little more about the things you have to take into consideration when you enlarge a pattern - like hole size enlarges too (sheeze, head slap!)

    Kitten Play Center

Hello friends, I hope you are all well. Well now I am trying to experiment with another way of selling. I know it is not scroll saw, however I think many will like it because it has kittens as pets. Hopefully and it is a good business, since in this pandemic we have suffered from the lack of sales and it has affected everyone. I send each of you a big hug, greetings from Puebla, Mexico. video1.mp4

  42. Newtowoodwork. As Kevin and the others have said I have an outlet strip connected to my footswitch with my timer and saw plugged into it. On my EX for tracking the actual runtime hours for maintenance purposes I put a hour meter (Amazon) in the line that goes to the motor. I mounted it in a pvc box attached to the saw table.
