  1. Another quick cut, probably 6 hours total in the project. I wanted to give a tip from Steve Good's newsletter a try. He'd written about another scroller who wrote in to him and said that he (the other scroller) gave the back of each of his projects a quick spritz with rattlecan shellac before applying the pattern and drilling pilot holes, and the shellac helped to keep the fuzzies to a minimum regardless of whether a reverse-tooth blade was used or not. I decided to give it a try. A quick spray (ProTip: when spraying outside, pay attention to the direction of errant wind gusts. Took me a couple of days to clean off my glasses.), let it dry, flipped it over and taped/glued the pattern. I used a spiral blade for some of the cuts (still not a fan of them, they're handy but my ability to draw a straight line is...um...nonexistent) and a straight blade for the vast majority, and dang if it doesn't work! There were fuzzies, but they were tiny and rigid/brittle and most disappeared with a quick pass of some 220-grit on a palm sander. I think I'll be using this trick from now on.

    Army Plaque

I stacked cut two of these over a year ago. Gave one to a co-worker for his son, just got around to finishing up the second one. I'm not real happy with how the easel turned out on this one. After looking at the pictures I think that I need to cut the top of the middle piece a bit shorter. I used scrap Pine for the stand and BBP for the plaque and backer. I know that Pine doesn't stain very nice so I use a pre-conditioner on the stand but it still didn't take a stain very good. Oh well, the wife is happy that I finished another project that I started last year,, well almost finished,, still needs a finish sprayed on the stand.

    Mt. Rushmore

I have been doing landscape plaques and decided to give Mt. Rushmore a shot. I was amazed at how many views and angles there are of this monument. I tried to find one with as little shadow as possible but never did find one where I could clearly see Roosevelt's eyes. I was able to get something on the left eye but but the right was a whole other story. Stuck with the shadow. Plaque is 14.5 x 12" 1/8" BBPW on a quarter inch backer, Finish is shellac with gloss shellac. Font is Umbria. My rendering only took a few days, not 14 years like the original!

  5. I cut these out of BBP with a FD UR1. The backer is some 1/8 scrap cheap ply that I had laying around. The first one I done several months ago. A co-worker saw it and wanted one. I made another but just a bit bigger. I'm not a frame maker.. at all! I found another similar image online that I wanted to cut but it needed some tweaking. Thanks for the help Birchbark!

    Beer Truck

Made from scrap cedar. fence boards- all rescued wood. About 15 inches long-8" wide and 9" tall without the load. Used scrollsaw, sander, and cutoff saws too. The front and back fenders came from the scrap box and were just sanded- cuts from some other project. As this was for me- I decided I wanted a cab-over-engine- in a 20's -30's theme. The color choice was also to fit the era. I had to add an extra taillight to meet modern legalities. The hubcaps and headlight are just thumb tacks that were brass colored- the taillights are the same tacks started in through a little masking tape-then colored with nail polish- when it was dry I used a piece of soft cloth and a wooden hammer to drive them almost totally in. Then pulled the tape and finished the setting them in solid. Oh it also fits many planters too, actually has drain holes on the bottom for planter watering accidents. Design again by T & E Designs.

  8. Followup on my previous Guess who. Although I'm not particulary into cutting people portraits, I had found this free illustration pattern .svg of Marilyn on-line and thought I would give it a try. And , although it was stated to be a scroll saw pattern, it had many "islands" and overlapping shading. It took me a number of hours to make it cutable. The patternsize is 9" x 13" centered on a 5/32" x 12" x 16" Birch solid core plywood panel and affixed to a 1/8" x 12" x 16" BB ply backer painted black. The pattern was a relatively quick cut completed with Pegas #2/0 blade. The finished panel was protected with multiple coats of clear gloss Lacquer. The panel is set loose in a simple 1 3/4" wide Poplar custom frame that is stained with Minwax Sedona Red and protected witn clear satin spray Polyurethane. Thanks to all who replied to the previous post and reccognized her immediately just from jsut her eyes. . .

  10. I am only a learner to sroll sawing. I got my new carbatec scroll saw yesterday. I am feeling proud of doing this as I have never done anything like this before. I had only been cutting out the outside of things with my ryobi (now in cupboard). I was scared to have a go at this and taking the blade in and out through the holes and learning about my new saw, wooo hoooo I did it. Still need to sand it as the owl is only sitting loose on the back board. Not sure if to paint the owl or not Susan

My wife just ordered me a new Hegner scroll saw, she is the best wife ever. I’ll be posting pictures when it arrives and it’s set up. (pics of the saw, not the wife. LOL)

Great blizzard! So far there is about 12" outside, unbelievable. However, it is nice and toasty in my shop. Have not had this much snow in a long time but March is our snowiest month. I can't shovel but wife does. But this is an unusual amount of snow. Gave the snow blower to our son in law because they have this big three car driveway. My grandson is coming over tomorrow to dig us out. First photo is out my shop window, the other is out the back yard.

    Seahorse

Cut this out while the tree guys were cutting down our trees around the house. The wife saw this pattern and wanted it for the guest bathroom. Except for one moment of not paying attention -which will be fixed - it came out OK. Now it's her baby to do with as she will. 9" x 13 1/2" using 1/4 Birch and #5 Pegas blade.

    Copyright Reminder

First of I’d like to thank Travis and Clayton for all they do for the site as I can only imagine the amount of work it takes to keep this going along with all the time out of their own busy scheduals to do so. Second, I guess I learned something new as I did not realize that once an individual has passed and there is no longer a way to get prints that they still fall under copyright guidelines for that far afterwards?? Myself I respect copyrights and the efforts and livelihood for everyone making them and for making plans available for sale for us scrollers as I feel all the plans, I have purchased from various avenues have been more than reasonable for what they are. Just like when someone here makes a piece and all the time and effort it takes to do so.

I still like getting out and shoveling snow. I take my time, enjoy the beauty and peace, and remember many happy times throughout my life shoveling with others. This winter has been very wimpey in Toronto. Right now we have no snow on the ground and I doubt that we will get any more this winter.

I'm so happy that you're happy. But please keep that stuff on the East side of the Rockies. I hate snow! I'm too old to ski anymore so there is no good use for it until it melts.. Then we drink it.

  34. While searching through my archives I saw one of my favorite wildcats project and thought I would post it. This is a large dimensional project done on tiger maple. The individual plaques are one inch thick with raised carvings of the scrolled animals. The plaques are attached at varying depths to the supporting framework. This is ''WILDCATS OF THE WORLD"

  37. I know I'm late to the party, but am going to post anyways. These are the three sports projects I've done. The helmet pattern is probably from Wooden Teddy Bear, or Scrollers catalog, but I modified each with the Montana State and Redhawk logos. The Wide Receiver Pattern is one I made from picture I found online.

  46. Was a great show when I went a few years ago. Met some of the folks I had only previously know on social media and we all had an awesome time together. And yes, travel, lodging, etc, can get expensive, but what isn't these days. As we find that we can no longer attend due to costs, the shows begin to die off as they have all over the country. Sad times we all live in.

    Painting Backer Board?

Welcome aboard Norm. I glue the painted backer on all the time. I typically use 1/16" Baltic Birch for a backer. Then I use "Aleene's Original Tacky Glue" to apply it and have never had a problem' Just use enough to hold the backer and try to eliminate too much squeeze out. I also use small spring clamps to get a nice tight fit. Good luck with your projects Ben

    Painting Backer Board?

First off, welcome to the addiction, if your not already you will be. It's a great place to be too. You can safely paint your backer board. Then glue the art work on top of it. I do the same when I am using felt for a backer and have not had any issues. Just be careful with the glue and squeeze out some can be a real pain to clean up. Feel free to ask any questions, there a lot of great folks here willing to help.
