A project finished Monday. This is a Steve Good pattern. I used 1/4" solid Walnut and backed with 3/8" Baltic Birch plywood. I used 3/8" so that it would hold the hanger without going through the wood. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using #1R MGT blades on all interior cuts and #3R on the exterior cuts. The finish is one coat spray Shellac as a sanding sealer. Then two coats MinWax Lacquer Clear Satin, sanding in between coats. I should have used 1/8" so that the white would show through the Walnut. 150 holes. Comments welcome.9 points -

I seem to have blinkers on at the moment, if it's not a box I don't see it, it might have something to do with the amount of 1 1/2" inch mahogany and 2" Oak I've had given me, they lend well to boxes lol, this one is mahogany top and bottom, Oak for the draw and Maple for the inlay, it is 2 inches high and 5 inch wide, the draw is 1 and a half inches high by 1 inch wide, Steve's pattern was for a glued on humming bird and flowers, but I altered it to an inlayed one, disappointed slightly with the birds tail, but as long as you don't all look at the original pattern I might just get away with it LOL7 points

Stack cut 4 from 1/8 bbply using a #3 Pegas MG3 blade. Three backers from 1/4” walnut ply and one from bbply and painted black. Keith Fenton pattern. While cutting these on the scroll saw I also had my CNC carving the flag. Flag carved from soft maple and sprayed with water based polyurethane and then spray painted black, sanded off overspray and top coated again with the poly.6 points -

I am a huge music fan, especially Bluegrass. I decided to do this Charles Dearing pattern, with a few minor variations, and it took me a bit longer to cut and finish it than I thought it would, but hey, it was Covid time so it doesn’t really matter. I am sometimes having a tough time staying focused on the task at hand, which is definitely not my norm. A lot of Bluegrass songs feature the word “breakdown” (i.e.Foggy Mountain Breakdown), so I decided to call my version of this, “Covid Breakdown.” As is my norm, it is pretty small at 8 1/2”x 6,” and was mainly cut with Pegas 2/0 and #1 spiral blades. I hope you all enjoy it.1 point

Another quick cut, probably 6 hours total in the project. I wanted to give a tip from Steve Good's newsletter a try. He'd written about another scroller who wrote in to him and said that he (the other scroller) gave the back of each of his projects a quick spritz with rattlecan shellac before applying the pattern and drilling pilot holes, and the shellac helped to keep the fuzzies to a minimum regardless of whether a reverse-tooth blade was used or not. I decided to give it a try. A quick spray (ProTip: when spraying outside, pay attention to the direction of errant wind gusts. Took me a couple of days to clean off my glasses.), let it dry, flipped it over and taped/glued the pattern. I used a spiral blade for some of the cuts (still not a fan of them, they're handy but my ability to draw a straight line is...um...nonexistent) and a straight blade for the vast majority, and dang if it doesn't work! There were fuzzies, but they were tiny and rigid/brittle and most disappeared with a quick pass of some 220-grit on a palm sander. I think I'll be using this trick from now on.1 point -

Wife is redoing my son's room and I decided to make trinkets for it. The paint color of his room is Suddenly Starfire. Which gor me thinking Teen Titans and the next pattern was a fish in the workbook. Some tweak, some color, and... Beast Boy as a Fish Number 3 blade with some picket wood. Inspired by the Gwinnett folks on Youtube. Craig of the Creek pop out picture. Done with a 2/0 which honestly didn't really like using. I do wonder if I should put a clear coat on this as it is a printed picture.1 point -

In my previous post under Scrollers Q&A about preparing wood before painting, in his reply Dave Monk included a pic of his cut from this pattern by Jenevski that can be found in the SVV Patterns Library. It kind of jumped out at me, and since Eagles is my favorite subject, I just had to cut it. The cut panel is 5/32” x 11” x 14” Solid Core Birch plywood which I affixed to a 1/4” x 12” x 15” BB ply backer. Cutting was completed with a Pegas #0 spiral blade. Coloring of the backer was completed a little different for this project. I did prep the panel with a sealer and then used Krylon Spray Paint with Primer to paint the Red, Blue and Gold. I did use a lot of blue painters tape to mask off the various areas so I could paint each color. Of course, after all painting and assembly was completed I protected the panel with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Lacquer. The frame is 1 3/4” wide Poplar that I added a store bought decorative bead detail available from Lowes. After prepping the frame with a pre-stain the frame was stained with Minwax Water Based Semi Transparent Royal Pine (Blue) stain and then finished with a coating of Minwax Water Based Polycrylic Clear Satin Protective Finish.1 point -

I just downloaded a program by the name of Silhouette. It's for a machine similar to a Cricut, but I think it could be used for pattern making/altering or ??? Are there any users here and if so, what is your honest take on it? I haven't messed with it yet but am about to.1 point

Hey Ray, I was going to look for some of those paper cutters /Inkscape tutorials and info. and found this site that I had forgotten about that lets you convert Silhouette Studio files to SVG files It limits you to making 10 conversions per day and it notes that there could be some errors in the file conversions but I know that many use it and it has been out and available (for free) for several years now so for the most part I think it is a fairly solid tool. http://ideas-r-us-software.uk/FileConverters/SilhouetteStudioConverter.aspx1 point

Yes, you can use it to trace - the problem is getting it out of their software. You cannot save to anything but their proprietary file format in their free program so if you want it in another program, you need the ability to save it to an SVG file which requires the purchase of their "Business Edition" for the $100 to do that. That said - if it works to help you learn the basics of tracing and such that you can incorporate that knowledge into figuring out how to use Inkscape then its a win for you that way. Many of the cutter programs and such work in similar ways but sometimes call them something slightly different. You could also use a "screen capture" once you got something the way you wanted it and just wanted to "print" the image for cutting. There are some other work arounds like that with many things. Glad you found it useful for you. I will tell you that many of those who use the electronic paper cutters also use Inkscape and I know many of them have done tutorials/videos on how to use Inkscape. Scrolling and cutting with a die cutter are very similar in the file images needed so using files designed for paper cutting can give you a lot of options. I did the same as a paper cutter before I scrolled, I often found scrolling patterns and converted them for use with my electronic paper cutter.1 point

That's why I have so many double tools and things. Went to Harbor Freight and saw a push stick for a table saw for 99 cents. I can use that so I bought it. Then found two just like it at home. Sometimes I just buy something without thinking. Old age I guess.1 point -
Ray, you are correct in that it is software. For a cutter line similar to the Cricut brand of cutters used by paper crafters. If you downloaded their “free” version you are not going to be able to do much with it other then use it to access. Their online store to download files for cutting which use a proprietary format for the most part. They have an upgraded version you can purchase that will let you work with and create SVG files that can be used outside of using with their cutter. I have had and used the electronic paper cutters and their programs many years now. I have used most all of them. For scrollers, the silhouette program is really not a great option probably. There are other 3rd party software programs used with the cutters that are better, especially for scrollers. One is no longer updated or supported but was probably the best and what drove the usage and standardized use of .svg files with many cutters. The other is still available and could be used by scrollers (I have and use them both.) However, they do cost some money. For most of what you might want to do, you would probably be able to save money and just learn the basics of a Inkscape which as you know is free. If I can help in anyway with that or the cutter programs I am happy to try. I will confess that I haven’t looked at the Silhouette software it’s self in a long time as I found other programs were better and more suited to my needs and was not interested in buying paper cutting patterns from their store. I do however participate and review regularly groups and forums for paper crafters with the electronic cutters so I do feel that I still have a good base knowledge on most of those.1 point

Thank you. I counted yesterday and there's 39 portraits on my walls now. Ready to switch to something else for a while I think. Great to have a hobby with so much possible diversity isn't it?1 point

I was worried about that and had the full 110mm on both spots. Not a problem. When that got cut down a bit still not having an issue. Now I am having an issue with the blade slipping out occasionally I need to figure out. I think the surfaces just need roughed up.1 point

I had bought red Loctite and didn't originally use it. I ended up using Red Loctite on the top handle today as it unscrewed. The bottom is just as solid where it connects to the rod. I have to say Red Loctite is a pretty red.0 points
