    What's Up Cupcake?

Here's a wife inspired project. She recently got an order for a wedding cake and cupcakes and I remembered this Steve Good pattern. 25 inches tall - tiers are 17/13/9 inches in diameter. 1/2 inch plywood from Woodcraft with one 15oz. spray can of gloss white Spent more time in prep and finishing work as I did cutting it out. holds about 38 cupcakes. The hardest part was waiting for the paint to completely dry.

  3. Seems to me like I spend a lot of time in my shop, but get very little finished.... Well I did finish one yesterday. It is another Fiona Kingdon pattern. Called "Foliate Crucifix". Cut in maple, 10" in diameter 1/2" thick. Finish is dipped in BLO/MS then sprayed with 4 coats of Deft satin lacquer.

Well, three weeks after breaking my arm I have enough mobility to get some work done. Won't be working on the Mandala's for awhile though. This was a custom order that I got just before I broke my arm. 1/2" bb ply with 1/4" backer. I don't remember the font but it was a part of the Windows list at the office. Glad I was able to get it done. I need to put one more coat of oil on it before passing it to the customer.

  6. Well I havnt been online all week and you can see why. Having so much fun learning how to scroll saw and trying to do new things and using inkscape to create the dog heart leash hanger. I am addicted no stopping me now. I havnt even brocken a blade yet lol. The dog leash with the wood burning text and the Gnome are from Steve Good designs

  7. I had made this several years ago by following the instruction in the pattern. The one on the left is made according to the pattern. The wife kept complaining that it was hard to dust. The one on the right is a new version which I just finished the other day. It is cut from 1/8" birch as was the original. I used diluted acrylic craft paints for the stain to color all the parts. The frame is just 3/4" white pine with glass to protect the piece.

  9. I seem to have blinkers on at the moment, if it's not a box I don't see it, it might have something to do with the amount of 1 1/2" inch mahogany and 2" Oak I've had given me, they lend well to boxes lol, this one is mahogany top and bottom, Oak for the draw and Maple for the inlay, it is 2 inches high and 5 inch wide, the draw is 1 and a half inches high by 1 inch wide, Steve's pattern was for a glued on humming bird and flowers, but I altered it to an inlayed one, disappointed slightly with the birds tail, but as long as you don't all look at the original pattern I might just get away with it LOL

A project finished Monday. This is a Steve Good pattern. I used 1/4" solid Walnut and backed with 3/8" Baltic Birch plywood. I used 3/8" so that it would hold the hanger without going through the wood. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using #1R MGT blades on all interior cuts and #3R on the exterior cuts. The finish is one coat spray Shellac as a sanding sealer. Then two coats MinWax Lacquer Clear Satin, sanding in between coats. I should have used 1/8" so that the white would show through the Walnut. 150 holes. Comments welcome.

  12. Thanks to @don in brooklin on here is the first cut of a commissioned piece. Cut from 13/16" Poplar, Pegas MG #3 used blade ( had about 5 puzzle cuts on the blade Still needs sanding and finishing which I'll post in a few days. Laying flat: It's going to be a wall hanger (keys, hats etc.) so here it is in it's base: Base is also Poplar but opted for a darker gran to have the top "pop" on the wall I'll post the finished product in a few days - should be ready by Friday Evening (it's Tuesday morn) Finished Piece Thanks as always in advance

  15. From the picture it looks like there is some spalting going on. I would not go too detailed on those slices as the detail will be lost.

  17. I think wild life would good Eagle, Deer, that sort of thing. The one(s) that are 1 3/4" thick, I wouldn't go to a pattern that has extreme detail in it. At that thickness it can be hard to get it to look right.

    Covid Breakdown

I am a huge music fan, especially Bluegrass. I decided to do this Charles Dearing pattern, with a few minor variations, and it took me a bit longer to cut and finish it than I thought it would, but hey, it was Covid time so it doesn’t really matter. I am sometimes having a tough time staying focused on the task at hand, which is definitely not my norm. A lot of Bluegrass songs feature the word “breakdown” (i.e.Foggy Mountain Breakdown), so I decided to call my version of this, “Covid Breakdown.” As is my norm, it is pretty small at 8 1/2”x 6,” and was mainly cut with Pegas 2/0 and #1 spiral blades. I hope you all enjoy it.

  22. I've been given some timber (again), most is PAR but there was four wood slices amongst it, I was told it's oak but not 100% certain, the slices are between 7 & 9 inches across and 1 to 1 3/4 inch thick, now the rub what to do with them ?, I've thought of a nativity but it's wrong time of year, but after that I'm struggling for ideas, I've added a picture so you can see them, the marks on them are not splits and they are dry ready to saw, so ladies and gents any ideas or pattern suggestions would be appreciated P.S. I forgot to add they have bark on

  33. Wildlife is sounding a good idea, I will sand the surfaces down the next time I get in the shed, on the wildlife theme I might try a stags head on one of them, that leaves three more

  44. Boxes are great projects and you did a wonderful with this one. I understand about having blinders on when looking for projects. I'm kinda into a rut with coloring portraits of "Birds". I really do like inlay work, but just havn't gotten up the nerve to try it yet. But it on my to do list. Again, very nice work.

    Marquetry

John, thank you for the update.... Since I started this thread, feel bad the I have not worked hard to keep this active. My problem is, so many projects in wood working I want to accomplish that it is really hard for me to focus on one and become proficient at it... Example, I have three projects currently active and finding it hard to stay focused on one to finish before I start the next,, part of getting old,,, having so many interests that you want to try,,, and you know time is running out!! Anyway, I did rejoin the Marquetry Society after I started this thread... If nothing else,, I enjoy their news letters, and it seems like they are working hard to keep the society going... You are aware there is a chapter in Washington over on the coast.... Not that horribly far from you... Also,,, When/before, this covid BS hit I made several trips to Portland a year,,, my daughter and her family live there... If we get back to normal in this country,,,, maybe we could meet somewhere between, some time and you could teach me something and let me see some of your wor, now that would be a challenge,, to teach me,,, wow... Also @Travis lives in the Vancouver area,,, I feel I owe him a lunch, but don't remember why, and I would like to pay my debt,,, it would be great if the three of us could some way meet up. Let me tell you, meeting and talking with people that have the same interests is pretty amazing.. and awesomely (that a word) fun... I have done it with @heppnerguy and @scrollingforsanity, and we keep in touch with phone calls and email... Some of my most cherished friendships.. Is the leaf marquetry from "The Wood Whisperer"? I remember watching one of his videos and he did a leaf like that.. And I rattle on,,,,, again thanks for the update.... Not sure "zoom" will work on my desktop Mac Mini, but I will look into it. May have to dig my wife's old shattered Ipad out of the garbage and use it... She will no let me touch her brand new one.. Thanks, again, John,, please keep posting about marquetry.... gets me pumped up!!
