  1. Seems to me like I spend a lot of time in my shop, but get very little finished.... Well I did finish one yesterday. It is another Fiona Kingdon pattern. Called "Foliate Crucifix". Cut in maple, 10" in diameter 1/2" thick. Finish is dipped in BLO/MS then sprayed with 4 coats of Deft satin lacquer.

  2. Well I havnt been online all week and you can see why. Having so much fun learning how to scroll saw and trying to do new things and using inkscape to create the dog heart leash hanger. I am addicted no stopping me now. I havnt even brocken a blade yet lol. The dog leash with the wood burning text and the Gnome are from Steve Good designs

  3. I seem to have blinkers on at the moment, if it's not a box I don't see it, it might have something to do with the amount of 1 1/2" inch mahogany and 2" Oak I've had given me, they lend well to boxes lol, this one is mahogany top and bottom, Oak for the draw and Maple for the inlay, it is 2 inches high and 5 inch wide, the draw is 1 and a half inches high by 1 inch wide, Steve's pattern was for a glued on humming bird and flowers, but I altered it to an inlayed one, disappointed slightly with the birds tail, but as long as you don't all look at the original pattern I might just get away with it LOL

  4. Has anyone done bowls from wood slices?. Angle cut and still have bark on top of the rim. I thought about this 2 nights ago.

  5. I had made this several years ago by following the instruction in the pattern. The one on the left is made according to the pattern. The wife kept complaining that it was hard to dust. The one on the right is a new version which I just finished the other day. It is cut from 1/8" birch as was the original. I used diluted acrylic craft paints for the stain to color all the parts. The frame is just 3/4" white pine with glass to protect the piece.

Well, three weeks after breaking my arm I have enough mobility to get some work done. Won't be working on the Mandala's for awhile though. This was a custom order that I got just before I broke my arm. 1/2" bb ply with 1/4" backer. I don't remember the font but it was a part of the Windows list at the office. Glad I was able to get it done. I need to put one more coat of oil on it before passing it to the customer.

  8. Considering the spalting on the wood, be careful to not breathe the dust from sanding them. The markings are caused by a fungus, and the dust might not be too healthy. Be sure to wear dust protection and maybe go outside in a breeze. Tom

  9. Welcome to the village. Most scroll saws can handle 3/4" wood. Pine is a soft wood and full of resins which can and will clog the gullets in the blades. I would us a #5 or #7 skip tooth blade and cut them slower so it can clear the saw dust from the blade. Just a thought.

    What's Up Cupcake?

Here's a wife inspired project. She recently got an order for a wedding cake and cupcakes and I remembered this Steve Good pattern. 25 inches tall - tiers are 17/13/9 inches in diameter. 1/2 inch plywood from Woodcraft with one 15oz. spray can of gloss white Spent more time in prep and finishing work as I did cutting it out. holds about 38 cupcakes. The hardest part was waiting for the paint to completely dry.

A project finished Monday. This is a Steve Good pattern. I used 1/4" solid Walnut and backed with 3/8" Baltic Birch plywood. I used 3/8" so that it would hold the hanger without going through the wood. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using #1R MGT blades on all interior cuts and #3R on the exterior cuts. The finish is one coat spray Shellac as a sanding sealer. Then two coats MinWax Lacquer Clear Satin, sanding in between coats. I should have used 1/8" so that the white would show through the Walnut. 150 holes. Comments welcome.

  20. A couple of months ago my daughters friend asked for a Dale Cooper portrait, so I asked for help and Mahendra kindly obliged but could not do a pattern of the picture she wanted but did one of an alternative photo. Any way the girl was moving at the time and a lot of things went wrong for her so while we were waiting my daughter started messing around to see if she could make a pattern and low and behold she did. I had to do a bit of tinkering to get it cuttable but hey she loved it. She got the finished piece yesterday and she was over the moon with it. So thank you to Mahendra @multitom for going to the trouble of trying to help me. This was cut from 2.5mm bamboo and is an A3 ( 11.7" x 16.5" ) and the frame is store brought. Marg

  23. I might be thinking outside the box, but I have some that are drying right now that I intend to make clocks and tables. The clocks will be routed in the center and pour self leveling epoxy resin for a finish. That is what I plan to do.

  29. Thanks for the comments. @ FrankEV, I did burn the details on one of them as a sample. I created 3 of each design and I will leave it up to my Grand Daughter to give them out. She can write the details on the back if she wishes. I could load them into the Laser Engraving machine I have and do them there but I think it would be nicer hand done. Don W

  37. I'm not familiar with this saw or the whole shopsmith machine. I'm thinking that since the saw was designed this way and later modified by the manufacturer that they may have made other changes to compensate for changing the blade holder. 25 inches of arm is pretty long and the further out you travel from the pivot point the more the weight ratio would change. May not notice anything immediately but you could add a balance issue . That would add more vibration.

I’m assuming this is site @Bpardue Brian is referring to. https://www.richardscraftwood.com I plan to check it out since it would not be too far from me here in East Tn which means wouldn’t take long to get package.
