  1. Im am feeling really pleased with myself. Someone asked me if I can make them a Staffie dog leash hanger. I told her im only a learner in scroll sawing but I will try. So this is what I created using Inkscape her 2 Staffie dogs. One of her dogs is black and the other is a silver blue grey colour. Customer is over the moon. The customer is going to put her own hooks on it to hang the dog leashes on. In the photo I have it laying on a large plate

  2. Instead of complaining and threatening to not renew, why not write or send an email to Fox Chapel what you would like to see more of and less of? This is the only way they will know what you want!

  4. I am sorry you were disappointed. I got my issue today and we must have seen things differently, as I would not have said it was “focused on one subject.” I am not even sure what “subject” that would be referring to. Maybe, “nautical” as there were several related to that but many others not. I thought there was a good variety of different types of projects. While I may not undertake them all, and not all necessarily appealed to me right now, I am sure there are things that will appeal to many others. There are so many aspects and areas to scrolling now that it would be difficult to always appeal to everyone with everything I would suspect. I do however usually find at least a couple projects I like in each issue. I am sorry you did not.

  5. I stopped my renewal about 10 years ago.. I've often thought about re-subscribing.. over the last couple of years, more so for just supporting the magazine.. Even in the prime of magazines I rarely used a pattern from them.. as I always hated the way they lay the designs out on the huge paper then you have to crinkle it folding it up to fit into a scanner etc. Then scanning another pattern from the same sheet you have a crinkled up paper.. just never made any sense to me the way they do it.. BUT anyway.. it is nice reading material etc.. and could be gone if everyone was to drop it for the online clubs/ groups / pages.. etc.

  7. Well, there are a lot of great pattern designers here and that is what you guys want. Why not have this community support the magazine by submitting patterns? Yes that is a hint to some (Alex Fox comes to mind), but there are many others. If the magazine is still around when I have more time maybe I'll submits some patterns.

  8. I agree about the patterns sheets, and I also agree about contacting them which I did several yrs, ago when I was a member. They did not listen, I was complaining about the pattern sheets, I found nothing wrong with the Articles, they were Great.

    Forever Young

I love Rod Stewart's song Forever Young and thought these lyrics go well with this picture. May our children and grandchildren know this is true of how we feel about them.

  11. Imagine how many subscribers they'd get if the internet disappeared suddenly... we wouldn't have all these forums / groups to get access to patterns and many folks would depend upon a magazine and pattern books. I've been saying this since around 2005... They really should be focusing on a electronic / online version of the magazine..

  12. Guys in my CNC groups use Oramask.. It's used for painting.. ie sand your blank and top coat with clear sealer of choice such as shellac or poly.. place the oramask on then carve the piece on the CNC. Once carved you paint the carved out area. without having to worry so much about getting paint where it isn't supposed to be painted.. then peel off the oramask. I'm not sure what the material is made of.. but I tried using shelf liner instead of the oramask as a cheaper product. But the CNC sort of shreds the edges of the shelf liner and also the paint softens the liner to create a large mess, LOL The oramask could be used in place of the shelf liner if you like paying more for products.. Also heard complaints about the oramask removal is hard as it sticks very well.. We used the stuff in the autobody world for custom graphic paint jobs like flames etc.. Good stuff but pricey. The scroll saw stick and release tape sounds interesting, but again.. seems a bit pricey considering the shelf liner is like $5-6 a roll.. and I want to say those rolls are longer that the 20ft. scroll saw tape stuff is.. I don't have issues removing the shelf liner when using the full sheet shipping labels.. but it is more difficult for sure when using spray glues.. Maybe if you are set on using the spray glues.. Oramask may be a better option or the scroll saw tape. I just know that the oramask holds up well with some pretty potent chemicals.. Then again.. it sticks well to so removal might be worst than the removal of some of those very sticky shelf liners.. Again, only time I have had issues with removal of shelf liner is when I use the spray glues.. Possibly need to let the spray glue dry out more on my pattern before placing it on the liner covered wood blank.. Maybe that's my issue..

    Shelf Liner Observation

The sewing tool will perforate your pattern and put pin holes in your wood. The only time I touch my original pattern is when I scan it. From there I can scale, edit (which I do frequently) and print as many copies as I need, especially when doing Intarsia.

  14. I admit that I have recently decided not to renew my subscription. I've been getting the magazine for many years, but over the past couple, I'm finding fewer & fewer projects that interest me. I don't blame the magazine. They know what they are up against these days and are doing their best to stay relevant. I figure if they added more content that interested me, it would mean that something else got sacrificed and then someone else would be unhappy and dropping their subscription. One of the key points in all this, is that scrolling has become a much more diverse hobby, with regard to the projects that are available to us. Years ago, traditional fretwork dominated the magazines. Then we saw more of the portrait style patterns, as they grew in popularity. Now there are all sorts of different styles and patterns, stuff we never imagined 15-20 years ago. In the grand scheme of things, I think this is good for most everyone. The fact that it has passed me by is more a testament to the limitations of my tastes and interests. I hold no ill will toward the publishers of the magazine and wish them well. Publishing printed material is really tough these days and getting much tougher. I don't see that changing. I'll miss getting new issues, but probably not as much as I should.

  15. I have always gotten mine at Lowe's or Walmart. They are the cheapest sources I have found. Price is under $10 a can and a can lasts me 6 months or more. I have not looked in the last 6 months.

  16. Really a 55 gallon drum? Just thinking of all the fun pranks I could pull if I had a drum of that stuff.. Thinking the spray cans would last longer than the drum for me..

  19. Yea I have always traced,I know it takes a little more time, but it saves a lot of patterns. I have some pattern's in my files that I have had for years, without ever having to make a copy of it. At least not yet.

  21. Spray adhesive by 3M is getting scarce and expensive in addition to being messy. I am going to try the full sheet labels that Kevin talks about.

  24. Some guy at my work is leaving. So I made him a farewell gift. The D and S are the logo. Attached are two pics. The tiny logos are my first attempt at angled cut for easy inlay. The purple heart should have dropped into the brown wood. But it didn't go all the way down. So I filed sanded until it fit. I had a setting of 1.8 deg angle. I should have accounted for 2x the blade thickness. The purple heart was 1/16th inch less thickness (1/2 vs 9/16.). So i played with fitting the brown wood into the purple heart hole. Ok I knew it would have gaps. I could put I could put a led light behind it and hilight the S. Also I can enhance the S by leaving the 1/16" above the D... I think that is called "relief". Anyway I was playing. The 2 big pieces I did not use angled cut. So I planned on making the inverse coloring. Why waste wood? On the boxes, they came out ok. One was better than the other. Both are acceptable. I will add 3 tiny magnets to hold the top on. Also I need to add semi-gloss finish. Maybe 4 coats. The tiny logos have Satin finish 3 coats. Mark.

That is so beautiful. The high contrast from edges to white background make it stand out. Therefor the edges have to be perfect. And they ARE. !!! Beautiful.

  32. Believe it or not.. Inflation.. We are seeing many many things taking huge price increases.. They are saying it's because of shortages and supply / demand.. But lumber specifically OSB and some building materials are through the roof.. I see the place I buy my BBply says.. "Call for pricing" I think if you all need some BBply and can find it at your usual prices.. Now might be a good time to stock up.. Also.. Danish Oil is scarce I haven't seen a price hike yet but I believe it's coming.. I like to buy it by the gallon.. can't find gallons anywhere.. I finally broke down and bought a couple quarts on Monday to get me by for a little while.. I've seen on some websites that the gallons are expected to be in stock ( I think ) April 19th?

  34. 3M 77 spray adhesive in the 16 oz can has been out of stock in my local big box stores for a while. Yesterday it was out of stock on Amazon but today is available for $22.64, much higher than last time I bought it. Does anyone know what the issue might be?

  35. This product came up in a different feed. http://store.workshopsupply.com/catalogue/scroll-saw-stick-and-release-tape-12-20-p-4418.html. I just tried the link for amazon but it apparently is sold out so I don't know what the price is. I was thinking of trying it from Workshop Supply but the shipping on the smaller roll was more than the roll itself. Have to wait a bit to order other things as well!
