  1. Here is a Tiger I just finished. My daughter goes to the University of Memphis. Their mascot is a tiger and the school colors are blue and gray. That is why I painted the backer blue with a gray border. These colors appear to match the University colors pretty close. I used 1/4" maple plywood and cut most of it with a spiral blade. For the straight sections I switched blades to a straight one so I could cut a straighter line. Believe it or not, I did not break any of the whiskers when cutting. I saved them for almost last and had dreaded cutting them the whole time I was working in it. I made sure I had a fresh blade to reduce pressure in an attempt to not break the thin wood, and I got really, really lucky. The frame is maple that is stained Red Oak and sprayed with lacquer. The overall size with the frame is 17x20". The pattern is from Alex Fox and it said there are 447 holes. I'm not sure there are that many holes but I have not counted.

  3. Im am feeling really pleased with myself. Someone asked me if I can make them a Staffie dog leash hanger. I told her im only a learner in scroll sawing but I will try. So this is what I created using Inkscape her 2 Staffie dogs. One of her dogs is black and the other is a silver blue grey colour. Customer is over the moon. The customer is going to put her own hooks on it to hang the dog leashes on. In the photo I have it laying on a large plate

    Sign for my shop.

In between projects and looking for something different I decided to make a sign to hang on the outside of my little shop. Found a S. Good fretwork Welcome sign pattern that I used but changed the wording. Panel is 1/4” x 12” x 15” Walnut Solid Core Plywood and affixed to a 1/2" sanded plywood backer. I deepened the contrast by staining the panel with multiple coats of Minwax Walnut Stain. The script is called "Handwritten" that I have individual .svg files for each letter in upper and lower case. All cutting was done with Pegas #0 and #1 spiral blades. The panel is glued into a 3/4” wide Poplar frame that I rounded over on the Router and made a 1/4” wide x 3/4” deep rabbet to match the panel depth. I stained the frame with Minwax Honey Maple. After fully assembled, the sign was protected for outdoor use with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Polyurethane spray.

  5. I was giving mine to a couple sisters for their horses. Can't use walnut, poison to the animals. I do keep some of different species for minor repairs etc. The rest now goes to a local mechanics shop for soaking up oil and stuff.

  6. Anyone else saving their sawdust in case they need to glue it all back up for making more boards.. The price of lumber is making me think the saw dust in my dust collector is probably worth more than the projects I'm making, LOL I read on FB that the reason for the price hikes is due to Covid and the mills only running half capacity.. Not sure how true that is.. I'm just thankful to have enough lumber on hand to get me through about a year + Also thankful I bought 20 sheets of BB ply right before the prices started creeping upwards.. though I wish I'd have bought some other sizes besides the 1/8" thick.. Now that I'm messing with the CNC a little.. but maybe the prices will keep me pushed back on running it much.. Don't take long to create a lot of scrap on that thing since I barely know what I'm doing, and with the prices of wood, I can't afford scrapping anything.. Might not be long before I'm weighing and bagging up my fine gold dust ( sawdust ) into small baggies and selling it.. On a more serious note since I brought it up.. What do you guys do with your sawdust? I take my bags from the DC to my brothers sawmill and dump it into his sawdust pile.. since he sells the stuff to farms and landscapers etc.. Beats throwing it in the trash..

    Celtic projects

I like to make Celtic patterns - they have great 3D effect. Here is my new Celtic cross (top left) and my collection of Celtic projects Video of making Celtic cross Celtic patterns

  9. I put it in the Green Waste bin as well as wood scraps that will not be used. It gets shredded then composted.

  10. I use some of my dust when I glue patterns - I throw a few handfuls over the top of the board. Keeps the glue off my hands I also segregate my dust when I make stuff. When I cut a wood species, I save a bit of dust in spice jars. I sprinkle some on glued joints or glue broken pieces. Then I sand the brake/joint and glue section is usually not visible at all

    I experimented

I ran across a laser pattern and decided to give it a try. This is the prototype. Many lessons learned. The next one will be better. I used 5/16" b/bb that I had. Not the best stuff. Anyway, here it is.

    Fairy light

Finished this a few weeks back. Just got it to my daughter to hang in the soon expected granddaughters room. I like it better hanging than I did holding it.

  13. The Owl is cut out of 1/4" Oak and the easel (thank you flarud for the idea) was from an old piece of square pine, from a pipe boxing job, pattern for the Owl taken from a stencil that can be found at various shops on line P.S. 81/2" x 10"

  15. It would take a long time for me to collect enough sawdust just from scrolling to be of consern as to where to dispose of it. Small amounts of pure sawdust can be turned into gardens and will actually improve poor soils. However, since I do generate a lot of chips and much heavier sawdust from my router and tablesaw when ripping and profiling wood for frames I, like dgman, will also include it with the yard waste to be picked up by our waste removal service. Most of the wood scraps I generate will have glue and patterns still attached so they just go into the waste (garbage) bin for our weekly pickup. Now when I had my woodworking shop in NC and made furniture and did a lot of turnings, my collection system could fill up a heavy duty 40 gal garbage bag in just a matter of a few days or sometimes even just a few hours. I would keep Walnut out of the collector and the multiple bags of sawdust would go to a local Horse farm almost every week or so.

  23. HI everyone: I didn't mean to get anyone upset about what I said when I wanted to not renew. I can see there are things for some to make in there, but it sure has changed since the old days when there was some real content in there. I am glad I have most of the back issues to get patterns from and look at. Thanks Bill

  24. I don't do many of the patterns at all in the mag, but I do enjoy reading it in my private room LOL The articles aren't terrific, but I do enjoy seeing all the great things people have created There are so many talented people featured in that mag Every year I say no more, and then figure what the heck and re-up.

  25. I still enjoy getting a piece of mail, regardless of what it is. I spend time looking through it and have cut a few of the patterns. There are more in the "would like to cut" pile than "already cut". What I do find frustrating is that some of the patterns that are included are patterns that I had just purchased from the designer. I wish the designers would post patterns that are not available anywhere else.
