Thanks to Steve Good - Keychains
Tomanydogs and 10 others reacted to don in brooklin on for a topic
We in the Scroll Saw community are fortunate to have Steve Good. He generates countless patterns for free. I have cut many but today I was cutting a bunch of keychains for the staff at our local coffee shop and I realized how grateful I am to Steve for his Key chain program. For those who are new to scrolling or may not have seen the program it makes the most fantastic gifts. The link to the program is way down near the bottom of his daily blog at https://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/11 points -

A previous customer sent me a text-- "Bandit"-Cricket--Condor-Kodiak-&-Sweet Pea" ---- make up the stall signs for these horse names--ANY WAY YOU LIKE! I had made horse stall signs for them before. What a fun time this was. Lots of thinking- all designs are from T & E designs =--same source for the fonts. Woods are pine, cedar, fir, & some unknowns- the grips on the revolver are extremely hard, I have no idea of the species- color is just clear coated on them. Some thin plywood shop scraps, etc. Even used rawhide for the hanger on "Cricket". A lot of fun and a lot of work too. Customer has seen pictures of ""Bandit & Condor" only so far. "Bandit" even has turned parts! The pegs on "bandit" are used rifle cases. Many of the pegs on the others are golf tees that I buy in huge quantities for making key racks. Some light torching on some of the signs, then a quick poly spray over it.4 points

Hi guys and gals, I'm not sure if this the right forum for this question. I am looking for an airbrush kit to buy. I want to spruce up some of my scroll work. I would appreciate any any advice I could get. Am looking for something good but economical. Thanx in advance..............Forrest3 points

First, you need to know what you want to spray with your airbrush. There is also a skill issue. You are going to need to learn how to use it and practice. You will need to learn how to mix and filter your finishes. Each one is a bit different. You also have to clean and maintain your airbrush and associated equipment. Cheap airbrushes are throwaways. If you break something, and you will, you will soon discover that parts are difficult to find and may cost more than you paid for the airbrush. The tips are fragile. To try it out, get the Harbor Freight Airbrush Kit. The compressor will work ( I have one), and it comes with an airbrush. When it comes time to buy a new airbrush, buy a Badger. The Badger 155 Anthem is an excellent all-around airbrush that will spray anything you are likely to want to use. It's made in the USA, and parts are readily available. It has seals the will hold up to solvents which a lot of cheaper airbrushes will not. Lacquer thinner will eat the seals. It is my go to airbrush. I have a drawer full of cheap airbrushes. I also have six Badger airbrushes. I spray shellac and cheap acrylics, including house paint.3 points

I wanted to try to make a football bowl. So I made an oval about the same size as a football. Outer ring is about 11inches. I chose Myrtle for the wood. I wanted about 1/4 inch thick walls. So it comes out to 22.5 degrees angle. So I drilled the holes and cut the rings. Glued the rings together but left off the bottom. That way I could sand the inside of the bowl. I used a foam pipe cover to hold sandpaper easier. The outside was sanded with palm sander. After is was all glued up, I used butcher block conditioner which has Carnuba wax. Here is a youtube video that shows before oil and after oil. Here are pictures. I think it looks more like an egyptian boat.2 points

Using the tools was a tough as selling them Wayne. I spent many of my "off" hours chasing the flakes that ran out on me. It was the one part of the job that I hated but now that my son is in the business, everything has changed. Nobody can run anymore. Too many computers.1 point -
Ordered the saw 3-17, delivered 3-23. Under a week, holy cow!. Assembled and running on the 23rd. Finally had some time to start cutting test patterns. I didn't have the table squared to the blade, but fixed that tonight. One of the things I cut uses a sliding dovetail 1 1/2 inches thick, so I cut some test ones in material just under an inch. Stacked 3/16" 4 in the stack so 12/16". The curvy thing is a "sky hook" a balance toy to amuse the kids. Some pictures:1 point

Wayne, it's more than likely a Badger. S/O was famous for branding good stuff with their name. Not so much anymore.1 point -

Not sure who makes it. I have one with the Snap On name on it. It is a very brush, dual action and full adjustment and control.1 point -
That looks really nice. I can see the hours you put unto it. Looks like one of those patterns from that guy in Spain. "Finescrollsaw"1 point

I'm not sure what's available today, but many years ago I had a Badger compressor and air brush. They worked great for me. We painted toy banks with them. I made the banks on my scroll saw. As far as I know they are still in business.1 point

Congrats on your grandson joining the Navy. I did 20 years myself. Thanks for the nice words. To do this, its basically fretwork but instead of tossing the little waste pieces,. You collect them and keep them. Paint them and insert them, back into the piece. Glue it all to the backing. I mark them on the backs what color they need to be. The holes are right in the corners of the black outline so you need some small bits. I use #73 bits and a 2/0 jewelers blade. The pattern is pretty much what you see. i just print the pics out color and all and spray glue it to the wood and off I go. The hardest part is not losing the pieces. inevitably this will happen. Drives me nuts and i cant tell you how much time I spend crawling around on all fours looking for tiny pieces. lol1 point

My Grandson - just left for the NAVY today. I could not be more proud. This is truly a great one! I think I would love to make this for him so when he gets out of boot camp (at Great Lakes) It would be ready for him. I'm with Amazing Kevin, though. Man - your stuff is so perfect .. just wondering how ..1 point

Yes, by golly. We went to Home Depot and invested in 6 8 foot 2 x 4's. We're going to put them away until he graduates high school in 3 more years. They should cover college tuition by then.1 point

Nice Tip

Barb, I had seen that tip somewhere before but had forgotten all about it. Thanks for the reminder.1 point -
I am always obsessing over my finishes. My usual projects are bb and spray painted. Have been sanding and spraying 3 coats lately and its a decent finish. Been figuring the sanding between coats and what grits and what not. Got all fired up with some 600 grit at harbor freight for cheap but the coats were just too soft to work with when done. 320 seems about right. What i usually do is sand, then rub it off on my tee shirt then with my hand until no more dust is on the piece. Got to thinking there has to be a better way. Looked online and DIY tack cloth is just some spray glue on a paper towel and let it dry for about 4 minutes. Tried it today with my old method and then the new cloth and was shocked at home much more it picked up. Just sprayed another coat on my practice pieces so will see how they compare. So far this seems like a great idea and of course, cheap like me.1 point

I made the Steve Good penny drop game, lots of fun for the kids, had to dig up pennies though, that was tough, they were discontinued in Canada 9 years ago! Forgive my beginner scroll saw skills. First time doing inside cuts. I veneered the top of the box beforehand (should have veneered the back of that piece also).1 point

April Fool - Games and Puzzles Scroll Saw Challenge
tneilitz reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I have a game for two people that surprising looks really easy but in reality is quite fun and challenging, even if played with a new player. The squares are 1 inch by 1 inch, you can easily see what the other 4 pieces measurement are, just by looking at it. The four pieces are painted the same color on each side. the large colored pieces are placed With the large ends placed in the center of the board with the long parts both at the bottom of the board, facing away from each other and the black circles on the bottom corners. It starts out where the first person can make one move with the larger game pieces but cannot move the opponents piece, which, of course, would be the opposite colored game piece. The pieces can only be places on square that are free of the opponents piece and the two black circles. The after each move, the person has the choice to move one or both of the black circles to any open square, or he can elect to leave them lay as is. The person moving his larger game piece can leave it face up as it is when he picks it up or can elect to turn the piece over so that what was the bottom becomes the top. After that move, the opponent does the same thing with his piece with all the same electives of the previous player. ( these are choice with every move ) The object of the game is to position your piece so that the opponent has no where to place his game piece. sounds easy? Try it.1 point -
Project Workshop - New Feature!
OCtoolguy reacted to OzarkSawdust for a topic
Thank you so much Travis! These kinds of projects will be fantastic. I'm really looking forward to the design help! I have ideas for stuff, they float through my head rather quickly lol, but don't really know how to transfer them into a cuttable pattern. This new section will be an awesome help to me! Thanks again Travis! SSV is my favorite place on the web!1 point -
