Coffee Before Talkie and Locomotive
heppnerguy and 10 others reacted to TAIrving for a topic
Coffee Before Talkie is by request from my lady and will be hung in our kitchen. Thank you @WayneMahler for the pattern. It is 1/4" mahogany and is 16" square; I had to glue up 2 8" wide pieces. The locomotive is a Steve Good pattern and will be donated to our church for their upcoming fundraiser. I had to get out the big camera for this as I could not get the iPhone to correctly render the orange backing.11 points -
A couple of Baptism pieces
butch1008 and 8 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
In the Catholic church they perform baptisms on your children and babies. I have a great grandson that is getting baptized on my birthday, in Los Angeles. Several of our family members are going there for the event, including us. I wanted to find a plaque commemorating this event in James' life and looked to Sue Mey to see what she had to offer. I came up with this one and decided to also make this cross for his parents as well. I have not posted anything for some time, although I have made many things in my shop lately. So, here are two of pieces I made this week. Dick heppnerguy9 points -

Bought the pattern on Etsy and tweaked it a little. Also added the "3 little birds". He'll be living next to Willie. Figured they'll have something to talk about. 3/8" white oak with walnut backer. ***Richard commented below that I'm getting quite an array of celebrities in my collection. Wanted to share my reply so I can brag on my forth coming Hattian Grandkids. I am getting a fairly diverse collection of celebrities. I think 42 portraits now, some with several people in them. I noticed a few months ago that, unintentionally, all I had were white males. (Except for Aunt Bee in an Andy Griffith group ) I'm intentionally trying to diversify my collection in race and sex. I'm very excited that my son is adopting twins, a boy and a girl, from Haiti. I realized one day how my new grandchildren might feel if all they see is white men on my shop walls. Besides protecting their feelings, my shop is a happier place for it.7 points -

Here is neat little clock I finished about 2 months ago. I forgot to post it here. I made it from walnut and maple.I took the clock movement out to clean and vacuum it. I'll put it back together later today after I clean it. It has a neat little pendulum bob I made. I used 1/16". 1/4". and 3/8" wood. Mostly cut with an Olson 2/0 reverse tooth blade. It is called the "Black Forest Clock from Wildwood on the Cherry Tree web site. It has little critters scattered about. It is only about 18/19 inches high. I had fun making it.3 points

I've been wanting to do a Paul Simon for my shop and while browsing some images last night I ran across this concert poster from 1968 which had an almost ready to scroll image. I've got a snapshot memory of being in a pool in Panama City, Florida 50ish years ago and hearing Cecilia for the first time. I picked up some 1X5" X 18" quarter sawn white oak at an estate sale for $1 a board. I edge glued it for this and the Bob Marley portrait. Love me some cheap hardwood!3 points

Last year at my son's conferences the teacher talked about how he had gone to the same career center that he now teaches at, I mentioned that I also went there for auto collision repair. We started talking about cars etc. he was showing pictures of his Porsche that he restored.. I could tell he was really into his Porsche cars.. This year with Covid and all my son has helped a lot with the school both grade school and the career center school with computer tech stuff. He is in computer networking classes and does cyber security work and competitions etc. Anyway since I live out in the boonies we are limited for internet to slow DSL and with the wife working from home and son doing zoom classes etc.. so the teacher had given us some tech tips and a device that sped up the internet some. I made a clock of his car similar to this one as a thank you for a couple computer parts he gave me. ( I didn't get photos of the actual one ). Well I used the same pattern but I didn't like how the wheel wells blended with the body so I redid it and changed it around the wheels. My son took it to school today to give him. He open the box and was like "oh cool" then said I must have done that with a laser or something, my son said no he cut it by hand on a scroll saw. He didn't believe my son and actually took it to the construction class teacher and he said it was done on some sort of laser as well. LOL My son showed him my website and he told my son that I need to be charging a lot more money, LOL Tonight the phone rings and its the teacher.. He just had to say thanks but he really had to know how I made it. He still can't believe it was done on a scroll saw. He has a big Porsche meet tomorrow and he asked if he could take it and display it at the show and asked if he could make up some fliers with my website and email etc. My son sent him links to some of my videos on my yourtube of me cutting so he could see how it's done. Anyway, cut from Cherry as usual and used a #3 Pegas MG blade and a FD #2/0 spiral for widening some of the veining.2 points

It's killing me to not share this publicly so I decided to share it here. Thanks to the Help of Jessica Boehm for making a pattern from a photograph, I'm shipping my son's present overseas. He lives in Germany! So until he gets it, I can't brag publicly . So here it is!!! I'mm really happy how it came out!2 points

I would use magnets, HF has small powerful magnets about the size of a hearing aid battery. I would use two, opposite side and recess them. Put a recessed flat washer on the opposite side.2 points -
He made me a lot of money in my 401K, lets see if he can make me a little more money tomorrow at a market. LOL. I stacked cut 2, 1/8" BB ply with a 2/0 FD spiral. I'm starting to feel comfortable now with spirals, took a while though! I used 1/4" BB ply as the backers. Finished size is 11" x 14". Haven't set up at a market for a couple of years. Taking some pens and key chains made on the lathe and some scrollsaw items. Also some other items that I have been making. Btw, I posted this for your enjoyment and thoughts as a scrollsaw piece, not as a political piece.1 point

As I'm constantly making "Bowls-from-boards" I'm always having to drill holes at a 45° angle. I've made a couple of jigs, with limited success, but they are far from perfect. I have seen jigs & guides on the web (some thing like this - https://www.amazon.com/ANGLE-DRILL-GUIDE-increments-settings/dp/B006ZBCS1M ), but I wonder if they are more gadgets that work sometimes. Has anyone used anything like this, and, if so what are your recommendations? Or, is there a made jig that you have used with good success? I have some angle jigs that work very well, but, when you're drilling 35° or more, they fail. Any good recommendations?1 point

What Wayne described.... Rockler has plans for a tilting base to be added to a drill press. https://www.rockler.com/tilting-table-for-the-drill-press-plan Here's a simple drill guide that might be what you need https://www.amazon.com/Muzata-Installation-Horizontal-Drilling-Template/dp/B083Q8K2N5 You didn't say what size holes you needed. But when I work on tables and make those corner blocks that go between aprons and hold the legs I find forstner bits work much better drilling angled holes than your other types of bits.1 point

Can you use a drill press? Put a 45 degree, or whatever angle, wedge under your piece of wood and then drill straight down.1 point -

I recently purchased the plunge router base from StewMac. They had a sale on - two for one. It actually ended up being a little cheaper than buying just the plunge router base. The second piece was their tilting base. I haven't tried it yet. https://www.stewmac.com/luthier-tools-and-supplies/types-of-tools/routers-and-bits/stewmac-tilt-router-base.html1 point -

Another fretwork clock. Finished
ben2008 reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I love the fret clocks but they don't seem to have many people who wants one bad enough to pay for one. Everyone is amazed by them though. i just can't quite figure that out. Maybe their popularity is going in the direction of the grandfather clocks. They just aren't what they used to be, it seems Dick heppnerguy1 point -

Don't know if you saw this quote I posted from Sam Cooke but it sums up Dylan's music pretty well. "Cooke explained that from now on, it's not going to be about how pretty the voice is. It's going to be about believing that the voice is telling the truth."1 point

Yes, you can use your existing compressor. You will need an airbrush, hoses and adapters, a filter/regulator, a stand for holding your air when you put it down, and extra jars. There will be many other things that depend on how you work and what kind of finishes you use. Appropriate solvents and other cleaning supplies, for example.1 point

Has there been any explanation as to why the sudden high increase in the price of wood? I know everything is going up but it seems like wood has gone up faster by comparison. I'm going to start dumpster diving again. My wife is not happy.1 point

Bobby's pattern of Colonel Sherman T Potter
Alexander Fadeev reacted to Charlie E for a topic
I thoroughly enjoyed cutting @lawson56's excellent pattern. I used to watch MASH reruns on Sunday night after the news with my parents. Dad was a Southern Baptist Minister. I remember my dad said he preferred Colonel Potter to Colonel Blake because Blake was too silly to take seriously. Another memory was watching an episode where Hawkeye was about to leave in a jeep with Colonel Potter and was acting like they were taking off in a plane. He said, "Kick the chocks out from under the wheels. Flaps up! No offense Margret." My mom laughed. It may have been the only off color thing I ever heard her laugh at. I think it did me good.1 point -
