    Fret Box

Found a small fret box pattern I liked. Bubinga wood. Too small for hinges on the top so did a drop in top. Could not stack cut sides because they are too small. Shellac and lacquer finish.

    Simon & Garfunkel

I've been wanting to do a Paul Simon for my shop and while browsing some images last night I ran across this concert poster from 1968 which had an almost ready to scroll image. I've got a snapshot memory of being in a pool in Panama City, Florida 50ish years ago and hearing Cecilia for the first time. I picked up some 1X5" X 18" quarter sawn white oak at an estate sale for $1 a board. I edge glued it for this and the Bob Marley portrait. Love me some cheap hardwood!

I actually cut this a few years ago and never finished it because I didn't like it. Wrong size wood, chipped a lot, wood was soft, just a learning experience. Since I've been in the dog house all weekend, I saw it sitting there and decided to finish it. I think more of it now. I don't remember who's pattern it is or even the wood, I can tell you it's stain vintage blue, because I had a bunch of that and really want to get rid of it.

    Wolf Pup.

Finally got caught up on spring chores, so I got to spend some time in the shop. Cutting my own patterns is difficult though as I can always find things I should have done differently. Maybe I am my pown worst critic?

  5. Coffee Before Talkie is by request from my lady and will be hung in our kitchen. Thank you @WayneMahler for the pattern. It is 1/4" mahogany and is 16" square; I had to glue up 2 8" wide pieces. The locomotive is a Steve Good pattern and will be donated to our church for their upcoming fundraiser. I had to get out the big camera for this as I could not get the iPhone to correctly render the orange backing.

  6. Last year at my son's conferences the teacher talked about how he had gone to the same career center that he now teaches at, I mentioned that I also went there for auto collision repair. We started talking about cars etc. he was showing pictures of his Porsche that he restored.. I could tell he was really into his Porsche cars.. This year with Covid and all my son has helped a lot with the school both grade school and the career center school with computer tech stuff. He is in computer networking classes and does cyber security work and competitions etc. Anyway since I live out in the boonies we are limited for internet to slow DSL and with the wife working from home and son doing zoom classes etc.. so the teacher had given us some tech tips and a device that sped up the internet some. I made a clock of his car similar to this one as a thank you for a couple computer parts he gave me. ( I didn't get photos of the actual one ). Well I used the same pattern but I didn't like how the wheel wells blended with the body so I redid it and changed it around the wheels. My son took it to school today to give him. He open the box and was like "oh cool" then said I must have done that with a laser or something, my son said no he cut it by hand on a scroll saw. He didn't believe my son and actually took it to the construction class teacher and he said it was done on some sort of laser as well. LOL My son showed him my website and he told my son that I need to be charging a lot more money, LOL Tonight the phone rings and its the teacher.. He just had to say thanks but he really had to know how I made it. He still can't believe it was done on a scroll saw. He has a big Porsche meet tomorrow and he asked if he could take it and display it at the show and asked if he could make up some fliers with my website and email etc. My son sent him links to some of my videos on my yourtube of me cutting so he could see how it's done. Anyway, cut from Cherry as usual and used a #3 Pegas MG blade and a FD #2/0 spiral for widening some of the veining.

  7. Thanks to a suggestion by Wichman, my lantern can now be picked up by the top. I screwed two 3/8 inch washers into the bottom part and glued two 3/8 inch magnets into the top. In, theory each magnet can lift 5 pounds. I purchased the magnets at Lee Valley Tools.

    Co workers plaque

A co -worker left to go to another center on base so they asked me to make her a p!aque. She really liked it. Everyone that didn't realize I did this type of things were very impressed. I got to really show off some of my work.

  13. In the Catholic church they perform baptisms on your children and babies. I have a great grandson that is getting baptized on my birthday, in Los Angeles. Several of our family members are going there for the event, including us. I wanted to find a plaque commemorating this event in James' life and looked to Sue Mey to see what she had to offer. I came up with this one and decided to also make this cross for his parents as well. I have not posted anything for some time, although I have made many things in my shop lately. So, here are two of pieces I made this week. Dick heppnerguy

  14. Steve posted a pattern for this earlier this week. I made the "lantern" from 6mm Baltic Birch plywood which I cut using a #3 Flying Dutchman blade. The "candle" inside the lantern a battery powered. I have 6 such candles and will be making 5 more lanterns.

  16. Here is neat little clock I finished about 2 months ago. I forgot to post it here. I made it from walnut and maple.I took the clock movement out to clean and vacuum it. I'll put it back together later today after I clean it. It has a neat little pendulum bob I made. I used 1/16". 1/4". and 3/8" wood. Mostly cut with an Olson 2/0 reverse tooth blade. It is called the "Black Forest Clock from Wildwood on the Cherry Tree web site. It has little critters scattered about. It is only about 18/19 inches high. I had fun making it.

    Just stalling

A previous customer sent me a text-- "Bandit"-Cricket--Condor-Kodiak-&-Sweet Pea" ---- make up the stall signs for these horse names--ANY WAY YOU LIKE! I had made horse stall signs for them before. What a fun time this was. Lots of thinking- all designs are from T & E designs =--same source for the fonts. Woods are pine, cedar, fir, & some unknowns- the grips on the revolver are extremely hard, I have no idea of the species- color is just clear coated on them. Some thin plywood shop scraps, etc. Even used rawhide for the hanger on "Cricket". A lot of fun and a lot of work too. Customer has seen pictures of ""Bandit & Condor" only so far. "Bandit" even has turned parts! The pegs on "bandit" are used rifle cases. Many of the pegs on the others are golf tees that I buy in huge quantities for making key racks. Some light torching on some of the signs, then a quick poly spray over it.

  29. Just purchase a Dremel chuck and chuck it up in the big drill chuck. I can hold #80 bits in it. Have done it for years.
    1 point
  30. Let me clarify a bit. I have to use small bits I trey to use sizes between #50 - #57. The very largest I use is a 1/16" - sometimes a 1mm or 2mm. These bits are very short. The drill press chuck is big enough that it hits the wood before the hole is complete, when using the smaller bits. I have tried the jig from the video Jerry suggested - Thank you, Jerry. The issue with that one is that it covers the spot where I'm supposed to drill and the thickness of the jig prevented to small bits from completing the hole. Here is a couple of pictures of my current drill press jig, which works mostly. It's OK with a 1/16th" bit or the 1mm & 2mm. The smaller bits don't complete the hole before the chuck hits the wood. I have tried to find a smaller chuck, that I could clamp into the DP chuck, but I can't find on that holds drill bits less than 1/16th".

    Return to Venice

I recently did a Venice scene cutting and happened to be scrolling through Pinterest and found another scene I really liked and had more detailed. I especially like the Rialto Bridge in the back ground. Lots of very thin lines in this pattern and did some mods on the fly so things didn't break. I also did my paint fill in technique on some of the dark spaces to match the background.

  37. Can you use a drill press? Put a 45 degree, or whatever angle, wedge under your piece of wood and then drill straight down.

  38. Seems to me the deflection of the small diameter bit could be as much a problem as a good jig. Other than using very sharp bits, controlled feed speed and consistency in wood density, I don't really see the problem. LOL I'll be interested in how you finally solve your problem.

    Never got into the Laser thing. Will stick with Normal Scrolling for now. I do like the Looks of the Dolphins. And the Dice box reminded me of a game we played using dice. I made a smaller scale version of one that had the dice being thrown thru the top and would roll down on a Velvet board onto the base also velvet. YATZEE was the name of the game. Many games Enjoyed.....................Danny :+}

The Wet Bandits, aka Sticky Bandits. I'm grateful to Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern for 30 years of laughing as well as watching my children and grandchildren laugh at their work in the Home Alone movies Made this for my shop wall but I think I'll bring it in the house every December.
