I just received this big leaf figured Maple. Gorgeous stuff. Vendor is Daniel Zimmerman. He is often found on Facebook and on various groups. I purchased one box containing: 11 21X7-1/2X1/4" boards, 10 21X3-3/4" boards. $64 including shipping. Gorgeous wood. It is rough sawn. I don't own a planer or a large sander but is is smooth enough that my hand orbital sander will work. I had a nice DeWalt sander which was stolen. Consequence of keeping the garage door open. Now I have two HF sanders, a Bran and a Central Electric. One with 80 grit and the other with 220 grit. The combo works quite well. Daniel can be searched on Facebook. I can hardly wait to start scrolling it.9 points

Eagles have been one of my go to patterns since I started scrolling. However, birds in general has been my popular subject and makes up a large part of what I have completed. In fact, not shown yet, I just finished another Parrot cutting, but is still in the finishing and framing process. Edit 5/15, see added pic at bottom. Edit 5/15:3 points

This is not a picture of mine, but I have made three of these, two before I ever realy got into doing Scroll Saw work. Owned a Scroll Saw for many years. The first two feeders was the only projects I used it on when I was up in NC. Making the third after moving to Florida was what actualy got me interested in doing more scroll work, that was about 20 or so months ago. The one I currently have in my back yard looks like a bomb exploded in it as the squirrels tore it apart. Even so the birds love it when I remember to fill the tray with seed. We get Cardinals, Doves, Bluejays, all sorts of small brown birds, small Wood Peckers and Painted Buntings (I swore were small parrots or parrakeets...my ladey corrected me by showing me them in a book of birds we have.) The feeders were made of untreated 1/2" ply and painted with oil based enamel. However, even well painted they don't hoild up well in the elements, especially here in the florida sunshine...both the hot kind and the wet kind. I intend to remake it again and this time try to find some better wood, like maybe marine grade ply. (We have lots of boat building places around here.) Anyway the pattern was in SWW many moons ago. You can down load it here: https://scrollsawer.com/2011/05/04/victorian-birdfeeder/ Travis did say we can post aboth Bird house and Feeders also, so I took him up on his suggestion.2 points

Need help with a "pop out" problem...UPDATED
crupiea reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
Once in awhile (not often, about once in 30 units) after cutting a puzzle I get what I call a "pop out". What it is: I'm using Poplar and sometimes there is a very dark grain running inside. It's almost as if there were a fire during the life of the tree and this is a remnant of it. Anyway, it's not exactly a knot, but after I cut a small piece "pops out" of this blackened area. Sometimes the "pop out" is in the middle, which I can usually fill with filler or with glue and matching dust. However, sometimes the "pop out" is on the tip of the unit and I don't know how to fill it when that happens I've tried filler, glue with dust, putting the piece back in it's cut out to brace it before gluing or filling - I have yet to be able to fix one of these when it happens on the edge of a unit I use these units now as samples and they're marked so I don't sell them, but I would like to be able to fix them. Any suggestions other than treating them as firewood? Thanks as always in advance for reading1 point -
Quick sprayer question
OCtoolguy reacted to OzarkSawdust for a topic
What do you guys that spray stain or paint use? 1. Gravity feed air brush 2. Air brush that uses small bottles 3. Something like a Wagner Flexio 3000 HVLP type I want to spray some of my works in the future, but now I'm making a multi level plant stand for my wife. It's pine, from wood in the shop, so I'll use Minwax Pre Stain and spray American Walnut.1 point -

I'm thinking the only thing to use is an epoxy to fill the void. It may mean yu have to re-cut the area that you fill.1 point -
Beautiful wood. Also looking forward to see what you do with it. I don't own a planer either, but that is about to change. I have a birthday comming up and between my Lady and Daughter they asked what I wanted and I told them to get me the small Craftsman Planer that Lowes sells. It is a small bench top planer that I really do not have room for a permanent setup in my shop but will come up with a way of using it on a portable stand when needed. JUst have to find a suitabl place to store it in the meantime. I have access to Rough sawn lumber of various kinds but the cost to have it planed is high. I'll only be doing small pieces mainly to reduce rough sawn 3/4" material down to 1/2" or 1/4" or 1" down to 3/4" for frames, so I'm hoping the Craftsman unit will do the job.1 point

Yes they do - we sell a line specifically targeting young children as art projects - thing is we now get retirees buying them to keep themselves busy and nimble Also, at the time we did the 20k puzzle, we had a room set up just for puzzle making - this was way before I started woodworking and lived in Ca. The puzzle traveled with us from Ca to FL and made it in 10 sections - we lost 1 piece though during the move1 point -

For the Birds - Scroll Saw Challenge
danny reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
Like FrankEV, birds make up a large part of the scroll-lsawn work that I have done and, right now, I am just completing and framing another one. But, unlike him, I will only post the photo of one bird in this thread. I'm going to go away for a little while right now and figure out my favourite, then post it here. ... ... I'm back. My favourite is Brrrrdbath: I designed this based upon a serigraph by Charlie Harper. I used Baltic birch plywood for most of the the pieces and the backing. The snow pieces were cut from maple dowel and the water drops were fashioned by sanding down axel caps originally intended for use with wooden toys.1 point -

Frank this is beautiful. I have a copy of this image on Pinterest. I asked other scroll groups if they knew the origin and one person directed me to you. Do you still have the pattern of this? I would really like to have a copy of it. Gerard #otsgerard1 point -
pasted from a web search.... The strings are the largest family of instruments in the orchestra and they come in four sizes: the violin, which is the smallest, viola, cello, and the biggest, the double bass, sometimes called the contrabass. I think he shows more than 4 sizes. I only see 1 with strings. I guess he is not up on string theory as much as wood craftsmanship.1 point

Actually I was never 1% but patched with Church in The Wind, a biker church. As a result I rode with my pastor, an old biker from Southern California where he was in a club. He then left the life style and became a pastor. I had the privilege of associating with many 1%ers. Hells Angels, Bandidos, Valiants, Sons of Silence, Mongols and others. We were members of the COC, Confederation of Clubs and at their monthly meetings my church provided breakfast for them. Would ride to Mule Creek Junction, WY, about 100 miles South of Sturgis where I helped distribute as many as 20,000 bottles of cold water to bikers going to Sturgis. Gave assistance to bike wreck victims, Biker breakdowns, etc. Did this after I retired and had to quit riding in 2017 when I sold my ride. Old age gets in the way! Met a lot of people some of which became friends. Through it all I knew the tough 1%ers loyalty and brotherhood is crap. I still have lunch with several of them. When they get away from their club members they are pretty much like everyone else.1 point
