    Going Away Present

Alright SSV Nation, I haven’t posted much of my work lately, but thought this would be appropriate. It is a 20 MM aircraft gun barrel mounted on Bloodwood, which is the most dense wood I have ever played with). The mounts are Bubinga with inlays to the coins, patch and the nameplate. The nameplate is scrolled in Canarywood. I was so surprised to see a red streak within the Canarywood. Never seen it before. It is finished with Teak Oil. Feel free to ask questions. I totally enjoyed this.

My Mother's day gifts for the wife are delayed in shipping. Fortunately I had these pretty much ready to go. The patterns are from scrolleronline. Padauk, maple and walnut.

  6. Beautifully done. Hard to beat a Judy Gayle Roberts intarsia pattern to make. She has the best way to send her patterns to her customers. Your work is fabulous. Dick heppnerguy

  7. You also posted a nice variety of birds , all are done quite nicely too. I have cut some of these myself. My personal favorite is the little comical owl sitting on a branch. I have always loved this little fellow. Yours has a little more detail than the others ones I have seen and made but very similar otherwise Dick heppnerguy

  9. You’re right Dick I should have sanded the stem and added a leaf, wish I would have though of that at the time. Actually my daughter-in-law’s mother liked it so much she bought herself a scroll saw just to make the hummingbird. Now she makes a variety of things.

  10. There is a rather inexpensive spray gun called "the Criter" runs about $50 that will work on any type of paint , varnish, lacquer. It does not allow you to change the pattern of the spray but that will probably not be an issue. If you get the critter make certain it is with the stainless tube not the aluminum the latter will bend when dropped. It uses a pint size "Mason" jar. I use lacquer and keep one filled with lacquer the other with Acetone to clean the spray head when done. Darryl

  13. This hummingbird was one of my first projects, made for my daughter-in-law for her birthday. I found the image on line, but the stem was added my me and since I’m not very artistic the stem is not very appealing. I hollowed out a rock as the base.

    Three Amigos

This is another conversion of a ZM Creations Illustration I made into a Scroll Saw pattern. Just had to add another piece to my "birds". The cut panel is 5/32 x 11 x 15 Maple solid core ply affixed to a hand painted 1/4” x 11 x 15” BB ply backer. All cutting was completed with Pegas #0 Spiral blades. The backer was given a coat of Acrylic Gesso and then hand painted with Artist Acrylic paints. I used additional copies of the pattern that I cut out with an Exacto knife to help locate the areas to be painted the various colors. Of course as always, the assembled panel was finished with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Lacquer. My usual frame width is 1 3/4, but, because I messed up a cut and did not want to waste the wood, this frame is only 1 1/4” wide Poplar stained with Minwax Ebony and finish with multiple coats of Minwax Satin Wipe-On Poly. BTW, they are Parrots, if you had not figured that out!

  18. It depends on what I am painting. I have a drawer full and some paint guns. A gravity feed airbrush can use as little as a drop of paint at a time. They clean up easy so swapping colors is relatively quick. On the downside, if you need to see over the top of the airbrush, the cup can be a problem. Gravity feed airbrushes don't work well for covering large areas. They shine at detail work. Siphon feed airbrushes work best for covering larger areas with a single color. You can get large bottles for them. Bottles let you store unused finish. I find them more challenging to clean. They are not as good at details. As you go up in size, the ability to cover more significant areas increases, and the ability to paint finer details decreases. I cant imagine a scroll saw project that would require an HLVP gun. Looking at your intended use, I would recommend using a siphon feed airbrush with larger needle size. A Badger Anthem 155 would do the job. Badger makes a version of this airbrush that does both gravity and siphon-feed.

  25. I spray everything with lacquer. No more than I stain it's just as easy for my to use a brush. In the past I used to build a lot of big things and I sprayed them. It was messy as heck. I still had to wipe them off.

  29. In the past I've use both HVLP and LVLP For paints the HVLP works best for stains and finishes the LVLP works best I don't have an airbursh that others here have so can't comment on that I used this page for my original guidance in selecting:

  30. I would prefer to stay away from epoxy and re-cutting is not really option - I'm not good enough to duplicate a piece. I've tried and it's way out of my league.

  39. This is not a picture of mine, but I have made three of these, two before I ever realy got into doing Scroll Saw work. Owned a Scroll Saw for many years. The first two feeders was the only projects I used it on when I was up in NC. Making the third after moving to Florida was what actualy got me interested in doing more scroll work, that was about 20 or so months ago. The one I currently have in my back yard looks like a bomb exploded in it as the squirrels tore it apart. Even so the birds love it when I remember to fill the tray with seed. We get Cardinals, Doves, Bluejays, all sorts of small brown birds, small Wood Peckers and Painted Buntings (I swore were small parrots or parrakeets...my ladey corrected me by showing me them in a book of birds we have.) The feeders were made of untreated 1/2" ply and painted with oil based enamel. However, even well painted they don't hoild up well in the elements, especially here in the florida sunshine...both the hot kind and the wet kind. I intend to remake it again and this time try to find some better wood, like maybe marine grade ply. (We have lots of boat building places around here.) Anyway the pattern was in SWW many moons ago. You can down load it here: https://scrollsawer.com/2011/05/04/victorian-birdfeeder/ Travis did say we can post aboth Bird house and Feeders also, so I took him up on his suggestion.

  41. Eagles have been one of my go to patterns since I started scrolling. However, birds in general has been my popular subject and makes up a large part of what I have completed. In fact, not shown yet, I just finished another Parrot cutting, but is still in the finishing and framing process. Edit 5/15, see added pic at bottom. Edit 5/15:

  44. I have done some pretty intricate patterns over time, but I have to say this one was one that really tested me... I failed in a couple minor areas,,, but I will not point them out.... The hair, oh that hair, was very tense,, around the ear. Didn't help that the last BB I purchased was not very good quality... Almost didn't buy it but I was out, so thought some is better than none.. This is a Charles Dearing pattern. Just off the saw... will have to make a frame and put finish on it... A present for my son..
