These are Sue Mey patterns that I slightly modified. They both are about 13" wide by 10" tall. Cut from 1/8" BB ply with a 1/4" BB ply as the backer. Cut entirely with a FD spiral blade. I like the one with the black backer a bit better, it stands out a little better. I looked online for a western sunset that I could print out and use as a background but I didn't like the look of them as much as I liked the idea of them.7 points

1938 Lancia Astura
Alexander Fadeev and 3 others reacted to munzieb for a topic
1938 Lancia Astura Cabriolet Lancia is one of Italy’s oldest car companies being founded in 1907. The Lancia Company still exist in Turin and now is under the umbrella of Stellantis Auto Group which also includes Chrysler/Fiat, Citroen, Alpha Romeo, Maserati and Peugeot. The 1938 Lancia Astura was the epitome of the late Art Deco auto design period with its large flared front fenders and extensive use of chrome on the windshield and grill. The Tipo V-8 3-liter engine provided plenty of performance for either touring the Apian Way or along the shores of Lake Como in style and comfort. This model was only produced for 2 years with WWII disrupting car production for military purposes. I designed the pattern with MS 3D paint and used 1/8 BBPW with ¼” luan backer. Finish is shellac with Gloss lacquer.4 points -
Rich Mullins
Tomanydogs and 3 others reacted to Charlie E for a topic
One of my favorite Christian musicians ever, Rich Mullins. If you don't know him he wrote and sang songs you probably know including Awesome God. I love him because he was sort of a hot mess. He drank, smoked, cussed, didn't bath regularly. He also made millions of dollars and gave it away to charities and churches except for a small living allowance. He worked with Navajo children on a reservation. Sounds like a disciple, and I'll bet one of God's favorite sons. Cut in wormy walnut.4 points -

I bought a set of 10-Piece Mini Diamond Needle File Set (6" Total Length 150 Grit Diamond File) by Kalim from Amazon last fall and really like them. Don't seem to clog and are the right coarseness for me. Also bought a set for my daughter when she started scrolling.2 points

For dressing up fretwork and fontwork, I found that a good set of rotary carving tools that fit the Dremel Tool are the most handy. I've tried small files, sanding sicks and more, but none fit into this tight places that need some help. The rotary carving tools come in a veriety of shapes and the very small slightly tapered bit gets into all those very small tight places. The larger cylindar shaped bit is great for straightening those long straigt or long smooth curved cuts where the saw blade may have gone a little astray. So, whatever you planned to use the rasps for, the carving bits would work better and quicker.2 points

If it is like purple heart, it fades based on UV exposure. Purple heart is tricky. Fresh cut Purple heart can be a dull brown. after sanding too. But let it be exposed to sun and the purple will get brighter over a several days. Then you can put a UV clear coat. Look for brand general finishes UV protection.1 point

You are correct...dont know him. However, the likeness in the cutting is fabulous. Your rouges gallery is ever expanding!1 point

I sincerely thank you for the suggestion. Having had a clock repair business for over 40 years I have well over a hundred files of every size and description including sets of pattern, riffler, diamond, Barrett, bastard, mill, slotting, safe edge and more. I inherited many more from a gunsmith friend. I find what works on metal does not work very well on wood for me. I use small pattern files, cosmetic nail sanding sticks, rolled up sand paper and whatnot. I use a Dremel with brass and fiber bristles, sanding mop and 3M buffs. I have micro torches which I have not used as I cut 1/8" pre-finished BB and the finish will melt. The micro burrs will arrive Thursday. I'll see how satisfied I will be.1 point

I just searched "Carbide Burs for Dremel". A thousand wil come up. I bought the first one that came up. Most are al the same with a 1/8" shank. I think I just paid about $10. Probably an assortment of a dozen tiny burrs. Being old and computer deficient I'm not sure how to post a link. Probably to old to learn also.1 point

The Zebra wood was probably not the best choice, at all. It kind of camouflaged the image. The Tung oil made it worse because it brought the dark out and hid the image even more. It was also way too expensive. $21 for that piece. Lesson learned and now I love it even more. It came out exactly as it wasn't supposed to. Now I might fill it with am amber epoxy and make a rear lit piece out of it.1 point

Going Away Present
frankorona reacted to Fedido for a topic
Alright SSV Nation, I haven’t posted much of my work lately, but thought this would be appropriate. It is a 20 MM aircraft gun barrel mounted on Bloodwood, which is the most dense wood I have ever played with). The mounts are Bubinga with inlays to the coins, patch and the nameplate. The nameplate is scrolled in Canarywood. I was so surprised to see a red streak within the Canarywood. Never seen it before. It is finished with Teak Oil. Feel free to ask questions. I totally enjoyed this.1 point -

I'm looking at that :"critter" - please post your experience when you try it out?1 point -
I spray everything with lacquer. No more than I stain it's just as easy for my to use a brush. In the past I used to build a lot of big things and I sprayed them. It was messy as heck. I still had to wipe them off.1 point

In the past I've use both HVLP and LVLP For paints the HVLP works best for stains and finishes the LVLP works best I don't have an airbursh that others here have so can't comment on that I used this page for my original guidance in selecting:1 point -
