    Market Photos

Hey gang, long time no see... I hope everyone is doing well. A buddy of mine snapped some drone photos of my weekly market today. Great start to the season. Everyone itching to get out and spend a little money. And a shot of my booth setup today.

  4. My Grand Daughter is nuts about lacrosse. It has been a rough 2 years. The team has only been able to get together on Zoom. They do drills etc. and the coach sent everyone a shirt with the saying so I made plaque just for fun. Designed on Friday night cut and painted yesterday and delivered this morning for the zoom meeting. Actually I did too fast as the chevron is not centered in circle. Didn't see until I was nearly finished cutting. I doubt she will notice. The front is 1/4 BB and backer is 1/8.

    Egyptian Biscuit Box

Yesterday I finished my first 'box' of any kind. It's from a 1928 pattern of an Egyptian Biscuit Box offered by Hobbies at that time. For those of you who remember, my wife loves ancient Egyptian artifacts and art. So. I decided to try my hand at making something Egyptian for her birthday. It's made mainly fro 1/2 inch birch plywood with oak corner pillars and trim. The cartouche I copied from a bracelet my wife got from Egypt and is her name in hieroglyphics. The cartouche is the front and the winged scarabs are on the other three sides. The darker stain is English Chestnut from Minwax and the lighter woods are just clear satin finish. The main box is 7 inches square and the overall height is 10 inches.

  6. …About a Man Named Jed. A Charles Dearing Pattern of Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, pretty small at only approximately 5 1/2” x8” Cutting the fretboards that small was pretty challenging. I used Pegas spiral blades for about 90% of the cuts on the project, though I did use Pegas MG flat blades for the longer straight cuts. I got a little sloppy in a couple of places with the spirals.

    Wall racks

I was telling my wife about the fact that the Big Foot wall rack was very popular yesterday at the market and she asked if I'd thought about doing a bigger version as I did with the Carolina Beach sea turtle... Hmmmm... so, today I'd like to introduce Bigger Foot. The key/leash wall racks have been hugely popular and a boost to sales.

    Sign lettering

Making my first 3d sign for my son's wedding. This is few of the 1/2" poplar letter I have cut on my new Pegas saw with #3MGT Pegas blades. These will be painted high gloss black and glued to a weathered oak panel. Big thanks to @Denny Knappenfor getting me in line to get a saw during the winter. The quarter is for sizing.

  11. You do realize you can cut out the actual pattern from the full sheet? You don't need to stick the whole full sheet down to your board. This is what I do and also what I do for normal paper patterns where I use the spray adhesive. I only spray the pattern not the full board, as the spray wasn't very cheap beforehand and now it's more than ever.. If you get 62 units from a can that cost $10 plus the cost of your regular paper.. the prep time to spray each pattern etc.. In my eyes anyway.. a 1000 shipping labels for about $60 just looks much cheaper than all of that hassle without actually doing the math.. and actually doing the math I think it comes out cheaper.. but I maybe wrong. I don't know how much regular printer paper cost off the top of my head. How much does a 1000 sheets of cheapest regular paper cost? How many cans of spray does it take to spray 1000 sheets.. How much quicker is it to just peel and stick your board full of patterns? I find these labels peel really easy.. There are other labels that have cross cuts on the back side so if you cut out the pattern in the center of the sheet there is usually a small cross cut on the back to grab hold to easily "start" peeling off the label from the backer. The ones I now use do not have the cuts on the back but they do peel quite easy if you pick at a edge with your finger nail. These are what I use.. They was $60 last time I bought ( last fall ).. Maybe doing a search can result in cheaper seller.. It takes me about a year to use these up, used to be 2 times a year when I used these for their purpose and printing my labels on them.. Now that I have a regular label maker I don't use the full sheet for labels. https://www.ebay.com/itm/172818314778?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

  13. I do a couple craft shows a year plus take some orders from past customers and friends so I make more pieces then the average hobby scroller. My 4 cans will last me 2 1/2 to 3 years. I also go through at least 4 sheets (5'x5') of 1/8" baltic birch a year and I never tracked the board feet of hardwood that I use a year because I do more wood working then just scroll saw work and I donate some of my work to the church and other organizations.

  14. Thank you for your encouragement. I will use them again and see how I am doing at that point. Some patterns just seem to scream to use the spiral and then I don't hesitate to do so Dick

  18. 1938 Lancia Astura Cabriolet Lancia is one of Italy’s oldest car companies being founded in 1907. The Lancia Company still exist in Turin and now is under the umbrella of Stellantis Auto Group which also includes Chrysler/Fiat, Citroen, Alpha Romeo, Maserati and Peugeot. The 1938 Lancia Astura was the epitome of the late Art Deco auto design period with its large flared front fenders and extensive use of chrome on the windshield and grill. The Tipo V-8 3-liter engine provided plenty of performance for either touring the Apian Way or along the shores of Lake Como in style and comfort. This model was only produced for 2 years with WWII disrupting car production for military purposes. I designed the pattern with MS 3D paint and used 1/8 BBPW with ¼” luan backer. Finish is shellac with Gloss lacquer.

    3M-77 Spray Adhesive

Switched from 3M to Aillene's Repositionable for a spray glue some years ago. It is readily available through Walmart, Amazon, and the hobby/craft stores. It sticks well - I've had it on the board for a few days without it drying out and lifting. And I don't need to soak is in mineral spirits or anything to peel it off. For small quick pattern glue-ups, I'll use the Scotch prepositional glue sticks - available on Amazon. That will dry and start lifting/peeling after being on the board a day or two.

Hi wolfmoon ,yes I just push the work sideways forwards and back with the saw on ,it takes a while to get used to working with them but you soon get the hang of it and you can get some great detail cut using spirals,I just make sure I cut inside the line and work up to it a bit like when your colouring I suppose and watch where I am cutting and not looking at the other lines as the blade tends to wander to where you are looking! that’s all I use now unless I have a very long straight line I need to cut otherwise it’s spirals all the wayjust give them a go keep persevering and you won’t look back

    Morality

I thank you for you complements on my work. It appears that you are struggling with H.L Menchen's quote. I guess your struggle is because, for you, Morality is derived from Religion. The difficulty is that one can derive different moral guidelines from different religions and even from different interpretations of the same religion. I prefer to think that Morality comes from the basic Decency and Goodness of most humans. Then, I couple that with Common Sense.

I decided to start learning to use spirals and do more delicate fret cutting and though I have never completely sold on the spiral, I did find if the cuts are really small and delicate I still will go for the spiral blade to prevent the breakage. Because I do not use them all the time, I do find that it can still be a little difficult but I still can manage them pretty well. The part I dislike the most about them is the 'fuzzies' they create.
