    Retiring again

Today is my last day at my retirement job. Retired from my regular job 19 years ago and have worked at this job for 18 years sometimes full time but mostly part-time. I've been working with mentally handicapped adults. Now I will have more time for my scrollsaw and lathe.

  7. Mix and match hummers. I could not get these complete before end of month "For the birds". Also "For the wife". Work got in the way of hobbies. Wood used.. . . -purple heart -walnut -lacewood (good for feather look) -myrtle -osage orange I got them shaped today. Maybe sunday I can go over then with 220 and then 320 grit. I angled the trailing edge wing quit a bit. The intent was to try get some more 3d effect. Making the head and tail rounder and thinner than main body also enhanced 3d look. I got carried away on thinning on a couple of the tails. But hummers are small anyway. I kept the wings as taller than the body for an action of flight look. I cut each one with same pattern from each piece of wood. This way I can mix and match pieces /colors. Then I have 5 of them. The one with no tail will have a darker tail from bocote. The pattern I made / traced with inkscape from a picture on net. I wanted easy number of pieces. The throat transition from body to neck turn out to be similar to a puzzle piece. I just could not use the olive wood (upper left first picture) into the smaller pieces and keep the olivewood grain intact. Maybe next project.

  9. My great grandson is really into trains so his grandfather,(my son), asked me to make a train plaque for my son to give him for his birthday. This is a Sam Custodio pattern that I have made once before, a long time ago. I personally like this pattern and since I had it on hand, I choose to cut and frame it. Dick heppnerguy

I got this free pattern from Google. Didn't quite work out the way it did in my head but still quite happy with it and so was the girl that I gave it too. Cut from half inch pine. Marg

With apologies to Judy Gale Roberts for the butchery of her pattern, I got this finished. I used a piece of spalted poplar I found by chance at the local Lowes. Backed it with 1/4 BB. Overall a fun project.

  12. In the Catholic church they perform baptisms on your children and babies. I have a great grandson that is getting baptized on my birthday, in Los Angeles. Several of our family members are going there for the event, including us. I wanted to find a plaque commemorating this event in James' life and looked to Sue Mey to see what she had to offer. I came up with this one and decided to also make this cross for his parents as well. I have not posted anything for some time, although I have made many things in my shop lately. So, here are two of pieces I made this week. Dick heppnerguy

    Don’t Do It

I purchased the insets from a local repair shop who ordered them from King. I then took the set screw to a local bolt supply house and purchased 1/2 dozen set screws. It was way cheaper than ordering from any usual places.

Have any of you tried Pegas super skip blades for compound cutting? I need to order some blades and was wondering how these would perform, thank you for any help you can provide. Bob

    Independence

Getting ready for American Independence Day coming up in July. Scrap wood, the base was a 2x6 salvaged from some nearby housing construction scrap bin (probably worth a couple hundred bucks these days). Piece is stained Minwax "Weathered Oak", base is Minwax "Honey". Sealed with a layer of rattlecan shellac. Took about an hour to cut the piece, then another hour or two worth of sanding and shaping the base. Holes for the flags were eyeballed, no idea what the angles are. I was looking for a Betsy Ross flag (the one on the viewer's left) on Amazon and found the "Spirit of 76" flag as well, so I picked it up instead of a 50-star flag.

  24. I have not had them long enough to find out. So far I've just plugged them in after I leave the shop. The description claims 30 hours per charge but I thing I read reviews that said it lasted longer. I just have chargers all over the house and shop, I can't give you a link but just search Amazon for VANKYO C750. That works as I've done so several times before ordering. Most headphones were much more expensive but there were so many 5 star reviews I just went with it. Very glad I did.

    Don’t Do It

I don't have a lathe or the desire to make my own clamp screws but I'm totally interested in this thread. I too love to make stuff so it is of interest to me. If I was younger, I might have to buy a small metal lathe but I have no room and another learning curve may not be in my lifetime.

    14" Jet Band Saw help

Not to hijack this thread but a question for those of you who are following this thread. I'm toying with the purchase of the Carter guide system. Not the stabilizer but the guides. I'd like to know who has them, what you think of them and would you recommend that I buy a set? Please, don't just say I need them because you bought them. I want to know if they improved your saw and would you buy them again? My saw cuts pretty well now with the stock guide system but I'd like to improve it if possible. Thanks.

    14" Jet Band Saw help

I do every now and then. The most recent I've done was making wood boxes for my iphone se. I have one done in hickory, walnut, ash and cherry. I cut from 3/4" wood down to about 3/16" I brole the cherry box. Very soft wood. The smaller parts I cut on my scroll saw.

    Retiring again

As someone who has also worked with handicapped kids and adults, I know you will miss some of them quite a bit. I did my old job for 19 years and I still miss talking to a lot my friends. Not everybody can do that kind of work, so you should be proud of your retirement job.

  37. Got my Headphones yesterday. Charged them overnight and used them today. WOW! They are great. I was not expecting much for $49 but was pleasantly surprised. They are beautifully boxed and built. I'm able to listen to podcasts perfectly and outside noise is completely shut out. Wish I knew about these years ago. I've enjoyed scrolling but these headphones make scrolling a brand new great experience.

    Flowers for my sweetie

Very well done. Sweetie will love them. Mount them on a poster size framed backer and it would be a real nice wall hanging. Maybe find/make a pattern of a vase that you could use at the bottom.

    Fret Box

Easier than you think. If it was 1/2" or larger material, I would have to cut the miters on a table saw or router but since it's only 1/4" I use my belt/disc sander. It has a plate on the disc side where the angle can be adjusted and I set it to 30 degrees. It has a sliding miter on the plate and I feed the piece against the disc until I get a sharp edge. I just make sure all the pieces are the same length. I did the same with all the small pieces I used for stops on the top.
