  3. I needed some down time between "honey-do" list projects, so I hid in the garage and tried my hand at these 3 Steve Good patterns. Simple, but satisfying after being away from the saw for several days.

  4. Was wondering what you guys thought Might look good on this. It is 3/4 Poplar. Stain, clear coat or teak oil. What say you?

  5. OK, it is outside the box, used a vase pattern from Steve Good, and installed a Bluetooth speaker during the build. Inlaid the two birds. Used heart wood and aspen. The peacock feathers came from my fly tying bench. It has surprisingly good sound quality, the hardest part was figuring out the baffle over the speaker. Onward through the fog!

  7. I came across mention of a scam website - dwltset - purportedly selling DeWalt tools at a ridiculous discount. There was mention of them charging your credit card and then spoofing a delivery # and spoofing an actual delivery (neither of which are real) to put off investigation by the credit card company. Stay away from this site.

  8. I have a brother printer that will print Ledger (11” X 17”). Pedro puts them on A3 (11 3/4 X 16 1/2) the sizes are out a smidge but it seems to work. @Scrappile in fact the brother printer is able to print A3 size paper, but I can’t find anywhere to buy A3 paper locally.

  9. I tend to agree with Frank on this one. The coloration of the poplar board will fight against any effort you make to stain it. It provides some visual interest and character, but I think the color should be left mostly natural, with a dark backer.

    Air Brush

My wife is getting into using a airbrush for her stained glass painting. Got me thinking if an airbrush can be used for putting on a finish? Any of you use one for anything?

Thats great work. Scrolling letters is one of the hardest things to do with a scroll saw I feel.

Well done. One of the greatest tests of a scroller's skill is in accurately cutting text. That pattern may look relatively simple to the inexperienced eye, but it has at least 9 or 10 different fonts and is a real challenge. I made one last year and remember it well. I loved the pattern and the recipient really appreciated the finished piece, but am not anxious to do another one.

  19. Yeah the DeWalt is what I was looking to get. The one I wanted is out of stock at H/D now otherwise I'd have ordered it. It's the one with the rolling stand as well. https://www.lowes.com/pd/DEWALT-10-in-Carbide-Tipped-Blade-15-Amp-Portable-Table-Saw/50040968 I'm wondering if this shortage of everything is also coming to tools. In my shopping I've found a lot of things out of stock or back ordered etc. There is several sites showing this saw as low stock etc. I found a eBay listing with several and thinking maybe I should grab it up, LOL I don't use a table saw all that much, maybe because the one I have is very inaccurate and has been a piece of junk since day one of getting it. It's a cheapo ( Tradesman ) that I bought on clearance for $69 with a stand back around 1998 because I was doing a remodel project in my house. ( before I was into woodworking ). I'd like to get back into making some cutting boards but can no longer do that with this saw. About 5 years ago maybe longer a bearing in the gearbox went bad and seized up. This made a cloud of smoke come from the motor. I took it apart and changed the bearing but sadly the motor is real weak now. Does fine for what I " really need " it for which is just chunking up my 5x5 sheets of thin BB ply.. I'd just like to be able to rip some 1" boards etc. again. The Hercules one from H/F had some pretty good reviews on it too.. But it's not really any cheaper once I get the stand etc. so I figured I'd just go with a reputable name brand and something I know I can get parts for later on if needed. A lot of the H/F stuff doesn't seem to have a parts source like ereplacement parts etc.. always a witch hunt for parts for that off brand stuff sometimes. Guess they expect it to be thrown out and buy a new one.

  21. here is a quick phone edit of your picture. By quick I mean 1 minute, so it is crappy. I quickly picked light brown and tried to match a color to clear finish on poplar. Ok it was a guess.

  25. It may be this next winter before I get back to the clock... I don't get a lot of scrolling done in the summer... HA,,, A couple years ago Pedro had some real health problems and his site sort of shut down.... Least he could not respond to orders and such.... When he finally got back to it,,, I ordered quite a few of his box plans and the clock... because I wanted to make sure I had them, just in case... if you know what I mean... It appears he is doing fine... Hope so. I will probably not live long enough to complete his plans that I have. But I an a patternaholic.. The last box I did, didn't make the cut to be pictured at his site... I thought I did pretty good with it,, but the picture never got posted. I love looking at the pictures of what others have done with his patterns... Always inspires me.. Like I stated,, only a few USA people....

You could make spacer blocks that would be hidden behind the artwork. Glue them in place and use a d-ring hanger for mounting.

  30. enjoy your new tools, I just got the Supermax sander a few months ago and love it.
    1 point
  31. Yeah, I really kind of wanted the 10" saw because I already have a variety of 10" blades etc. The cross cut difference though.. The 10" was only 12" cross cut and the 12" saw has a 14" cross cut. I can see me using all of that to the max. with carving signs etc. on my CNC. Now my next big purchases are going to be a table saw, and a drum sander.

  33. Thanks for the heads up.. I got scammed a few years back on a label printer.. I knew the deal was too good to be true but was a dummy and went for it. Now I only purchase from reputable sites or at a minimum more realistic priced sites, LOL

  34. I looked real strongly at that H/F miter saw and it would have been the one I purchased IF it had been in stock at my local store. I've had the DeWalt and the H/F in my shopping carts online for about two months waiting to see who was going to be offering a deal. I was torn between those two and H/F also has a nice rolling stand too. But the price difference on the stand was really not worth the hassle. Funny because H/F is close to me compared to Home Depot. But since H/D was giving free shipping to me I'm just letting them deliver it to me. The H/F ones have been out of stock for 2 months.. They was supposed to get some in first part of May so I waited.. Never happen, and now they are saying end of June, LOL.. I'm tired of waiting and using this one I have to make my sign blanks it's a real pain. My table saw motor is junk so I can't even use it for cutting anything other than chunking up the 1/8 - 1/4" BB plywood I use into usable sizes. Bandsaw isn't big enough and also is set up to resaw so.. New DeWalt it is. BTW It seems H/F is making many of the larger tool purchases "In Store Only" Had they delivered I'd have bought the larger 12" miter saw and that rolling stand and possibly the Hercules table saw. seem to have good reviews on it too.. BUT, they only ship the 10" one that's out of stock, The 12" Hercules miter saw and the rolling stand cost more than the DW I bought LOL and with the daughters Jeep apart I don't have any wheels here to drive during the day.. had I known the machine shop was going to take 5 weeks on my engine block and heads I'd have legalized my old Dodge truck. I don't insure it other than to haul my 5th wheel travel trailer which is only a few months in the summer. But no trips in the works this summer so was just going to leave it in storage for this year. Anyway, I guess I bought out of frustration as I scraped a couple signs yesterday as trying to get the board lined up to cut perfecting inline to the first cut on this non-sliding miter saw I have, I just came in and went on my shopping spree, LOL. H/D did have the items on sale to so that played a part too, LOL

    Moon Intarsia done

With apologies to Judy Gale Roberts for the butchery of her pattern, I got this finished. I used a piece of spalted poplar I found by chance at the local Lowes. Backed it with 1/4 BB. Overall a fun project.

  42. Mix and match hummers. I could not get these complete before end of month "For the birds". Also "For the wife". Work got in the way of hobbies. Wood used.. . . -purple heart -walnut -lacewood (good for feather look) -myrtle -osage orange I got them shaped today. Maybe sunday I can go over then with 220 and then 320 grit. I angled the trailing edge wing quit a bit. The intent was to try get some more 3d effect. Making the head and tail rounder and thinner than main body also enhanced 3d look. I got carried away on thinning on a couple of the tails. But hummers are small anyway. I kept the wings as taller than the body for an action of flight look. I cut each one with same pattern from each piece of wood. This way I can mix and match pieces /colors. Then I have 5 of them. The one with no tail will have a darker tail from bocote. The pattern I made / traced with inkscape from a picture on net. I wanted easy number of pieces. The throat transition from body to neck turn out to be similar to a puzzle piece. I just could not use the olive wood (upper left first picture) into the smaller pieces and keep the olivewood grain intact. Maybe next project.

  48. Eagles have been one of my go to patterns since I started scrolling. However, birds in general has been my popular subject and makes up a large part of what I have completed. In fact, not shown yet, I just finished another Parrot cutting, but is still in the finishing and framing process. Edit 5/15, see added pic at bottom. Edit 5/15:

    Air Brush

You can spray at least as wide a pattern with an airbrush as a rattle can. I have a bunch of airbrushes. I make mostly toys. My favorite and the one I highly recommend is the Badger 155 Anthem. It will spray as fine as most of us are likely to need and wide enough to cover larger areas using the same tip. I spray mostly acrylics and shellac, but Badger airbrushes will spray anything while the China airbrushes will not hold up to things like lacquer. The China airbrushes are cheap until you break something and need parts, as I discovered when I broke a tip. The replacement parts cost almost as much as I paid for the airbrush, and they were tough to find. I can buy Badger parts direct from Badger, Amazon, and many other places on the internet. Badger will rebuild your airbrush for the cost of the parts.
