    Old and New Sitting Bull

One of my first projects was sitting bull. I saved the cut out pieces and had an idea in mind. Here is what I came up with. Just took me 6 months to do it.

    My 1st Name Puzzle

I've made a lot of these name puzzles. I usually set my saw at a 4 degree angle so the letters go in easier. This is the font I use so I don't have to worry about islands.

  9. Hi Wichita: Did your Dremel come with a sander attachment? I still have mine and blades too - This was my starter saw also, back in the day It's a little saw that makes big noise...lol I found that raising the table, the stroke of the blade was not the same and made it slightly different to cut Fab4

  10. Back in the day. 1985, I started with a sears knockoff of a Dremel scrollsaw 13" used 3 inch pinned blades, 3 types available; 7 tpi, 20 tpi, and 25 tpi. Learned lots of tricks with that saw. It had an adjustable height table designed so you could use "all the blade". So I tried, results were never very satisfactory. Even tried starting in a raised position and moving down. Maybe it was just me...

    State calender hanger

Wife wanted something to hang a calendar with. I had a Montana stencil so I glued up some scrap walnut, cherry and paduck, planed it down, did some inlay and then cut it out on my saw. Was a nice break from other projects.

  12. I wondered about elevating the table with a 3/4 piece and even tried it once it is doable and in some projects might be worth it . Mostly though blades are bent, weakened or stretched
    2 points
  13. I would have thought that after using the blade in the normal position it would become slightly weaker in that section and more prone to breaking if used in an elevated position.

  14. In the past, I have cut the bottom 1/2" of the dull blade off. This works well if your saw will accommodate the shortened blade.

    a thank you gift

I have an old friend that has purchased and donated crosses to her church that are given to new people who join their church. She orders about 50 at a time. I found out she donates them to her church and felt bad that I had charged her for them but I kept the cost at rock bottom and not even sure if I collected enough to pay supplies and postage, but I was ok with that aspect of it. Anyway I decided to make her one of these crosses that I have gifted to other people also and we have one hanging in our house too. It is just a thank you for supporting my efforts throughout the years. She has purchased some of my woodwork for birthday and Christmas gifts in the past. Dick heppnerguy

    USS Ranger

you know how to see if edges are straight by looking down the line by rotating the part on edge. I used my phone to look down the edge. Yea tilt the phone like it was on edge. Those red /white stripes do Not have variations. The stars are perfectly aligned and spaced and not rotated at all. Since the stars are separate pieces this alignment takes very special effort during gluing process. I hope the were stacked cut. The middle oval is amazing. I can not tell if this black ring a seperate piece or the outer part is just painted. Either way the consistency of black thickness is awesome. The perfectness just makes me want to pull out my caliper to find something slightly off. I promise I won't do it on the pictures. Of course the text flows perfectly with the curved edges. I can not find anything to criticize or change.

    Scroll saw puzzles

Three books with good patterns, two currently available from Fox Chapel - one Colorful Toys by Dmitry Bogomazov for 7.99 (not strickly puzzles); Baby Animals by Judy and David Peterson (their patterns and puzzles are excellent look good and hang together extremely well); and Adorable Animal Family Puzzles in Wood by Jaeheon Yun available from Amazon for 12.99. The animal family puzzles would keep a child with a good imagination busy for hours with all kind os stories about the particular families' adventures. I'm not a sales person for these books just a puzzle maker who loves making puzzles of real and fantasy animals. As the kids grow older the books by the Pertersons can lend quite well to years of puzzles if you get hooked There is another book I would suggest for for kid's presents Wooden Banks you can make by Harvey Helm available from Fox Chapel for 14.95.

    For my boss

My boss's sister passed away last year. A few months ago I made him an over-sized heart key chain with her name on it. A few weeks ago his mother came down and saw it and loved it. He asked me if I could make something for her with her daughter's name on it. Wayne made me a pattern of something he uses for people who have passed away. I finally finished it last night. Wayne, thank you very much for the pattern! I used a FD UR1 which I had to practice with to get the hang of a regular blade again after using spirals for so long! 1/4" BB ply with 1/8" ply as the backer stained with something I found in the shop. Rattle can spray for the finish.

  31. This is similar to the bottle opener a few weeks ago. I decided that all bottle / lid openers did not have to be turned handles. Niles bottles stoppers sells this lid can opener. It looked liked it could save some cat lady's finger nails. Ok my wifes nails. So I hand drew some cat face on paper and and put it on some really hard dense wood Purple heart. I tapped the wood. Then I scroll sawed the cat face. The cat has a really shiney nose. I used CA glue on the threads like lock tight. I want the grip of the lid opener handle similar to a base ball. Your fingers goes around the handle to get a better pull. Added bottle opener. 1inch thick acrylic. Drilled and tapped for bottle opener. Cut with Pegas #11 skip, really slow motor speed. No melting was done. Arrowhead for a friend that likes NFL. He named his cat "Chief".

  35. You are totally correct. For me the title "Bragging Rights" is OK but if one is going to reply to a posting and only give praise, IMHO, there is nothing of value to be gained except to boost the OP's ego. The question is then: Why do we all comment on post in this thread? Maybe this forum needs another subject for posting. Something LIke 'Critique my Scroll Saw Work' where both positive and nagative comments are expected and welcomed. If one does not like to or want to receive criticism they would not post in that thread. You are also corrrect, I never asked for "constructive criticism", as I just assumed it would be offered if appropriate. And although I'm happy with the work I post and like to brag as much as anyone, that dosen't mean the work I do couldn't be better. So from now on I will add a statement for "constructive criticism" to all positng I put up. Now I will give you some unsolicited criticism to your reply: One long parragraph is VERY VERY difficult to read, even on a large screen like I have.

    Scroll saw puzzles

Actual photographs on glossy stock work very well for puzzles. You just have to glue the photo to the wood (I like 1/4" Baltic Birch Plywood) and tape the puzzle template to the top of the photo and cut the template. You may also like to use a sacrificial board under the puzzle/photo so there is little or no tear out on the good puzzle. Good luck and God Bless! Spirithorse

  39. I came across a utube video a few months back (and can't find it now, dang it) of a man who made a template of his scroll saw table out of wood and put it on top of his scroll saw table for just that purpose - to use all of the blade. I think it's a clever idea, but for me, it complicates things and adds more time to the process for that little bit of extra blade use. Now, here's a thought - if you really want to make your next million, invent a scroll saw with an adjustable table that not only tilts side to side, but could easily be adjusted to raise and lower to enable you to use the unused portion of the scroll saw blade. Oh, and if you make that million, I would appreciate an idea fee of 1/2% of that million.

  40. Scrolling is the most inexpensive hobby I've found. Pen turning can be very expensive unless you sell everything you make. Then machining. Many thousands of $. I've gotten rid of everything except my scroll saws. I've thought of perhaps collecting used shoe strings. That would be inexpensive.

  41. The Olsen crown tooth has always been my favorite blade. You have to learn when to change ends add not push them too far before you make the change. Yes the will track off in the opposite direction when you change.
    1 point
  42. I wouldn't bother for the low cost of the blades, but attaching a 3/4 or 1" thick piece of wood to your saw table, with a hole in it for the blade to pass through, should let you use a higher portion of the blade. It's your decision if going to this trouble is worth doing. If you do, make certain that you don't suddenly decide to cut something thicker (like a stack cut) that exceeds the stroke length that is left to work with or you will likely damage your saw. No thanks, I'll keep using my blades without worrying about the unused teeth of the blades and just keep replacing them when they go dull or break at less than $0.25/blade. Charley

  43. I always used to flip my blades end for end when I used the FD-UR blades.. They are similar to the two way cut blades with reverse teeth throughout the blade. I have also just flipped regular reverse tooth blades etc.. But sawing on the Hawk I find that once the blade starts getting dull it usually breaks soon. Taking the time to undo the blade and flip it for it to only last a couple more cutouts isn't worth my time to do. SO I just run them until they break, LOL. If you flip a blade expect it to cut a few degrees off on the opposite side that it normally cuts on. Takes a bit to get used to and many might ruin a project if they aren't careful. I got pretty good and just cutting with whatever blade and whatever way it's installed. It teaches one to learn to let the blade do the cutting and don't push it, just steer it, LOL

  45. Waste not, want not! I'm frugal so I'll try these suggestions. Save 4 blades, that's a dollar! For those of you who think I'm serious here, well, I'm not. Blades are cheap!
    1 point
  46. You could try the Olson or FD blades "Two way cut Crown Tooth" that cut either way. When it gets dull you flip the blade over 180 degrees and continue cutting. It does work as long as the blade is not to bent up. I use them occasionally. They are not the sharpest, but on the other hand, you are using the whole blade and you have more control. If you are looking for speed, don't bother. If you are looking for accuracy and nice clean cuts, they may work for you. They do take some getting used too. Just my opinion. Ben

  47. I decided to make this for my wife's return home after 3 weeks away from me. I thought it just might be better for me if I made her a return gift, since I have been busy in my shop making requests and nothing for her. See, I really am a little smarter than you all thought I was. This is a Steve Good pattern that has a riser on it so that it really is not totally attached to the backer board so when the lighting is right, it looks almost 3D. I made another frame attempt to set it off. I hope she likes it when I bring her home tomorrow. Dick heppnerguy
