Flower Butterfly Bottle stopper.
heppnerguy and 5 others reacted to preprius for a topic
Since I ordered bottle stoppers, I had to come up with different handle design. Different from the cat lid opener from a previous post. I chose a yellow butterfly on a redish flower, because wine gives people butterflies. Well I think that is why they drink it. Maybe it is the oil and vinager that attracted the butterfly. Oh well, this is for my neighbor. She can make up her own story. Wood used: Red gum 3/4" Yellow heart 1/4" Food safe finish. Shellac first , then Carnuba wax, butcher block conditioner. Found Johnson paste wax. Did not use oily butcher block. Mark6 points -

Seyco Dust Collection System Noise

happens on my shop vac and DC when the filter/bag starts getting a bit pluggered up. i thought my shop vac was takin a crap a couple weeks ago. it got quite loud and sounded a bit like something was comin apart in the motor. blew it out- still the same. then i was using it to clean out my car. rolling it around( as per the instructions- just pull it by the hose. ) to the other side of the car and it tipped over. the sound stopped. i think a little something got down near the stator or rotor. kevin- wanna have fun- blow out a DC bag. a leaf blower works great for it. 2 lessons from that: 1- best to do on a breezy day. 2 best to do it in an area where the wind isnt blowing towards an open window on the house.3 points -

Aneighbor is on Hospice
Woodrush and one other reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I have a neighbor a couple of houses from us and her husband has had cancer and she told me he was now on hospice and not doing very well. They are really nice people and I wanted to be sure and have a memorial plaque done to give her when the time comes so I cut it yesterday and I have it ready for that sad and lonely time. So sorry to hear about his suffering. I know his wife will be very lonely when that day gets here and she no longer will have his companionship. This is a Sue Mey pattern from her site....www.scrollsawartist.com Dick heppnerguy2 points -

Nice, looks to be BB too. What a treasure and thanks for the tip. Never thought about that and have seen a lot of cribs being put out for trash.2 points -
i noticed on the home depot website that HD put a prop 65 warning on deck screws even. i use MS as a pre stain conditioner on pine, poplar, and some other woods that have a tendency to blotch when i am using an oil based stain.2 points

I've had my Seyco DC for almost a year now and it's on my Excalibur which I haven't used a lot. Today was out cutting on it and thought it seemed like the DC is louder than it was. I checked things out. Not much in the filter / bag but was a lining of fine powder dust. I took it outside and used a air hose to clean it out. Put it all back together and quite as new again. If you have this style vacuum setup might want to check that out.. especially if you notice it's getting loud. I forgot exactly how much dust the thing actually does pick up too.. The noise was annoying to me at first so I just shut the vac off for a while. There was sawdust all over my lap and the floor.. I only cut one puzzle but looked like I had sawn for days, LOL1 point

a thank you gift
frankorona reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I have an old friend that has purchased and donated crosses to her church that are given to new people who join their church. She orders about 50 at a time. I found out she donates them to her church and felt bad that I had charged her for them but I kept the cost at rock bottom and not even sure if I collected enough to pay supplies and postage, but I was ok with that aspect of it. Anyway I decided to make her one of these crosses that I have gifted to other people also and we have one hanging in our house too. It is just a thank you for supporting my efforts throughout the years. She has purchased some of my woodwork for birthday and Christmas gifts in the past. Dick heppnerguy1 point -

Oh I Love it. Awesome job. That is so very true to a few people I know.1 point -
Thank you. I guess I could spray the 55/50 on after assembly. Clock will be approx. 16" tall. You made a beautiful clock. Hope mine comes out as good.1 point
-
Les, weather it’s right or not, I always assemble first, then apply the 50/50 mix, either by dipping or brushing if the item is too big to soak. Then I’ll shake of the loose oil then use compressed air to blow off the remaining oil. After the oil is dry, I’ll apply my topcoat, usually spray lacquer. Here’s a clock I made a few years ago. Made from 1/4 Cherry and Maple. No stain. Finished as above.1 point

found out about it by tearing down a crib for my niece. her son was movin on up. it made sense- probably a good idea to have some strong ply that wont warp after time with a toddler sleeping in it.1 point -
Where I live, with all the southern border runners, very little of any use ever gets to the curb. The stuff that does either doesn't last long or is way beyond any further use.1 point

I think that is just a brand name Les. Not sure but that's what I have now and I bought it before they outlawed it. Kleenstrip mineral spirits. I bought a quart of it way back and have sort of treasured it ever since. I really don't use that much of it.1 point

Someone on the Village said KleenStrip is the same thing as mineral spirits. So that is what I buy. I hope I have the name and spelling correct. Someone may jump in and correct me if I have that wrong.1 point

Too Complicated Tim, Thanks for the feed back. I dislike haveing to use JPG of a pattern, because it can not be manipulated with out converting in Inkscape or similar program. JPG's are OK if I'm converting a photo into a pattern, but would prefer to receive downloads in PDF or SVG. I have never worked with TIF files and do not plan to purchase Adobe Photoshop to do so. I'll have to live with Inkscape.1 point

You just need to fashion a muffler like I did out an orange juice bottle. LOL. It works great. I do use the factory bag in my vac and then run it through the mini cyclone. So far, no problem.1 point

Warped Wood

It did. But using too much moisture caused it warp in the opposite direction . Im talking about 1/4" wood. Using very light moisture it worked.1 point -
I would have thought that after using the blade in the normal position it would become slightly weaker in that section and more prone to breaking if used in an elevated position.1 point
-
Odd question: using more of the blade?
tomsteve reacted to Tom-in-Ashland for a topic
But then your reverse skip blade would be just a skip.1 point -
Scrolling is the most inexpensive hobby I've found. Pen turning can be very expensive unless you sell everything you make. Then machining. Many thousands of $. I've gotten rid of everything except my scroll saws. I've thought of perhaps collecting used shoe strings. That would be inexpensive.1 point
-
I wouldn't bother for the low cost of the blades, but attaching a 3/4 or 1" thick piece of wood to your saw table, with a hole in it for the blade to pass through, should let you use a higher portion of the blade. It's your decision if going to this trouble is worth doing. If you do, make certain that you don't suddenly decide to cut something thicker (like a stack cut) that exceeds the stroke length that is left to work with or you will likely damage your saw. No thanks, I'll keep using my blades without worrying about the unused teeth of the blades and just keep replacing them when they go dull or break at less than $0.25/blade. Charley1 point
-
I always used to flip my blades end for end when I used the FD-UR blades.. They are similar to the two way cut blades with reverse teeth throughout the blade. I have also just flipped regular reverse tooth blades etc.. But sawing on the Hawk I find that once the blade starts getting dull it usually breaks soon. Taking the time to undo the blade and flip it for it to only last a couple more cutouts isn't worth my time to do. SO I just run them until they break, LOL. If you flip a blade expect it to cut a few degrees off on the opposite side that it normally cuts on. Takes a bit to get used to and many might ruin a project if they aren't careful. I got pretty good and just cutting with whatever blade and whatever way it's installed. It teaches one to learn to let the blade do the cutting and don't push it, just steer it, LOL1 point
-
Denny You have to buy a gross to get near that price. Some of us don't want to buy a gross every time we need a few blades to finish a project. I have that problem right now. I literally have hundreds of blades that I will probably never use because i bought too many to begin with. Assortment packs are nice only if you use them.1 point
-
Ray The FD "2 way cut" at Mikes are just 25 cents ea. for a 12 pack, with free shipping. You don't need to buy a gross either. https://mikesworkshop.com/products/tc-2-way-cut Ben1 point

Waste not, want not! I'm frugal so I'll try these suggestions. Save 4 blades, that's a dollar! For those of you who think I'm serious here, well, I'm not. Blades are cheap!1 point
-
You could try the Olson or FD blades "Two way cut Crown Tooth" that cut either way. When it gets dull you flip the blade over 180 degrees and continue cutting. It does work as long as the blade is not to bent up. I use them occasionally. They are not the sharpest, but on the other hand, you are using the whole blade and you have more control. If you are looking for speed, don't bother. If you are looking for accuracy and nice clean cuts, they may work for you. They do take some getting used too. Just my opinion. Ben1 point

For some reason the AQMD here in Orange County doesn't think we can handle it. I mean, all we have here by the ocean is 24/7 breeze to keep the air clean. I don't get it. But, what do I know?1 point

I live in Ventura County in Southern California. It is readily available at any hardware store here. I use it for my 50/50 mix of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. I use this mix in place of Danish oil or any other oil finish. The boiled linseed oil brings out the natural grain and color of hardwoods. The M/S thins the oil to allow the oil to easily flow around the piece and into cutouts, and allows the oil to dry overnight. Then apply a topcoat. I also use M/S to remove stubborn patterns. I keep it in a plastic spray bottle and spray onto the pattern. It takes a few minutes, but the pattern will lift right off. I used to soak adhesive nozzles in a small jar filled with M/S but now, I just wipe the nozzle off with my finger after every use. if any cast iron top needs cleaning, I’ll wipe it down with M/S, then if needed, I’ll sand it with a fine grit sandpaper with my R/O sander and some M/S. I also use it to remove labels off of anything. A couple of years ago it disappeared from the shelves here. But it came back. I keep a couple of gallons in my shop in case it happens again.1 point

Next question. I am planning to do a 50/50 BLO treatment before assembly of the few parts I've cut like parts for the base and the trimmings and then pin and glue things together. Does that sound correct? Or, do some of you cut everything first, apply a finish, then assemble everything then spraying a final finish?0 points
