  1. I have had this pattern for a long time and I believe I got it from the Scroll saw magazine, quite awhile back. I just ran across is as I was looking for a different one and I showed it to my wife and she said she would like one of them. So here it is. I do not remember who the pattern maker is. I am quite disappointed in how it came out, as I found myself having to take it apart but still could not seem to get it right. From the far side of the room, it looks ok though. I only posted it because I don't want anyone to think I am sitting on my duff, watching TV Dick heppnerguy

  2. I've seen this cut a couple of times and decided I needed a bad guy for the cowboy section of my shop walls. I made a couple of changes since I cut it on a smaller piece of red oak, about 5 1/2 X 7 1/2. I preferred it without a tongue also so I removed that. Not that any changes were needed. Charles is the man. Just personal preference. Well, bye!

    Puzzle Stool

I have made a lot of these puzzle stools in different variations. I mortised the legs into the top on my scroll saw. Would be happy to share the pattern along with the lettering.

This was a huge project for me. Found the photo, made the pattern, did the cut. Here is the original photo, the corrected pattern (I hope no floaters) and the finished cut. I do believe I am just going to clear coat this one, of course on a dark walnut background. I will replace the pattern in the pattern library.

  7. Well in that case I can understand. I've heard of quite a few satisfied folks that use the porter cable saw. I don't know anything about it or even know if it's still sold. Could be worth looking into that one. I have seen a lot of people use the WEN etc.. But the biggest complaint was the lower blade clamping not easy to get to it etc.. Might be okay for projects that don't require a lot of blade removal though..

  8. Just a word of caution on buying used saws especially Hawks. I have been communicating with a guy that bought a Hawk G4 26 for an incredibly low price. That saw was so out of whack it was impossible to use. We now have it sorted . If you are not a mechanically inclined tinkerer a used saw can be an issue. I would also never buy a Hawk that is older than 2005 when the G4 was released. This is just my opinion based on what I have experienced.

  9. I understand your limitations but I don't think I would buy any of the lower priced saws. But with that said, if I was going to I think I'd look at the Wen. They have some decent entry level tools and if you aren't happy H/D will take it back. The other thing is make sure whatever you buy accepts 5" pinless blades and tool less blade changing.

  13. Quite similar to the crown of the fretwork clock I', attempting to make. The crown is nearly 8" wide I ordered 1/4" X 8 from Ochooch. It is still wrapped and flat. However upon opening is I'm wondering if it will warp. If it does I will resort to also cutting it in three pieces. In the meantime I plan on keeping it from warping by crossing my fingers. That should work. Sorry for the hi jack on this thread.

  19. Ben, if you get another saw, will you stop going downstairs to your shop? I ask the question for this reason. Why not just bring one of those saws upstairs? I get the feeling that your days downstairs may be ending so having the Ex upstairs would be better than having some lightweight, noisy vibrating saw.

  20. I don't think I could do that as it is pretty sore from the beating the wife gave me for it. Dick heppnerguy

  21. kevin I have a Hawk and EX now. They are in the basement. It's getting harder and harder for me to navigate those darn stairs. I don't want to spend 3 to 5 thousand bucks for a stair lift either. I am looking for something lightweight that I can sit on a small table. I have a spot picked out in my family room for it. It's about 5' X 7'. I don't want a stand. I plan on just making small toy items with it. I will investigate the WEN a little further. However, I'm pretty sure there are few scrollers on here with a cheaper saw that does the job. We just haven't heard from them yet. Thanks for the heads up on the Hawk saw. If I was younger I would be interested. In fact, if I was younger I would replace my 28 year old RBI Hawk with a brand new Hawk. They are still made in America and that goes a long way with me. My 28 year old Hawk still hums away nicely for me. Never a problem since i bought it brand new in 1993. Ben

  22. Too bad you can't get someone to help you pick up something from craigslist etc. There is a Hawk on your side of the state for $80. I was in southgate MI yesterday.. about 2 hour drive for me..( my daughter works there ) How far from southgate are you? In the price range you're looking at on this saw can land you a very high end saw in the used market. https://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/tls/d/warren-rbi-scroll-saw-model-inch/7314259056.html

    My Fretwork Clock

Here goes, my start on the clock since I think I have all the materials I need. Picture 1: The base with the first layer finished. Estimate time of completion is July 4...2023. I've been cutting the parts for each stage, 50/50 BLO then assembly. I first thought about spraying the BLO after completion but just applying with a small foam brush is working fine. If and when finished I will spray a final finish with a Critter spray gun which I do not have but am itching to get one. Reviews are excellent for smaller projects. Picture 2: This is my old Dremel table saw I've had for many years which I could not bear to give up. I'm finding some of my old modeling tools are coming in quite handy. The plans are fairly good but a really good photograph would help. All the details are there it is just that sometimes my old brain has to think. Something which I abhor.

    cutting down thick wood

No, you can't. But you could rip them into 6" manageable pieces to the length you need. You then cut those into 1/4" thick pieces or whatever thickness you need. My table saw can cut 3" inches deep and I flip the piece over to cut the other half for a total of 6 inches wide or whatever size you need to get to the desired width. You then glue the pieces together to make the required width you need. I needed a piece a about 12.3" wide wide by 1/4" thick. In my case I made 2 - 4" pieces and 1 - 5" piece and glued the 3 together. That is exactly what I did for my clock. You need a good rip blade to do it. I used my thin kerf, Forest 10" blade. Of course a bandsaw would be a better choice. But if you don't have one..... One final comment. If you would be able to cut a piece of cedar 18" wide x 1/4" inch think I can almost guarantee you it will curl or cup. The fretwork below is 3 pieces of walnut glued together. It is the top piece of my clock.

  40. happens on my shop vac and DC when the filter/bag starts getting a bit pluggered up. i thought my shop vac was takin a crap a couple weeks ago. it got quite loud and sounded a bit like something was comin apart in the motor. blew it out- still the same. then i was using it to clean out my car. rolling it around( as per the instructions- just pull it by the hose. ) to the other side of the car and it tipped over. the sound stopped. i think a little something got down near the stator or rotor. kevin- wanna have fun- blow out a DC bag. a leaf blower works great for it. 2 lessons from that: 1- best to do on a breezy day. 2 best to do it in an area where the wind isnt blowing towards an open window on the house.

You do fantastic work! Both the cutting and painting exhibits an extremely high level of craftsmanship. What are you using for paint? I don't see any shine so it must be some sort of matte paint. I have read that you spray the paint. Are you using a can like Krylon, or are you using some other type of paint. Maybe an air brush? Please forgive me if you have answered this before. If you have, please point me to that post and I will study what you said there. I would love to see an instruction video on one of your pieces. I cannot see your start holes either. Would love to see a video. Thank you!
