  1. So I have a co-worker who loves to hunt, fish.. all of it. He's walked a property I have access to hunt earlier in the spring to help me since I've never really hunted before. He's gonna retire next year, and we are all still working from home. So I cut this for him without him knowing, and I am going to just hang it in his cube before we have to go back, so when he gets in, it's just there, and I see how long it takes him to notice it. It's about 1/4 - 5/16" hard maple, with a ply backer... Cut with Olson #2/0R blades Another Sheila Landry design.

A couple of things I have been working on, now completed. The 2 boxes are Steve's I just personalized them. with some Railroad Heralds. Mingo is my pattern. It took longer than I had thought it would to paint the Railroad box. I waited until it was done, then as a second I decided to paint it. That's the reason it looks a little crooked in some places. Found a small screw for the knob. If I make another one no painting. Well maybe not as much.

  5. I don't! My single 28 year old grandson who lives on LI in NY has just purchased his first home. He is fixing it up, but things like wall art is not one of his priorities at this time. And, although he is 28 and an IT Tech for a large Senior Health Care facility, he still loves computer gaming, and likes watching odd entertainment like Adult Anime Animation. From what my daughter tells me, one of his favorites is called Castlevania...I've never heard of it, but found a lot about it on-line. I decided I would make him a house warming portrait piece as a present for him to hang on his wall. I found this image of a Castlevania character, Alucard, which I converted into a 11” x 15” scrollable pattern. Cut in 5/32” Maple solid core ply with Pegas #2/0 spiral blades and attached to a simple black painted 1/4” BB Ply backer. The panel was finished with multiple coats of clear gloss Lacquer. Cutting was a little chalenging as there are a lot of long unsupported thin pieces. The panel is mounted loose in a custom frame made from 1 3/4” wide Poplar, stained with multiple coats of Minwax Ebony and finished with two coats of Minwax Satin Wipe-on Poly. I think the Dark Ebony stain color affords a nice rich contrast to the portrait rather then just being painted black. Mailing it to him this comming week. Critique of my work is always welcome.

  6. This is my take on the nativity scene that several of you have also done. It measures 17x22" in 1/4" baltic birch. The backer is also 1/4" that is painted black with acrylic paint. The frame is chair molding from Lowes that is glued and pin nailed from the back onto the baltic birch. The frame is stained dark walnut. Everything is sprayed with shellac and then top coated with satin lacquer. The pattern is a Sullyscroller pattern. Everything was cut with spiral blades. The tiny details like the eyes were with a 2/0 blade. The largest blade I used was a #3.

  7. Iv been doing all kinds of crafts lately. These are some pictures of the wood crafts. My grandson was out for the weekend last weekend and we were looking through some of my wood patterns. In one of the books he saw this wood box and told me his mom used to have one just like it but it got ruioned so spike went out to see if we had the wood needed to make and since we did we made his mom a new box lol . I would have liked to have done some carving on it but we wanted it to be like the orginal so just left it blank, i would have liked to have put a cousion on it too...but her orginal didnt have a cover sooo we just left it lol . I am going to make some more of these if the wood prices come down so i can cave on them and put cousions on them. As i was looking through my wood i discovered 2 fret work peices all ready to be cut out. I have no idea how long they have been sitting in there but its been at least 3 years. I know because until last year I hadnt been able to do any of my crafts for about 3 years. there just simple easy fret work peices as when i tried to do more complex things i always wound up with breakage. since being here iv learned the reason none of my attempts to do more complex work is because i have cheap plywood. lol I am going to try to get some better plywood once the price of wood goes down somes. then i will ask you guys which type of ply wood i should get for the more complex patterns. at least now i know its not because after all these years im still just not good enough to do them lol I also love plants so i got out steve goods dog planter pattern and made that. I painted it to look like our new 1 year old dog bonnie. lol as soon as the paint drys im going to put the one plant i ordered through the mail that didnt arrive dead in it and put it outside. I have far to many plants in the house!! lol we're being over run with plants and the houseplants need to be thined out again and everbody put in new pots..... where im going to put them God only knows. My daughter in law said she will take some for her and my grandson connor as he started getting into plants at school this past year. I used to give my overflow to my daughter to take to work with her when she worked at the caseno.... for her friends but since she graduated collage shes moved to maryland with her husband and is teaching art in the schools there. My friend who i used to give plants to has moved so thats out, espically since she got good at keeping them alive. lol she now has as many plants as i do the only thing is id like to get rid of some of the plants i have so i could get some different kinds but i dont see that happening as like i said its time to thing out and repot the plants i have again! somehow i just cant just let them die or throw away the offshoots that are ready for there own pots. not only that but im not sure spike will be willing to buy me more pots to put the over flow in to. lol humm maybe my brother will take one or two again. so far he hasnt learned how to keep them alive yet. lol Im going to make the swan plant holder to and im going to send these patterns to my friend and see if she can make me a cat and a turtle planter....i do miss my little turtle spock, but it was just getting to hard for us to change his water and clean the apuriam and he was ready for a bigger one already so i gave him to one of the elemantary school teachers for her class room. she already had some land turtles so i knew hes be in good hands. Iv been thinking of maybe getting a land turtle if spike would let me but id have to look into more. I dont want to get one and then have to give him away .... but thats kind of mute spike said i cant have any more animals inless i get rid of one of the ones i have lol and thats not going to happen. He thinks 2 dogs, a cat and a bird are more then enough animal children to help me cope with my empty nest syndrume lol anyway the other 2 pictures are of the things my grandson cut out while he was here. ones a christmass solder and the other is of a knight jumping toy we still have to put the strings on. now i just have to find some new patterns to start on tomorrow lol time start some woodcarvings i think. My friend who moved up north wants me to make some for her to sell up there..... well off to go through my crocheting patterns a woman at the store asked spike if id make some hats to donate for giveing out this winter. lol I have several usb fill of crochet patterns to look through. lol Iv already made 3 of the baby grover hats. now im looking to find another pattern, for older children lol

Something about old Brit Sports cars, like wearing a bowler or saying "Bond, James Bond" . If you're not dusting off bugs from your right( left, U.S. version) elbow, you're not going fast enough. A true classic. 4 and 5 speed trannies at 190HP, TOP SPEED 120/130MPH. Cut from 1/8" bbpw with 1/4" backer.

  10. First let me provide "my" definetion or these terms. In scroll saw fret work we cut away areas in a wood panel to expose a recognizable image to the human eye/brain. In some patterns we cut away the wood around the image - with or without an inclusive cut frame - where the cut panel is a "positive" image (my definition) and the background is just that, a background. The image is a projection above the backer. In other patterns the wood that is cut away creates the image, where the cut panel is a "negative':, again my definition, with the backer providing a contrasting color that produces what the human sees as an image. In this type of cutting the image is only perceived and alwasy has a lot of gaps that are filled in by the brain to form the image. BTW, there is also another version where both positive and negative is done on the same piece...I've don a few like that. I'm hope my definitions are making sense and y'all understand the difference I'm describing. There are no real Q&A here. Maybe just a little discussion, comments, opinions, likes, dislikes about these different methods of image creation. Or maybe a better discusion is, which kind of "positive" of "negative" image creation is found to be more appealing to those who view, and/or comment on our. work? I'm not really considering Plaques or multiple layer pieces for this discussion altough there may be some revelance there also. In this virtual meeting of the membership the floor is hereby open for discussion.

  11. I agree with Dick (heppnerguy), very nice cutting. Great job using spiral blades. Spriral are pretty much all I use. The largest spirial I would have used would have been an #0 or #1. I don't even own anything larger. I like the detail you can achieve with small blades...especially the sharp pointy peaks and valleys.

  12. Frank your mermaid did have both posituve and negatiive silouettes. It make the viewer think. For me it was easy to see the mermaid. Only after we discussed how to paint it did I realize it was both pos and neg. So i guess the decision would be how or what the whole picture /story wants to be. If you want the viewer to think about the scene it is a good way to get them to pause and feel the art piece.

  13. I started out doing regular sillouettes where you cut out the pieces and toss them and save the main piece. had to worry abotu those eye pieces and such that would fall out if not connected and the like. I was doing one and sort of winging it one day and after I cut out the pieces i had difficulty seeing exactly what i was doing so i put the cut out pieces back in to see if I could figure it out. Was sold right then and there that by just having contrasting color pieces it will make the artwork much better, for me anyway. I have thought about going back to some sillouettes but doing them the other way, Getting rid of the main pattern and only saving the cut out pieces but havent got around to it yet. Sort of a photo negative type thing.

  34. Update. . . I did make the blade tighter. in fact a bit too tight. I stuck with mgt 2/0. I ran 1 blade for awhile. the next 2 blades just popped. So I backed off the tension just a bit. Seems to do much better. I did not try the 2/0 skip. Yellow heart and paduak. 1/4 inch. Looks like I will need to touch up some places for a better fit. Now for giving it depth. Need to get some grooves going. Again thanks for advice, tips, tricks.

  38. Like everyone else, I have never heard of it. However, I suspect if I asked my gaming 24 year old son, he probably would understand and know of who and what you speak. However, just because I don’t know about the subject, does not mean I don’t recognize the detailed cutting you had to do to make this excellent piece that I am sure will be well received and loved by your grandson.

Oh I am, Steam Locomotives are my favorite. My Dad was a Breakman for the old N&W. I can remember them Big Mallet's as they Roared and Rumbled past our house, I was only 4or 5 then, but somethings you just don't forget.

    I'd rather be fishing

That was book matched maple.. I buy 5/4 resaw it and bookmatch it.. that stuff stayed perfectly flat. not a single cup or twist to that maple. was soo nice not having wood bounce up and down from a cup when cutting.

    An old favourite

Did this as requested by a friend. I hope she likes it. Happy to be back at my saw. An A4 piece of 3mm B/B, #3 Niqua ultra reverse blade, 3mm birch painted black for the backer. The frame is Oak and was a tad fiddly to make and not perfect by a long chalk. 12½" x 9". H. Botas pattern.

  46. i dont know if it has anything to do with age or not but iv noticed the same thing. It seems to take me a lot longer to do a project then it used and like you i keep thinking i used to make better looking things and more impressive things back in my 20s 30s the ex would come home and tell me hed entered us in a craft fair for the weekend and id have to wip up a bunch of new stuff for it. He never wanted to take all the same kinds of things we took to the last one. somehow i managed to clean my house cook dinner from scratch and take care of 3 small children while still manageing to get at least one new box of projects done. I was always in the shop...these days it takes me a day just to trace some patterns and put them on wood let alone cut anything out. my mom used to tell me we slow down a bit as we get older...maybe thats it. what ever the reason im just glad i can do my crafts again
