    Another Horse

I purchased this vector file from Etsy of a Horse by DuglyGraphics. I had looked at this image for a long time and finally decided to cut it. The image was a little different and is intended for laser cutting, making it a little challenging to cut with a scroll saw. I’m kind of thinking the Image that was used on Etsy was a photo rendering as the final cut image does not quite look the same or, IMO, as nice as what was advertised. Here is the image that was shown on-line: I sized the pattern to fit on an 11” x 15” backer. I cut the image in 5/32” solid core ply that I painted Black. The cut panel is affixed to a 1/4” BB Ply Backer left natural. The panel was finished with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Spray Lacquer. The panel is mounted in my usual simple 1 3/4” wide Poplar Frame that was stained with Minwax Ebony and finished with two coats of Minwax Satin Wipe-On Poly. Now the Photo of my cut: Critique is always welcome and appreciated.

    Sue May pattern

Made this for a friends wedding. Interesting pattern. The flowers, names, and date are cut into the main piece which is Aspen. The dark frame and words are cut from walnut and glued to the Aspen. And a 1/4" BB backer painted black under the Aspen. Turned out to be tougher than I thought it would be.

  7. I did this beach scene back in Feb of 2019 and is posted on the site. The design is based on a paint by numbers my wife did and also a puzzle. My wife converted the picture in Photoshop to greyscale. The design took quite a while because I wanted to get the beach and light house right. We gifted the paint by numbers and puzzle to good friends that live by the beach.

    CURIOUS

I live in North Saskatchewan where winters are long can get very cold so have gas heated shop that i insulated very well and spend a lot of time in the shop, summers are nice long sunshine days but right now North American heat wave has hit us and will effect us only about a week I hope. At 78 I am getting slower to do things and perhaps take more to think through a project. We still maintain our home and yard and like Rocky have no intention of ever leaving our home . I like all kinds of woodworking but settling more into scroll sawing and carving as these activites can be sit down jobs.

My scroll saw is in a spare room in the house. I scroll when I please. My wood shop is not heated or air conditioned. I regret not adding insulation every day. I’m in NC. I plan on going out to work on my bench in the mornings.

    Cockerel,,,huh?????

I purchased this vector file from Etsy of a cartoon Cockerel by LaserDesignBel. I did not know what a Cockerel was but, after looking it up on Google, I found the it is a British English name for a young Rooster. I though the image was something different and looked like a fun piece to make. I found a number of colored images of a Cartoon version of a Cockerel that I use as an aid to adding the color. Cutting was quite easy even though the pattern was designed for Laser cutting, I used Pegas #2/0 spiral blades throughout. I sized the pattern to fit on an 11” x 17” backer. I cut the image in 5/32” solid core Walnut ply that I enhanced the Walnut color with Minwax Dark Walnut Stain. The cut panel is affixed to a hand painted 1/4” BB Ply Backer using Acrylic Art Paints after which the panel was finished with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Spray Lacquer. The panel is mounted in my usual simple 1 3/4” wide Poplar Frame that was stained with Minwax Aged Oak and finished with two coats of Minwax Satin Wipe-On Poly. After you stop laughing you are welcome to critique my work.

  11. A couple of mine. Saw the waves in an article about Fiona Kingdon in SSWW magazine, always wanted to cut one of hers, and it looked like a challenge. Hint....it was. Viking ship was an H.Botas pattern, as was the pirate owl (cuz, c'mon, who DOESN'T need a cutting of a pirate owl?!?), picked those up from his Etsy shop. Nautilus gears were from Steve Good, working gears are always fun to cut.

If you live in a humid area, buy an air conditioner. Do not buy one of those coolers that blow air through trickling water on a filter. It will raise the humidity, rust your tools, and make things worse than they are now. You want to remove humidity from the air, not add to it. Those work well in the desert South West, but not in the South East, US, even though they try to sell them here. An AC unit will remove the humidity and then cool the air. It is not as effective at cooling until it gets the humidity of the air lower, so don't try to use it with a window or door open and letting in more humidity. Keep the area closed up and the humidity low in there and you will get the best cooling possible from the AC unit. If a window AC unit and it just can't seem to keep up on those brutally hot days, a garden hose spraying a very fine mist on the outside coils of the window AC unit using very little water will help the AC unit remove the heat and it will work better to cool the inside. Only do this if you aren't paying high rates for your water though. Us with our own well water supply will benefit most from this. The plants and grass below the AC unit will appreciate the drink too. Charley

At 82 I'm not only done but can't. I can't walk across the lawn as any slight variation causes me to loose my balance. I have to use a walker. We hire a lawn service to cut, fertilize and do weed control. My wife goes ballistic if the yard is not pristine. Fortunately we have two daughters and sons in law who do a lot for us. We will never move to a retirement place. We are not willing to give up our home. Neither would our girls allow it. Would be different were they living a long ways off. We may be old but we are blessed!

  16. Iv been doing all kinds of crafts lately. These are some pictures of the wood crafts. My grandson was out for the weekend last weekend and we were looking through some of my wood patterns. In one of the books he saw this wood box and told me his mom used to have one just like it but it got ruioned so spike went out to see if we had the wood needed to make and since we did we made his mom a new box lol . I would have liked to have done some carving on it but we wanted it to be like the orginal so just left it blank, i would have liked to have put a cousion on it too...but her orginal didnt have a cover sooo we just left it lol . I am going to make some more of these if the wood prices come down so i can cave on them and put cousions on them. As i was looking through my wood i discovered 2 fret work peices all ready to be cut out. I have no idea how long they have been sitting in there but its been at least 3 years. I know because until last year I hadnt been able to do any of my crafts for about 3 years. there just simple easy fret work peices as when i tried to do more complex things i always wound up with breakage. since being here iv learned the reason none of my attempts to do more complex work is because i have cheap plywood. lol I am going to try to get some better plywood once the price of wood goes down somes. then i will ask you guys which type of ply wood i should get for the more complex patterns. at least now i know its not because after all these years im still just not good enough to do them lol I also love plants so i got out steve goods dog planter pattern and made that. I painted it to look like our new 1 year old dog bonnie. lol as soon as the paint drys im going to put the one plant i ordered through the mail that didnt arrive dead in it and put it outside. I have far to many plants in the house!! lol we're being over run with plants and the houseplants need to be thined out again and everbody put in new pots..... where im going to put them God only knows. My daughter in law said she will take some for her and my grandson connor as he started getting into plants at school this past year. I used to give my overflow to my daughter to take to work with her when she worked at the caseno.... for her friends but since she graduated collage shes moved to maryland with her husband and is teaching art in the schools there. My friend who i used to give plants to has moved so thats out, espically since she got good at keeping them alive. lol she now has as many plants as i do the only thing is id like to get rid of some of the plants i have so i could get some different kinds but i dont see that happening as like i said its time to thing out and repot the plants i have again! somehow i just cant just let them die or throw away the offshoots that are ready for there own pots. not only that but im not sure spike will be willing to buy me more pots to put the over flow in to. lol humm maybe my brother will take one or two again. so far he hasnt learned how to keep them alive yet. lol Im going to make the swan plant holder to and im going to send these patterns to my friend and see if she can make me a cat and a turtle planter....i do miss my little turtle spock, but it was just getting to hard for us to change his water and clean the apuriam and he was ready for a bigger one already so i gave him to one of the elemantary school teachers for her class room. she already had some land turtles so i knew hes be in good hands. Iv been thinking of maybe getting a land turtle if spike would let me but id have to look into more. I dont want to get one and then have to give him away .... but thats kind of mute spike said i cant have any more animals inless i get rid of one of the ones i have lol and thats not going to happen. He thinks 2 dogs, a cat and a bird are more then enough animal children to help me cope with my empty nest syndrume lol anyway the other 2 pictures are of the things my grandson cut out while he was here. ones a christmass solder and the other is of a knight jumping toy we still have to put the strings on. now i just have to find some new patterns to start on tomorrow lol time start some woodcarvings i think. My friend who moved up north wants me to make some for her to sell up there..... well off to go through my crocheting patterns a woman at the store asked spike if id make some hats to donate for giveing out this winter. lol I have several usb fill of crochet patterns to look through. lol Iv already made 3 of the baby grover hats. now im looking to find another pattern, for older children lol

I don't do much scrolling in the summer. I have basically stopped until fall. I may do a little project. I have too much other stuff to do as a homeowner if I can find someone to help me. Seems nobody wants to work anymore. My time is short for getting things done outside living in MI and having only a few months of really nice weather to get things done and enjoying the summer weather. I'll probably start scrollin' again in Sept., Oct. Just curious how others go about it. Ben

I also have my saw in a spare bedroom. Very nice not having to go up and down stairs. Last night I finished a new dust sucker thing-ee for the saw, so the little vacuum I use will grab both the top and bottom dust. That keeps the wife happy.

    Another Horse

Thanks for showing the orig picture. The original has the feel of a wanted poster that you would hang up in a barn. Your version has the feel of hanging in the business office that deals with expensive race horses. Oh and the colored patches are missing from the horse. I am playing with words here. Painted horse concept. Since you like to add color I thought I would mention it.

    USS Ranger

Ranger was my home in 72-'73. She brought me to the Gulf of Tonkin (Vietnam) just in time for Linebacker 2 - one of the bloodiest air campaigns of the war and quite possibly the longest 11 days in my life. That campaign led to the final cease fire and withdrawal from the war. She was a great ship and never looked better than when returning from a strike. Great project and beautifully executed, Crupiea.

When I lived in Merced CA (USAF) ,. My mobile home had a swamp cooler on the roof. In that dry climate that worked great. But I also did not have any tools at that time. I The humidity here on LI is brutal at times and I run a dehumidifier all summer in my basement. When it gets real bad I have stand alone AC unit that I vent outside, that really cools the basement quickly. The rest of the house has CA
