  1. A couple of big home improvement projects have kept me off the scrollsaw for 2 months or so and they are finally complete. I recently received 2 requests for a couple of my wedding/anniversary signs. They are two layered and cut with pegas skip tooth #3. It was great fun to be back on the saw. Be blessed.

  2. My wife requested I do this project as a wedding gift. I may have tackled a fairly intense project with all the fretwork but overall I feel it came out pretty darn good. This pattern, as well as the pattern from my first project, are from Steve Good.

  3. I found this free simple, yet elegant, B&W Wood Burning Stencil on line that I converted in Inkscape to a scroll saw pattern. The conversion was mainly the addition of bridges and resizing to suit an 11 x 17 panel. The cut panel is 1/8” BB Ply affixed to a 1/4” BB Ply backer. The cutting was relatively easy and was completed with Pegas #2/0 spiral blades. From the onset it was my intention to make this a colored piece. Both the cut panel and the backer was hand painted using Acrylic Art paints. Since the image is raised, all edges of the cut panel needed to be painted also. This is a real pain in the butt process. The painting process took quite a few hours to complete. Of course as usual the assembled panel was finished with multiple coats of Clear Spray Gloss Lacquer. The Frame, once again, is a made of 1 3/4” wide Poplar but finished a little differently this time. I used Minwax Classic Black Poly/Stain laid on heavy (3 coats) to create a high gloss finish. I think it adds a little “pop” to this piece. (I need to get a different color backdrop for my photo booth to use with black frames.) Critique of this work is always welcomed. Edit: Changed back drop in my photo booth.

    Recent Names

My niece's stepdaughter asked if I would scroll her name. I was able to create a pattern using MS Publisher with Brush Script font. The size was going to be 20 inches and I thought I'd have to use spiral blades because my saw only has a 16 inch throat. I was able to complete the cut only using regular blades. The project came out so well that my niece wanted one for her. I decided to do one for her and her husband in a matching set. If anyone wants to know how I created the letters using MS Publisher, let me know.

  5. I can't remember the last time I did a full batch of puzzles... But I had to catch up on some items sold the past few weeks to replenish this weekend. Since I started offering the wall mounted leash holders, they've been the hot item lately.

  6. Over the 4th of July weekend my wife made me an apple pie, I made a rack of ribs on the Traeger, and I cut a baseball piece! This Hank Aaron piece is an Al Baggetta pattern done in Red Oak with Lacquer finish. Several Pegas #1 & #3 blades gave their lives for this.

  8. In my introduction post I mentioned I usually cut animal projects. I did complete a lighthouse project recently. The pattern is from Steve Good and I tried to be a little artistic with the painting on the backer board. I'm in NC and we have 7 coastal lighthouses. I started to try and copy one of the patterns on the state's lighthouses but decided I liked the grain of the wood better.

    My First Project

This was the first project I completed. My niece has a horse tack store and does horse training and riding lessons. She displays a lot of my projects to see if they will sell.

  12. Finally finished. I had a hard time finding silver paint. This is a modified Sue Mey pattern. Using 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood and backed with 3/8" Baltic Birch plywood. Cut on the Pegas scroll saw using Pegas #1R MGT blades. I should have used a thicker blade on the veining by the hearts. Comments welcome.

  15. We were married on July 2nd in 1966. Steve Good has an anniversary pattern for most years and I made one last year. This morning, I relpaced last years plaque with an updated one. The plaque is located on one of our kitchen widow-sills The foreground is made of 6mm thick Figured Maple and the background of 18mm thick Baltic Birch plywood treated with Light Green Saman stain.

    Finally back on the saw

If you want to cut the circle part first, before cutting the insides, you can double face tape them, and make a jig for a bandsaw if you have one. then on the backer you may see the center pin where a small nail tip sits.. but you can cut the outside perfect circle. There are some real nice plans on YT for adjustable ones so you can cut circles from like 3" out to 3 ft or larger... but it will easily handle up to a 20" circle.. I made this one for myself.

Very nice piece. Much more technical than my artistic abilities!

  20. Preprius, I cut this with a Flying Dutchman #5 ultra reverse. Frank, I might have selected a thinner wood for this piece but the thin material I have is very brittle and I didn't think it would hold up without chipping. Also, I liked the way the grain showed as well as the knot in the area of the little house at the bottom.

    Buterfly and Flowers

Questions: On the red flowers is the dark red the only raised area? The light red is backer board? Is this the same with light blue on butterfly? Me not knowing, does the wood need to be primed for acrylic paint? The green stems swirls got a bit thin. Maybe the pattern needs to be tweaked. My idea is super thin wont add much to the art piece. But a broken piece will detract from product. the following comments are just future thought and probably stupid ideas. Since the butterfly is not part of the backer, mount the butterfly on spring steel wire so it can move in the breeze or if you touch it. This will change the viewers attention but will also have potential to degrade from fine art to cute idea. By the way , The piece is beautiful.

  22. I used to have the same problem but found the answer. Just cut close to the line leaving enough to see the line. Then go to the disc sander and sand to the line. Really easy and quick.

Very nice Frank. Your work and creativity is top notch. Would you care to share the pattern you made? I've spent too many hours trying to learn Inkscape to no avail. I've decided to rely on other more gifted folks.

    Couple of projects done

Made these for my wife's birthday. The basket is a Sheila Landry pattern done from aspen and some mystery wood I had. The Jerry Garcia is a Botas pattern and was cut from soft gum maple, the frame I made from zebra wood.

  28. Top layer us 1/4 bbp. backer is mdf. To even the stain color on the bbp I use a 2lb cut laquer sanding sealer and very lightly sand before staining. Then it gets several coats of H2O based poly in matte finish. Edge is copper foil.

  29. I cut them on my scrollsaw which is challenging due to the size. I cut both layers at once do they match. I have devised a plan to cut them using a circle cutting jig and my router with a hole in the backer board but for now I cut them on my ss slowly and carefully.

    Finally back on the saw

Beautiful, if you dont mine me asking-do you cut the circular part on your scroll saw or some other way? I have a lot of trouble making my circles perfect on my scroll saw and was wondering if I should use a router circle jig for the circles?

    My First Project

Thanks everyone. Yes, there is a backer over the entire horseshoe. I agree that a darker backer would have contrasted better to make the project "pop." In actuality there is some contrast but it doesn't show up well in this picture. Being my first project I was still determining if I was even going to like scrolling.

Hi, I'm Ben Me too! "The photo should be taken in front of an uncluttered, clean, plain backdrop." Good luck with that in my shop. Most of the time I just shove things to the side when I take a picture.
