  1. My wife requested I do this project as a wedding gift. I may have tackled a fairly intense project with all the fretwork but overall I feel it came out pretty darn good. This pattern, as well as the pattern from my first project, are from Steve Good.

    Cowboy Trifecta

This project (set) was found on the net and unfortunately there was no name to give credit. I tend to finish my projects where the grain from the wood will show but on this project I decided to blend some paints and try to give it a desert effect. Both the front and back are 1/4 inch sanded pine, some I've had for over 20 years. It was very brittle and there were a few chip-outs in places. It was cut with a FD #5 Ultra Reverse blade. I was happy with the way it turned out and apparently the first person I showed it to thought so also. He purchased the set before I could carry them across the road to show my niece who is a horse fanatic. I hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I did cutting them.

  4. So prices have stabilized in my area for hard/soft woods - ply continues to be wonky so I'm avoiding it for a bit. Anyway, just wanted to mention to be on lookout for discarded furniture and pieces. Yesterday while walking the dogs, I noticed a neighbor had thrown out a bunch of cabinet doors. I grabbed them all and found out they are all solid wood - looks like poplar, about 1/2" thick. Neighbor came out and said he had a dresser he was throwing out as well. SCORE! Solid oak! about 1/2" all around. A few drawer rungs were pine but most of it oak! just a reminder to keep an eye out for discarded treasure!

    My First Project

This was the first project I completed. My niece has a horse tack store and does horse training and riding lessons. She displays a lot of my projects to see if they will sell.

  7. I found this free simple, yet elegant, B&W Wood Burning Stencil on line that I converted in Inkscape to a scroll saw pattern. The conversion was mainly the addition of bridges and resizing to suit an 11 x 17 panel. The cut panel is 1/8” BB Ply affixed to a 1/4” BB Ply backer. The cutting was relatively easy and was completed with Pegas #2/0 spiral blades. From the onset it was my intention to make this a colored piece. Both the cut panel and the backer was hand painted using Acrylic Art paints. Since the image is raised, all edges of the cut panel needed to be painted also. This is a real pain in the butt process. The painting process took quite a few hours to complete. Of course as usual the assembled panel was finished with multiple coats of Clear Spray Gloss Lacquer. The Frame, once again, is a made of 1 3/4” wide Poplar but finished a little differently this time. I used Minwax Classic Black Poly/Stain laid on heavy (3 coats) to create a high gloss finish. I think it adds a little “pop” to this piece. (I need to get a different color backdrop for my photo booth to use with black frames.) Critique of this work is always welcomed. Edit: Changed back drop in my photo booth.

    Recent Names

My niece's stepdaughter asked if I would scroll her name. I was able to create a pattern using MS Publisher with Brush Script font. The size was going to be 20 inches and I thought I'd have to use spiral blades because my saw only has a 16 inch throat. I was able to complete the cut only using regular blades. The project came out so well that my niece wanted one for her. I decided to do one for her and her husband in a matching set. If anyone wants to know how I created the letters using MS Publisher, let me know.

    Peace Goddess

A big thanks to Multitom for the pattern work on this one. Even with the pandemic going on he spent time to work on this pattern and send it on to me to cut. Took me a bit to get to it with stuff going on also. Here she is, did it 11 X 14 on 1/8 oaK Ply. Did two different colored backgrounds just wanted it different. Thanks again Multitom. jim

  16. Most knocking problems in the DeWalt type saws comes from the connecting rod between the motor cam and the rocking beam and the rocking beam bearings, all back near the motor. The bolt that the rocking beam pivots on can also become loose or break (mine has blue Locktite on it now and it has been replaced once). Removing the left side cover will let you access this area easily. These are larger bearings and can be bought locally or on the internet by searching for the numbers etched in the bearing. The DeWalt connecting rod and bearings are now offered by DeWalt as a single assembly, because this aluminum part can stretch, either from use or by improper removal and installation of the bearings. If you don't own a bearing press and collars, it would be best to just buy this assembly from DeWalt. Any wear at all in any of these bearings or the rocker beam center bolt loosening problem will cause knocking when the saw is run. The videos by Gwinnet Woodworkers are great videos, but long and slow to watch, so very difficult for most to watch in their entirety. NEVER remove both side covers at the same time, because there is no frame to hold everything together. The covers are the exoskeleton that holds the saw together. One side can be removed at a time, as long as all of the bolts attaching the other side cover are in place, and are tight. Charley

  22. A couple of big home improvement projects have kept me off the scrollsaw for 2 months or so and they are finally complete. I recently received 2 requests for a couple of my wedding/anniversary signs. They are two layered and cut with pegas skip tooth #3. It was great fun to be back on the saw. Be blessed.

  24. Living in a beach community, many of our customers want beachy items. They don't really go for things with the area name in them but they do go for Sea oriented items. Some of our best customer are little ones and often know what they want and what they don't want is what their parents want them to want LOL. Here are some of our little ones most popular items (unfinished so they can color them) And one of our colored samples the kids love The adults go for other items however

  25. My array of Beach/Nautical/Ttropical cuttings is quite extensive. Some are from way back when I had first started up to my more recent work. Most of my latest work is intended to apeal to the Beach Community here along the Atlantic Coast of Central Florida. A lot of what we call beach side home owners love to decorate their high cost homes with a lot of beachy things. This first piece was one of my very early attempts at creating a pattern and then adding color to the finished piece. This last one hangs in my living room and we call it our aquariumn:

    Hello from greater Boston!

I am doing some very simple marquetry. I took a workshop a few years back, but work got in the way. I am almost-retired now, so I am going back to playing at marquetry. I have a couple of scroll saws, with the latest find being a Excalibur-30 fresh from Craigslist. I am still learning to drive it. I am finding that it's harder to control than my arm operated fret-saw, but I am getting better. Happy to join this community! xocd

  37. Preprius, I cut this with a Flying Dutchman #5 ultra reverse. Frank, I might have selected a thinner wood for this piece but the thin material I have is very brittle and I didn't think it would hold up without chipping. Also, I liked the way the grain showed as well as the knot in the area of the little house at the bottom.

    Finally back on the saw

If you own a vertical belt bench sander you can make your circles just about as perfect as possible. The cut panel should be affixed to the backer either permanently, or with double stick tape, before cutting the disk. I cut out the disk making sure I cut on the OUTSIDE of the line. Slow and carefully but not worrying if the cut is real smooth. the cut line needs to remain visable all the way arount the disk. Then, using the table on the vertical belt sander to get a true vertial edge, you can carefully and gently sand away the waste until the line is just removed evenly all around. Actually this is easier than it sounds, However, the trick is to keep the disk moving/rotating while the sander takes the material off slowly.

  39. In my introduction post I mentioned I usually cut animal projects. I did complete a lighthouse project recently. The pattern is from Steve Good and I tried to be a little artistic with the painting on the backer board. I'm in NC and we have 7 coastal lighthouses. I started to try and copy one of the patterns on the state's lighthouses but decided I liked the grain of the wood better.

Hi, I'm Ben Me too! "The photo should be taken in front of an uncluttered, clean, plain backdrop." Good luck with that in my shop. Most of the time I just shove things to the side when I take a picture.

  43. We no longer have a beach on Pellow's Island. But we do have plenty of places to swim. Here is a photo of two of our grandchildren and I (taken about 10 years ago) at a dock near the front of the island. I've made a lot of scroll-sawn art that would be appropriate here, but will chose just one piece: This plaque measures 35 centimetres by 42 centimetres. The background and frame are made from Cherry and walnut. The foreground pieces have been made from figured maple. The basic design is by Sheila Landry. I modified the design in order to have the island a cabin simulate our cabin on Pellow's Island in Lake Pivabiska. Many many loons make Lake Pivabiska their home in the spring and summer.

  46. A couple of mine. Saw the waves in an article about Fiona Kingdon in SSWW magazine, always wanted to cut one of hers, and it looked like a challenge. Hint....it was. Viking ship was an H.Botas pattern, as was the pirate owl (cuz, c'mon, who DOESN'T need a cutting of a pirate owl?!?), picked those up from his Etsy shop. Nautilus gears were from Steve Good, working gears are always fun to cut.

  47. I did this beach scene back in Feb of 2019 and is posted on the site. The design is based on a paint by numbers my wife did and also a puzzle. My wife converted the picture in Photoshop to greyscale. The design took quite a while because I wanted to get the beach and light house right. We gifted the paint by numbers and puzzle to good friends that live by the beach.
