    Leftover

I had some leftover epoxy from making a charcuterie board, so after receiving the latest scrollsaw magazine I decided to try the leaves. Pieces of scrap walnut and cherry and here is my result.

  3. My first Serious Fretwork challenge. I had only been scrolling for a couple of years and it was my first ribbon presented to me by Wes Demarest who was an editor for Creative woodworking and crafts magazine back then. 2006 It was a Jeff Zaffino design. It was also my first homemade frame and attempt at matt cutting. the frame is Cherry. Baltic birch stack cut 3 up.

  4. This takes me back about 8 years when I was trying to think what I was going to give to my wife for Valentines day. I was looking through some patterns and found this one a on a CD I had purchased and decided that that my wife might enjoy having this one for her decors. I hit the target with it, as she loved it and has it now in a prominent place in our home to this day. I also had a request for one of these from my grandson, for their wedding gift. They did not need anything for their wedding, in the way of gifts, except to maybe one of grampa's tower clocks. So this clock with always have a special place in my heart. Dick heppnerguy

  7. My Black Panther cut, that I just completed and posted in Bragging Rights, was actually cut because it was trully based on a nostalgia memory/reason. Back in the fifties my High School Teams were called the Panthers and this particular pattern is almost identical to the Black Panther Images use on the team jerseys and jackets. None of my other work fits the challenge criteria.

  8. Canoes on Lake Pivabiska: Some of my happiest times have been spent in a canoe. The photos are me canoeing with my Granddaughter Isla and my Grandson Ethan; both photos taken 17 years ago. I designed the frame, the layout and the matting. Timothy (worbler) designed the pattern for the scroll saw portion in the middle and I made a few modifications to his design. This is in the predominant place for art in our home, that is over the mantle-place in our living room.

  10. Summers spent camping and hiking with friends, way back in the day. Dad was in the Air Force, stationed down in South Georgia (fart, and they smelled it in Florida kinda South). We'd get away to go camping as often as we could, and once we had access to cars, we started driving up to the Appalachians to camp. Mountains will always hold a place in my heart. We lost track of each other after highschool, I went and joined the Navy and had a stroke or something that caused me to volunteer for submarines. Qualified on three of them before getting out in 1998. My Dad, who passed in 2009, was a big fan of Texas history, and grew up on Westerns. He knew every John Wayne and Clint Eastwood western by heart. First time I saw "Outlaw Josey Wales" was sitting on the sofa, watching it with him. Still love that movie.

  11. The Panther really pops. ! When doing fretwork like that magnificent clock grain direction is not very helpful because of the design. If you strengthen one direction you will have just as many weak areas in the other direction. Cherry is such a beautiful wood. If you have the capability to glue up Veneers. you could make your own cherry plywood.

  12. I got it done. I think my problem was I though my cutting skills were not good enough for the great pattern I got from TD. Then I got it in my thick head to go slow and follow the lines. this is what I got. Thank You TD for the great Pattern.

    Couple Of Cuts

Sorry I've not been on the forum of late, but I'm afraid as with all of us life gets in the way at times, these are a couple of cuts I've managed in the last couple of months, I've tried to make them posher by putting them in box frames (shop bought sorry), the small one is for our kitchen and the larger one was for the Daughter-In-Law who has a small cupcake business that started off as a hobby, they are both cut from 10mm Maple, I brought that after advise on the forum about "white" woods for inlay, I like cutting it so much I'm using it for other things as well

  20. Last week, I headed back to Montana to visit my family. It has been awhile since I've been home. We had a great time reminiscing about the good ol' days. So I think this month's scroll saw challenge is about nostalgia. Post a project that brings back memories of the good ol' days. This is pretty open to interpretation. Old cars, trains, farm houses, scenic, etc. When you post, let us know what kind of memories it brings back for you. It will be fun to see what people come up with.

  22. I wanted a quick project to try out my Hegner so I whipped this out. From a Steve Good pattern. I asked him to include a palm tree for me to fit our "beach" decor. Sadly, the brand of tissue that Barb uses is an oddball size box. Who knew? Puffs is about 1/8" bigger in one direction. I'm still lacking in knowledge of staining. I wanted it darker. Oh well...maybe next time it will fit and be the right color.

  24. The family tree is roughly 20x12 inches. It's made from 1/4" cherry, with 5mm ply backer. It uses the same ply painted black for the strips that hold it all together. Sheila Landry design. The dragon is 9x5.5 inches, from 1/4" curly maple, with a 5mm ply backer. Both were cut with Olson #2/0R blades.

  25. Hey Gang, Need some input/options please. Using rattle can spray lacquer finish on items. Most times, works great, but lately the cans are clogging up constantly and driving me insane. Could be that the garage is getting to hot and affecting the contents. Don't know, but I need ideas as to other ways to finish these pieces please. They have hooks installed and are to be hung on a wall, indoors (usually). Any options need to be SIMPLE and quick... I know, I'm being picky, but I don't have the time to spend more than a few minutes per piece. Thanks for any suggestions you may have. (Photo with cans are larger versions I've started making. Collage shows normal size "key/leash racks".

  28. Thats why I didn’t buy one when I went to check out advanced machinery on my visit there. Parts were insane and even a new bellows is more plastic than rubber. You could always wait on a bellows. My old black and decker when I was seven didn't have anything lol For paint Kubota Orange in a can should match depending on the age. If its older and the hose is mounted on the upper arm then its just gonna blow it all in your face. Unless you create your own locline assembly. Ps wood carries affordable loc line hoses. So does bushton. Just remember some of those older hegners are not engineered for running with some stuff like the comfort knob etc. If you ever do get your bellows just turn the hose upward so it gives you cool air on a hot day lol let me know down the road how you like your hegner.

    My Weekend Project

I finally got my hands on some quality 1/4 inch BB and wanted to try stack cutting. This is a Steve Good pattern and was cut with #3 MGT. I finished them with natural and red pine Minwax followed by 4 coats of clear gloss with light 300 grit sanding between coats. I wanted to keep the thickness to a minimum so the backer board is actually heavy card stock that has been lightly painted (which seem to work fine). Hope you enjoy.

    Last Supper

The plans came from Scroller Unlimited. ( I hope I got their name right). I just finished a 3d picture of the Last Supper, the table and figures are cut from 1/8" birch plywood and stained with diluted craft paints. I copied the back ground from the famous painting of the Last Supper. I used Pegas 2/0 reverse tooth blades to cut it.

    Toroid

Steve Good pattern, I believe. Not a difficult cut, just time consuming...and we've got one of our daughter's friends staying with us for the week, so instead of one moody 12-year-old, now there's two giggly 12-year-olds with no volume control. LOL Pattern called for 1/4" bbply, I used a piece of 1x8 I had left over from building the tortoise enclosure. Used 2 Pegas MG #3 blades, stained Minwax Honey.

    Lichtenstein Castle

Time for a landscape scroll project. My sister reminded me that back in ’68 that the family visited Lichtenstein castle for my parent’s 25th anniversary. It’s located south of Stuttgart and is still privately owned. It has some elements that are similar to Neuschwanstein castle in Bavaria and would make an interesting project. My wife and I had just finished a 1K piece puzzle of this castle. The puzzle was square and included lots of vegetation and didn’t add to the design so I decided to try something I hadn’t done before. I wanted to do an oval picture and frame. I've made an ellipsograph and looped string method but MS 3D paint has an option to use a 2D circle tool on the pattern that can be stretched to make an ellipse. That was the easy part. I found a very good video on Youtube to make an oval frame. It involved using lots of tools in the shop. I used a 6’ ¾” x 6” piece of poplar and cut into 4 segments and mitered at 45 degrees. I needed to make a template on the scroll saw (#7 blade ) I also used my router to make assorted detail edge cuts. The attached video was very helpful. The plaque was 1/8 BBPW with ¼” black acrylic paint. Finish was semi-gloss lacquer. https://www.castlesworld.com/castles/lichtenstein-castle.php https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6WkzRH-Up8&t=31s

    Cute Snoot

Thanks first go to Granpa for making the pattern for me.. But here is the finished thing. Was a quick cut. Just used a store bought frame, because I didn't feel like breaking out the router and stuff to make a frame today. Pic of the finished project, and of little Kevin who it's for.. He's only 16 grams, but look at that cute nose. He's an Axanthic Western Hognose snake.
