    Commission work

Had a special request to cut the “Penny drop box” from Steve Good with the inscription “Brew Crew”. Since it is done with 1/4” BB apply I decided to stacked cut two and just added the Brew Crew on one box, spare one for inventory.

Thank you Grandpa and TDpainter for working on the pattern of my dad. I used both to modify it a little. The patterns you did for me are awesome. This is the finished cut and I made the frame out of cherry. My brothers and sisters really liked it and I made one for my sister Theresa. He and mom were incredible people. Thanks again.

  7. My first Serious Fretwork challenge. I had only been scrolling for a couple of years and it was my first ribbon presented to me by Wes Demarest who was an editor for Creative woodworking and crafts magazine back then. 2006 It was a Jeff Zaffino design. It was also my first homemade frame and attempt at matt cutting. the frame is Cherry. Baltic birch stack cut 3 up.

  8. The following projects were completed in between my Physical Therapy exercises for my knee after surgery, regular 20 minute ice pack applications to keep the swelling down and a number of other doctor appointments to check out a few other maladies that need to be attended to. Ability to walk and stand for any length of time was severely hampered. Finally getting almost being back to normal. Shop time is improving. So please enjoy and critique as always. The Joker – Like it or hate it! I’m positing this project although I don’t really like the final product. The cut is not bad, but my paint work leaves a lot to be desired. Also, after the project was completed, I didn’t find the subject very interesting or the most pleasant to view. Sometimes I think it is a good idea to post something I’m not happy just to get other’s perspectives. This pattern is another I converted from a free stencil pattern I found on-line. The cut panel is 5/32” thk solid core Maple Ply x11” x14” mounted to a ¼” thk BB Ply backer painted black. All cutting was done with Pegas #2/0 spiral blades. The cut panel was hand painted with Acrylic artist paints. The assembled panel was finished with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Lacquer. Like always, the simple 1 ¾” wide frame is Poplar stained with Minwax Early American and finished with gloss Wipe-On Poly. Buddleia Butterfly Bush - H Donavan I found this beautiful and elegant H Donavan stencil pattern on-line and converted it into a scroll saw pattern. I sized the pattern to fit on a 5/32” thk Maple sold core x 9” x 17” panel that was affixed to a hand painted ¼” thick x 11” x 19” Mahogany Backer. The site where I found the stencil, showed many colored images which I followed somewhat while painting the backer. Once again, I cut this pattern with Pegas #2/0 spiral blades which was perfect for cutting the many very small/thin cut out areas. Again, the simple 1 ¾” wide frame is Poplar stained with Minwax Mission Oak Poly/stain. After taking the picture and looking at the frame under the lights, I see a lot of runs and blemishes I had not noticed. So I’m going to sand and refinish it in the coming days. Flying Eagle – Just for me I have had this Steeve Goode pattern on my to-do list for some time. A number of other member’s hereon, have posted their version and they were all exquisite. I decided to make one for ME and sit it on my desk right next to my “GRUMPY OLD MAN” sign. I used a piece of ¾” Red Oak I purchased in Lowes. As per Steve’s suggestion I made the base ¾” thick, and planed the ¾” down to ½” for the Eagle. Since I was cutting thicker and harder material, I chose to use Pegas #3 MGT R blades for Eagle and #5 MGT R to cut the oval base. Since I have been using mostly spirals of late, it took me a little bit of time to get used to the straight blades again. I refined the oval on the benchtop belt sander and use a ¼” round over bit in my router table to ease the top edge of the base. My version is slightly larger than the original having a wing span of 12". I left the wood natural and just applied multiple coats of clear gloss Lacquer as a finish.

  9. I got an email this morning on one of my news watches and this is what I got (I have not verified this as of yet, but will this weekend): Can anyone else confirm their area lumber pricing has dropped? Thanks as always in advance

  13. I bought 25 2X4 studs today at Home Depot for about $3.50 ea. About two months ago I priced them at almost $8ea. Plywood is still a bit high, but coming down as well. This is in Central Florida.

  14. I agree with @Bill WIlson. The prices here have dropped significantly. Which is quite the relief.

  15. I haven't been following it closely, but I just checked prices on Lowes website. A standard pre-cut 2x4 stud is $3.48. A 2x4x10' is $7.88 and a 2x4x16' is $10.52. A 4x8 sheet of 7/16" OSB is $13.85. I think these prices are considerably lower than they were a few months ago, but I wasn't really tracking the prices, so I don't know how they compare to 2020 or 2019 prices.

  19. The prices of framing materials in West Michigan has dropped dramatically in the last couple months. I guess I had better clarify. What I meant was home or structure framing materials.

  20. Most wood suppliers charge a premium for wood 10+ wide. Why because there is such a demand for lumber that trees are harvested before they get large enough to provide wide boards.

  22. The Joker may not be everyone's cup of tea but you have made it quite life like according to what he looked like in the movie, so well done. It was Heath Ledgers final movie. The Butterfly Bush is very beautiful, you did a great job. The Eagle looks great, once again you did a great job. Your painting skills and color choices are brilliant. Marg

  27. Well Scott you are going to have to shop around to see if there is a local supplier around somewhere. Lucky I have one 60 miles away. I can get a 12in x 12ft x 1in poplar board planed down to 3/4in for 43.00. I do have to do a bit of sanding though. The other route is like everything else these days ( raise your prices ). Not really what I like to do but you have to survive. Hope you find you a better supplier soon.

  31. Are you still buying lumber from Lowes and Home Depot? You will save in price and increased quality by going to a local hardwood source. A local sawyer or a hardwood lumber yard will give you much better quality wood, probably at a much better price too. I think we had this conversation before. Charley

  32. Remembering my first day in Basic Training with the promise to get my first clothing issue the following day. And then the Sergeant saying, let's see how many of you will walk the walk, so you can have the right to talk the talk. I made this pattern for all of those who have earned that right.

  33. This is project number 1. I went to a course at the Durham Woodworking Club put on by Don Gaudet and we cut this Wolf. I had an old Craftsman single speed with pin blades. Never knew about patterns being available, pin less blades, threading the blade, or why the table tilted. We where using DW788 that did not vibrate like crazy. That was on Saturday. I researched machines and ordered a EX-21 on Tuesday - delivered Friday and as they say the rest is history. Best $4 I ever spent.

  34. FYI, you can buy the solid core Cherry plywood through HD. However, for such a beautiful project as that clock, solid wood is IMO the only way to go.

  35. Summers spent camping and hiking with friends, way back in the day. Dad was in the Air Force, stationed down in South Georgia (fart, and they smelled it in Florida kinda South). We'd get away to go camping as often as we could, and once we had access to cars, we started driving up to the Appalachians to camp. Mountains will always hold a place in my heart. We lost track of each other after highschool, I went and joined the Navy and had a stroke or something that caused me to volunteer for submarines. Qualified on three of them before getting out in 1998. My Dad, who passed in 2009, was a big fan of Texas history, and grew up on Westerns. He knew every John Wayne and Clint Eastwood western by heart. First time I saw "Outlaw Josey Wales" was sitting on the sofa, watching it with him. Still love that movie.

  36. My Black Panther cut, that I just completed and posted in Bragging Rights, was actually cut because it was trully based on a nostalgia memory/reason. Back in the fifties my High School Teams were called the Panthers and this particular pattern is almost identical to the Black Panther Images use on the team jerseys and jackets. None of my other work fits the challenge criteria.

  37. One thing, I am not good a paying attention of grain direction and on fragile pieces that is important. That could have been the problem, I don't know, but cherry if fragile in thin pieces...

  38. I'm starting the Rhinelander clock from The Art Factory. I've ordered Cherry and Walnut. The Cherry is for the 1/8" parts. I guess I had better go with something else.

  39. Canoes on Lake Pivabiska: Some of my happiest times have been spent in a canoe. The photos are me canoeing with my Granddaughter Isla and my Grandson Ethan; both photos taken 17 years ago. I designed the frame, the layout and the matting. Timothy (worbler) designed the pattern for the scroll saw portion in the middle and I made a few modifications to his design. This is in the predominant place for art in our home, that is over the mantle-place in our living room.

  40. This takes me back about 8 years when I was trying to think what I was going to give to my wife for Valentines day. I was looking through some patterns and found this one a on a CD I had purchased and decided that that my wife might enjoy having this one for her decors. I hit the target with it, as she loved it and has it now in a prominent place in our home to this day. I also had a request for one of these from my grandson, for their wedding gift. They did not need anything for their wedding, in the way of gifts, except to maybe one of grampa's tower clocks. So this clock with always have a special place in my heart. Dick heppnerguy

  41. When all the grandkids would get together back in the day, this is where we would hang out. This is a Charles Dearing pattern but looks so much like the barn at my grandparents farm. It was the most fun right after the hay was cut.
