    Friends are family

I know I've been slacking this week.. LOL So here is the latest one. It's 1/4" cherry, and is about 9x10 ish.. Cut with Olson #2/0R blades. It has a ply backer. I was trying to see what color backer I wanted, and I hit a scrap piece with 4 colors.. Showing it to the GF we decided it would be kinda cool to use all 4, so I did the same pattern on the backer as the test.. I think it looks kinda cool. Oh, and it's a Sheila Landry Design pattern.. DUH!! LOL

A lovely pattern by Jim Blume. I couldn't resist cutting it. Straight off the saw so no finish or frame yet. Done on an A4 sheet of 3mm b/b and #2 Niqua blades.

    Another Repeat

This is another repeat cut for me as it was commissioned. Another Steve Good pattern cut from a 1 X 12 pine finished with natural stain and multiple coats of clear gloss lightly sanded between each coat. The back is 1/4 ply painted black. I used a Pegas #2/0 spiral and #3 MFG. This was really my first experience with the spiral blade. It took some getting use to but eventually got the hang of it. I did notice cutting pine the blade would pause and then advance quickly then pause again as it traveled through the grain in the board. I also noticed you would have to be careful not to let the blade drift with the grain rather than following the line. Anyway, this catches me up on my commissions. Next weekend I'm cutting something I've been wanting to cut.

  5. I posted these two projects previously but they were a smaller version. I was commissioned to do these in a larger size. Both are Steve Good patterns and were cut from 1 X 12 pine with 1/4 backing. They were both stained with natural Minwax and 3 coats of clear gloss.

  8. Indeed, it is so sad to hear, when it could have been prevented so easily. I know most people don't think as I do but when it is possible to do things to protect ourselves and we don't do them is way beyond my understanding as to why? I know the family is devastated and my heart goes out to them during this difficult time. Just my $.02

  10. I started this project almost 2 months ago but had to set it aside after a few issues required me to remodel my bathroom and then I had to complete 2 commission projects. This is a Steve Good pattern and is cut with 1/4 Birch using Pegas 2/0 MFG. The back is 1/4 ply. The front is finished with natural stain while the back is finished with dark walnut. It then received several coats of clear gloss. The fine cuts were a little tricky and I had to keep reminding myself to let the blades do the work and not push it.

    Blade Storage

I came up with something different the other day after looking on Facebook. It showed tooth brush holders being used for something other than tooth brushes, which started me thinking. I know dangerous, right? Anyway I have 4 blade types that I use a lot and the are stored in round containers sitting flat an a trolley next to my saw, so when I need a blade they have usually rolled around and I have to check most of them to get the right one. So I brought just one holder to see if it worked and it does, very nicely. Here are a couple of photos. I know it may not be ideal for everyone but someone may find it useful. Oh plus you can increase the size of the hole at the top if you wish to hang them on a hook. Marg

  12. I messaged his daughter to tell her and all of Les's family how sad we all are and to let them know how he effected each of our lives. And that he was loved by many here at The Village. She is very greatful and says thanks very much.

  13. Ray, thank you for the update. Like so many, my heart is saddened at the loss of our friend Les. I was greatly concerned this might be the outcome when you all said he was being put on a vent unfortunately. My heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to his wife Faye and their daughters and their family. He was a regular contributor here in the Village whose wit and wisdom will be greatly missed by me and I know many of us here. I pray that his family can find peace and comfort in this trying time and I am glad to hear that Faye is doing better and hope she continues to heal. Ray, I am glad to hear that you have gotten your vaccine.

  15. I Designed "God loves you"pattern again. last time I made it without "s" I make a lot of English mistakes I think omitting the "s" was a big mistake. I really wanted to make it with "S" I also Keep the meaning God's G and You's Y to be together It was tricky with three "O" I made two patterns and made one today

  20. This my second cutting of this pattern... It is my favorite "Eagle" pattern. I cut it before in a piece of Black Walnut. This time it is cut in a piece of Monkey Pot I purchased from Ocooch Hardwood. It is 16" x 12.5" x .5". It is pretty wood,,, a little softer than walnut... I gave my first cutting to my best friend sometime ago and have wanted to do it again ever since. I plan on framing this one when I can find some lumber I can afford... This is a pattern is out of the SSWC magazine, in all their wisdom didn't even put it in the foldout patterns section, they put it over two pages in the mag so it is even more difficult to make a decent copy of... But well worth the effort. It is made from a painting by Carol Cavlaris, called "Spirit of the Wind. Like I say,, my favorite eagle pattern..I would love to have on the same format wit the American Bald Eagle... If I ever find the right piece of some burl wood,,, I will cut it again.

    Rottweiler.

Very clean cuts. Even though it isn't finished the black makes the Rottie pop. And if anyone broke into my home with my dogs standing guard, they would drown. They would get slobbered to death. No, they are not bull dogs or St. Bernards, they are a long haired Chihuahua and Papillon. (The fear!!! Being licked to death!)

    Rottweiler.

Great job. I like dogs but having worked as a service mechanic for Alabama's natural gas utility I had a few try to have me for a snack. A Rottweiler and a German Shepherd are on the list. I know they're not all the same but it still comes to mind. Very nice cutting and great pattern!

Very nice, WolfmoonCT. The green was what stood out for me in the small picture. After clicking the thumb nail the larger picture really allows the colors to stand out. I bet it is awesome in person. Great job!

  48. The following projects were completed in between my Physical Therapy exercises for my knee after surgery, regular 20 minute ice pack applications to keep the swelling down and a number of other doctor appointments to check out a few other maladies that need to be attended to. Ability to walk and stand for any length of time was severely hampered. Finally getting almost being back to normal. Shop time is improving. So please enjoy and critique as always. The Joker – Like it or hate it! I’m positing this project although I don’t really like the final product. The cut is not bad, but my paint work leaves a lot to be desired. Also, after the project was completed, I didn’t find the subject very interesting or the most pleasant to view. Sometimes I think it is a good idea to post something I’m not happy just to get other’s perspectives. This pattern is another I converted from a free stencil pattern I found on-line. The cut panel is 5/32” thk solid core Maple Ply x11” x14” mounted to a ¼” thk BB Ply backer painted black. All cutting was done with Pegas #2/0 spiral blades. The cut panel was hand painted with Acrylic artist paints. The assembled panel was finished with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Lacquer. Like always, the simple 1 ¾” wide frame is Poplar stained with Minwax Early American and finished with gloss Wipe-On Poly. Buddleia Butterfly Bush - H Donavan I found this beautiful and elegant H Donavan stencil pattern on-line and converted it into a scroll saw pattern. I sized the pattern to fit on a 5/32” thk Maple sold core x 9” x 17” panel that was affixed to a hand painted ¼” thick x 11” x 19” Mahogany Backer. The site where I found the stencil, showed many colored images which I followed somewhat while painting the backer. Once again, I cut this pattern with Pegas #2/0 spiral blades which was perfect for cutting the many very small/thin cut out areas. Again, the simple 1 ¾” wide frame is Poplar stained with Minwax Mission Oak Poly/stain. After taking the picture and looking at the frame under the lights, I see a lot of runs and blemishes I had not noticed. So I’m going to sand and refinish it in the coming days. Flying Eagle – Just for me I have had this Steeve Goode pattern on my to-do list for some time. A number of other member’s hereon, have posted their version and they were all exquisite. I decided to make one for ME and sit it on my desk right next to my “GRUMPY OLD MAN” sign. I used a piece of ¾” Red Oak I purchased in Lowes. As per Steve’s suggestion I made the base ¾” thick, and planed the ¾” down to ½” for the Eagle. Since I was cutting thicker and harder material, I chose to use Pegas #3 MGT R blades for Eagle and #5 MGT R to cut the oval base. Since I have been using mostly spirals of late, it took me a little bit of time to get used to the straight blades again. I refined the oval on the benchtop belt sander and use a ¼” round over bit in my router table to ease the top edge of the base. My version is slightly larger than the original having a wing span of 12". I left the wood natural and just applied multiple coats of clear gloss Lacquer as a finish.
